So with Christmas fast approaching and most of you will likely venture out for a meal with family and friends, spare a thought for us the people that run around constantly, clearing messy tables up where kids have created their own mini earthquake with the pencils, sausages and the cutlery!! If sometimes we don't smile or near the end of the day we don't always give you the best service, it might be because we haven't stopped for 6 hours straight, we might need a wee/fag/food or break in general, we might be worrying about the tables that just can't get cleared or the dirty plates that have managed to get cleared are piling up behind the scenes with no hope of every sending up to the kitchen because they are rushed off their feet to, they haven't had time to clear the other dirty stuff away.
And spare a thought for us when something is missing from your plate, it might not be the kitchens fault but the servers fault that when trying to get lots of food orders out dropped the sweet chilli sauce all over the floor, herself and nearly caused an accident!
Do you really need another butter on top of the two you already had for your toast? No you don't because you left it on the table, you don't realise that another butter to you, means walking back to the gantry, putting a message on the till and having to wait until they have time to send one down.
I try to keep a smile on my face but if you see a server without one, she looks a little bit disheveled, the above reasons might be why, that server will leave that day hating her job, try her hardest to walk to the bus stop and the short walk home, then crawl into bed and won't move until the morning.
So if you go to a restaurant this Christmas time, give your server a smile, a nod to say 'you are doing ok'.

Don't forget they've probably been shouted at by someone who doesn't understand why they can't have that empty table because it's reserved for a booking.
They've been spoken to like shit because the portion size is either too small or too big (I've honestly had people moan it's too big!)
7 people are asking for things at the same time and really don't get the concept of waiting their turn. Instead of being polite they simply blurt...."you gonna take my order or what"
That table booked for 6 yet turned up with 8 and wonder why you can't seat them right away...then accuse you of ruining their Xmas with the relatives they only see once a year (yet forgot to book a place for) |

Christmas day tradition offshore was for all the department supervisors too serve the catering staff with their meal, then do all the washing up and clean down the galley and the mess room .....

I remember well the joys of waitressing having done it for several years to support myself through uni. The amount of derogatory comments I would hear! No student loans now but my feet still remain hardened joy of joys. It can be tough but at the end of the day, I really enjoyed it and would always try to remain positive. Take the breaks you're entitled to Geeky, when you are. I do empathise with waiting staff - at times people can be utter bellends but at the same time the staff can be crap occasionally. So anyways, don't be a twat and you'll find you get better service. |
