Top up taxation
The idea is simple. We have a current level of service that we pay for as a country through taxation.
When the next celebrity gets a bee in their bonnet about cause x or y.
Rather than petitioning the government to raise taxes on your average tax payer whilst the celeb free rides by paying accountants to avoid as much tax as possible.
The government could simply direct the said do gooder to the top up tax system. The celeb can start an online petition asking people to top up their tax code to pay for their whim of the moment.
Obviously the celeb will need to publish their own philanthropic gesture to get the ball rolling and give others an idea of what to contribute as a percentage of their wages. Once the required amount is reached the service can be activated.
People could support as many additional services as they wish by topping up as requests are made.

"Or just ignore celebrities and their "look at me" charity work ?"
Yes but the current process means people just have to sign an online petition whilst committing little more that lip service to any cause.
I don't mind people backing good causes but I would be more convinced if they put up their own cash first rather than just adding a signature and hoping someone else pays. |
