Depends on supply company for tariffs... Smart meters give you information (such as how much electricity you're using / used) as the user and download that same information to the company, that seems an awful lot of money to be spending weekly, in the house I rent out they have smart meters and they're pre payment I've had workers in their using heaters etc and that used about 15.00 in four days. |

our new flat has one of these, costs us more than we paid before....but nowhere near that amount...was it there when she moved in?...we have discovered we can get it changed as soon as an engineer is available...that sounds extortionate...we are pretty careful but have plenty of hot water, necessary heating etc...she can check on comparison sites, they can do quotes specific to the property |

Blimey that's a lot ... I pay £15 a week for electricity and £10 for gas.. and that's with Scottish power..
Maybe she is on the wrong tariff? |

"Was gonna say;
Isn't it just a tax on being poor?"
yes, they are..i think theyre a disgrace..getting ours changed asap, but we're lucky , we werent in arrears before so we can...though,also i find the amount of electricity some people think its normal to use beggars belief! really don't need to live in 28 degree heat all the time! |

I have smart meters and I dont use that Mutch electric but a electric water heater like a big kettle and if you use it a lot you can use a hell if a lot electric useing it I was told you can use upto £30 a week on it |

A while back they used to 'load; the meters, so if a previous tennant had run up a huge bill and couldnt pay it, the company would put a credit meter in and when they topped it up half would go on fuel, and the other half on paying off the debt.
I know credit tarrifs are higher, but that doesnt sound right at all OP. |

"She's probably paying previous tenants debt
im wondering that too in that case i think its paid up already!!!! she only moved in there 24th october "
Your daughter needs to get in touch with her provider pronto, and get someone to look, threaten them with Energywatch if they try dragging their heels. . If there is a mistake, she should have payments reimbursed and backdated . If she's unhappy with the the outcome, she can contact Energywatch, where they will do an investigation. Something really doesn't add up there. Your daughter should not be paying that amount. |

a 30 amp (eg standard domenstic) supply maxed out is 30 x 220 = 6.6 Kw and if you call 1 Kwh 15p then in 24 hours you get 6.6 x 24 x 15 = £23.76 per day. Do that 7 days a week and you get £166.32 per week.
That's running six one bar electric fires 24/7 and pretty much maxing out a 30 amp supply.
Sure you also have 60 amp etc supplies, but they are for peak loads, oven + kettle + electric shower + electric heaters + hairdryer and the main switch doesn't trip.
She must be burning 4kw constantly 24/7 to rack up that kind of money, or someone else is feeding off her supply, or something is seriously wrong with meter or billing. |

Is 15p roughly what a prepay user would pay? I pay in arrears via dd, so I've no clue but know prepay customers have borne the highest cocts of all customer types. |

The house I rent has prepayment , the tariff is 15.2p per kw..
Generally the prepayment tariffs are higher than other meters also the standing charge is higher for the meter as well. The prepayment meters costs more to those who often can least afford it. |

I'm on a pre pay
2 bed very old house, draughty and not energy efficient at all. Even with the heating on downstairs is always cold. I can easily do £8-10 a day gas wise. That's having the thermostat set to 18° ....downstairs never hits it so the bloody thing doesn't shut off.
If I could have it taken out it would be gone yesterday!

I was glad to get away from E-on in the end price hikes and customer service was the last nail in their coffin for me and since then the daily papers giveing the run down on the big six ripping customers off, I,m fairly pleased with whom I,m with recently thou they have been going on about haveing a smart meter put in I,m not encouraged in anyway or form to have one of these put in and reading this post does not give you any Incentive to want one either, there are people in your area now phone now to book you smart meter in on top of this they say by 2020 it will be law to have one (so no pressure there then ) without doubt the winter months can be more expensive be it gas or electric but we need all these things daily at present I just wish folk would leave things alone Instead of Interfering all the time.... The smart meter being the newest pain in the arse. |

Is it a multi occupancy building?or mid terrace? Is she paying all her neighbours leccy? I go daft if our average usage hits £10 per week. |

FWIW, I live in a five bedroom victorian terrace, with no double glazing, windows that have draughts, a kitchen that is uninsulated, and open fires that allow drafts. In the winter I have the central heating on all day more or less because I work from home, we have several computers going 24/7 because of mine and my partners jobs, a NAS server on all the time, and sometimes a hot tub. It's rare that we hit £100 a month. Something sounds like it's not right.
Either that or perhaps your kid should invest in some extra jumpers and quilts. |

Yes, we had that problem when we moved in. Got the meter changed within two weeks. |

"That's crazy! I'm on a meter (prefer to load it up so know what I'm spending) in a one bedroom flat. In winter, both gas and electricity about £15 a week.
Get it checked! "
Used to spend about £20 a week in a 1 bed flat, it was terribly insulated, poorly fitting doors etc. I pay less now in a 2 bed on monthly DD (46 a month I believe and I'm usually in credit).
OP it sounds like an awful lot but of course it depends on the size of the property, how efficient it is and how the resources are used.
Does she have all the energy efficient bulbs and such? |

It was 20 a week for electric and 25-30 for gas a week thats for a 3 bed house that was warm to walk around with a tshirt on
that amount dosnt sound right another thing is your hot water cylinder element could be faulty or too small but only way to tell that is too turn it on see how much water it heats up
otherwise the meter has gone faulty or paying someone elses bill it does happen |
