I'm no expert but I would have thought there would be way better platforms dedicated to providing the kind of support and advice needed to cope with such a devastating condition...
I wish you well.. |

It goes with my PTSD, the hardest part is realising you have a problem, the next is admitting you have a problem and then hardest of all is asking for help.
Unless you can do all 3, there will be little chance of reducing it's impact on yourself! |

I ha e suffered with depression my entire life been on and off meds and have found different ways of coping some with help some without
There are a lot of factors to it
The first being you need to not listen to any or all negativity..especially people telling you where to get your help from...help can come from a perfect stranger to a professional...
And secondly realising you are a suffering is believe it or not a great thing because you realise you need help and that you cannot do it on your own...
Sometimes the simple thing can help, like watching a film that takes you back to a happy childhood memory, music that sets your mind free even if only for the 2 1/2 mins it is playing...
Do you suffer from SADS it could be you need a SADS light to pic up your spirits |

Yep, the black dog descends every so often, the trick for me is knowing the signs before it fully hits, because if I let it in it can take a lot of work to lift it again.
I've tried medication, but it just made me feel....nothing.
So I try to keep myself even, I don't drink regularly because that starts it off, and I don't smoke because that just kicks my ass mentally.
Only people who have been close to depression understand quite how dark things can get, and that just because someone doesn't walk round with a sad face all day, that they are depressed, case in point, Robbin Williams.
And I hate to disagree with soxy, but ANY forum, is a forum for mental health issues, not many people when they are trying to cope with depression, go searching for depression forums, they are depressing, sometimes when I'm feeling depressed I just want a bit of tome off from it, and to see enlightened funny posts from a bloke in a frock |

That's how I feel. I go from extreme happy to down in the dumps! In a matter of hour. Hearing one negative thing can spark it.
The problem is I find it difficult to play the happy guy but I do it non the less.
I find it very difficult to bond with people. I had anti depression drugs, but they make me feel awful.
But just hearing from u all, I'm Not alone make me feel normal again.
I'm going to start regular exercise to see if that helps!!! |

Only you will know what works for you, you will get a lot of advice on how to deal with it, from yoga, to "just cheer up" and from medication to "come on lets just get pissed" its a bit trial and error, but you Are not alone |

Meds aren't the be all and end all..... use them by all means to help you get yourself up from the floor but ultimately.... it's down to you to progress from that point.
Meds will get you to a certain level but they will keep you at that same level all the while you're taking them |

Agree hence why people should be careful about saying things like above. People could read that and think they want nothing to do with medication without realising that's an individual response not a global response. |

Suffer on and off. Was on 40mg of Citalopram at one point, that didn't help really they just made me less agitated, but coming off them was quite heavy going so i try to muddle on now without medication. I don't recommend that for anyone else though, before i get told off.
My ex suffers quite badly with it too and has dark moods. He has attempted to take his own life twice, whereas i'm just generally covered in a mist of sadness and i find it extremely hard to find joy in anything. I'm good at putting on an act for my children. Suicide has never crossed my mind as i just couldn't do that to my kids and i know my ex would be unable to manage them due to his depression which is more debilatating than mine.
My concentration levels are also shite, for example i used to love reading and would finish books in days. Now if i can make it through a paragraph i'm doing well.
I can still write long arsed forum posts though!

I have had my walks with a black dog... He is currently asleep in front of the fire.. So to speak.
I used exercise and routine along with counselling, volunteering, medication and love & help from my family and friends. You will eventually find you can see the signs and symptoms.. You then deal/cope as much as you can... Above all do not be afraid to talk about it... Be it to professionals or Total strangers.. Hiding is when it wins. I was given a book many years ago... I have passed it on tenfold... Well worth reading..
I Had a Black Dog by Matthew Johnstone (ISBN: 9781845295899)
Stay strong sir! |

Had it about two years since I broke up from a girl I loved more than anyone I ever have. It was the most intense relationship I've ever had and she was battling depression and decided she didn't want to be with me anymore and wanted to fuck a guy she worked with. Since then I can't totally shake it but have good and bad days. |

What many people don't realise is that depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain & yes medication does help ...when you find the right medication....but natural remedies are also good as is yoga & meditation...
It's nothing to be ashamed of & seeking help is a massive step x |

A couple of websites that I recommend to my patients are moodgym and moodjuice
Both are cognitive behavioural therapy based self help packages / guides, which have a lot of evidence for helping with episodes of depression. If people prefer books, then I can higher recommend Mind Over Mood by Greenberger and Padesky.
most areas also have services known as IAPT (improving access to psychological therapies). If needed, google it for your local area. They often offer therapy quickly and accept self referrals.
Hope that helps anyone who needs it, and positive wishes to you all |

No one is worth living the rest of your life in a state of depression. Get some help, don't live your life stuck in the past, move on and enjoy the positive things you have in life. |

I know and I am getting help. I'm mainly finding it hard because I still speak to her a lot and I know how sick she is and she comes asking for support on her bad days. I know I need to block her from my life and move on but I also know there are days she needs support and it knocks me back. Sometimes you just want to say fuck off and get support off the guy you fucked but I know she's not well so just stay plesant to her. |

Been living with the black dog for around 18 years now.at one point was on 40mg citalopram and that seemed to put me on ground zero but I just felt nothing.these days I just deal with every day as it comes without medication and tell myself I'm doing better.
Each person deals with this differently and it affects each person differently so there is no set rules on anything.
I know it might sound abit harsh but I always think that someone out there has it worse than me&they are managing to get through each day,so I just get up put on a smile and live each day one at a time. |

I've suffered from depression for the last five years. I fight it most days. Have avoided medication however I found the counselling really helped. Teaching me how to handle most situations. This helps me most of the times. Yesterday was a bad morning for me, just felt so low and wanted to cry and I have no idea why I was so upset. My work colleagues were absolutely brilliant and helped me through it. It helps to talk and not bottle it up. |

that's the dose i was on, but it made me feel nothing and dry mouth, so i stopped.
I guess my main trigger was when granddad passed away. Its him who comes into my mind when im down regardless of what's brought me down. i always have this feeling if granddad was here id be okay....
the struggle continues. I do want to say to you all, that the fact you have spoken about it with me on this forum has provided me with a sense of hope.
I came here to explore the sex and physical side of thing, but what i have found is some real people with real stores, so i thank you all. i read a quote i wanted to share with you all

Yep. I suffered it for 5 years.
Bloody awful
Have you tried counselling?
I was skeptical about it, but it really can help.
It can help you identify the triggers and causes of your depression which could help to you finding a way through it.

Many people feel depressed and don't know or understand why they do, I came across a friend a while ago and studied their behavior and how they respond to certain ways and situations, they thought they were just depressed all of their life until they were diagnosed with ASD Aspergers Syndrome Disorder after I mentioned it to them, something your born with and no medication can help, all you can do is learn how to cope with it. There are different levels from low to high. |

There are so many really great posts on this topic, and I'm so glad to see that mental health stigma is lessening so we can all talk openly about it. I have experienced depression and anxiety on and off for a decade. Everything is pretty well managed these days apart from occasional bouts of social anxiety, and it is no coincidence that I'm able to be open about it with people in all aspects of my life. It's really great to be at a point in my life where I can really help other people who are going through tough times.
Quick reminder that anyone can call the Samaritans for confidential anonymous emotional support. Freephone 116 123. |

Depression is a bastard, and I know for a fact how hard to fight it can be. Personally, I find walking helps, spending time with animals (just feeding birds is good), reading motivational quotes, and I don't mean that sort of crap you see on facebook, read some REAL quotes from REAL people who fought their battles in life and won, learn from them.
Sing and dance if you can, both are powerful tools against depression. |

Really recommend volunteering when you feel ready, it completely changed the way I view things, for the better.
And yes reiterating to the person asking about support for partners of sufferers - the Samaritans are there for you. Ask the council about your local carers' support team. Even if you don't feel like a carer, you're probably doing a lot of things that qualify under that label. Also make sure you look after your own emotional wellbeing - you can't help others whilst neglecting yourself. |
