What does it say about modern football...

What does it say about modern football when players are more likely to speak out about sexual abuse than about being gay?

Clearly these allegations are only the tip of the iceberg and are lamentable and awful. But I wonder what it says about the culture within the game when players are more comfortable to speak out about historic abuse than their sexuality?

I do not give too hoots if they are gay. But hundreds have been abused, that does need discussion and suitable action.

I think it would dilute the wrong doings of both situation to compare them as like for like examples....

It's not a comparison, the two are totally different things and should be treated as such. Im simply trying to draw discussion on the topic of how homosexuality is perceived with the professional game

little house on the praire

I cannot see the correlation

Being gay and being abused are completly different

I also dont think it says anything about modern football. Tragically the abuse/alledged abuse took place within the circle of young footballers it could of been any sport or where any group of people are together

Sadly it's true in most sports. Remember how 'big' it was when Gareth Thomas the rugby player came out?

I agree it's a sad endictment on society but an openly gay sportsman will attract moronic abuse from a small section of opposition supporters. Is it worth the constant abuse both on and off the pitch or best to keep your private life private? It's bound to wear you down.

If I was a gay footballer I don't think I'd out myself until I retired. Sad to have to say that, but probably true.

I grew-up during a time when being openly gay was a hugely challenging circumstance in most walks of life .....

I can only imagine how victims of abuse face their challenges.....

Back stroke? Not a bit of it. I'm simply trying to open a discourse upon homosexuality within football. I think the revelations are appalling and disgusting and I feel for the victims.

I'm also not drawing a comparison between what an openly gay man may have to face and what a victim of abuse may go through.

I'm simply asking what it says about the culture surrounding football that sexual abuse is discussed and not homosexuality. Why is being gay within football such a taboo?

Perhaps I'm not articulating myself very well today

So that's a bit crap then. They could all be straight, but statistically there should be at least a handful.

Why?

Why should a man's sexuality have any bearing on his skills as a footballer?

That's one of the salient points, no ones sexuality has any bearing upon anything other than who they are attracted to, it has no bearing whatsoever upon any skills nor abilities

So from the several hundred thousand players registered to the PFA none are gay? I find that a ridiculous assertion

Im not saying that a man's sexuality has any impact on their ability to play football.

As I said before, I'm not a sports fan so please feel free to correct my assumptions here.

There are 20 clubs in the Premier league. If there are 22 players in each first team, thats 440 players.

The ONS say 1% of the population is gay, the Treasury think 6% and Stonewall think 5-7%.

So if we take the lowest figure, we would expect 4 or 5 players in the Premier league to be gay. If we take the highest figure we would expect 30 or 31 players to be gay.

The OP says there are no openly gay players. Which seems statistically unlikely.

Under uefa,or fifa rules a player doesn't have to divulge his sexuality,so why should some "come out" as being gay.it's not important.

What is very important is some coaches taking advantage of young boys.that is wrong, that is illegal and they should feel the full force of the law.

Actually my family and friends do know. I haven't googled the answer to your questions as I thought you could find that out yourself, there have been several high profile 'coming outs' in both cricket and rugby though. Football however has by far the largest participation in this country yet no gay participants...

And as for finding this post ridiculous that's fine, it's a public forum and you're welcome to your opinion. I'm trying to provoke discussion but I'm aware that people enjoy insults far more, personally I'd rather seek enlightenment than barbs but that's me

right so your family know about your sexuality and your friends. So im guessing any gay footballers nearest and dearest know. But i have no idea why someone should go to the media about it, if they dont want

Perceived response of fans and other players? There's been an outpouring of support for the players who've suffered abuse since the first few spoke openly about it. This must have encouraged others to be able to come forward.

There are certain sections of the population which are still extremely homophobic. These sections intersect with some of the most vocal and visible football supporters...

Or maybe being a role model and helping to dispel the stigma associated with being gay isn't for them either? Is it small minded to want the next generation of players, or anyone for that matter, to be able to have heterosexual and homosexual (other sexualities are available) role models?

You don't think it would be noticed by the press if one play brought along his boyfriend or husband whilst everyone else brought their wives and girlfriends?
