I need help if you please...

I'm looking for a suitable starter for a traditional Christmas dinner... the non veggies are having prawn cocktails (I'm aiming for a proper old school effort) and I asked the veggie at work what she'd like and she helpfully said the same as everyone else minus the meat!

Seems a bit mean to give her lettuce and Marie Rose sauce with a slice of lemon! I've googled but not come up with very much... any suggestions?

(I also have a seafood allergy in there too!)

My sister is a vegetarian and normally has stuffed peppers or mushrooms, or garlic mushrooms.

I meant suggestions for prawn substitutes... I think she just wanted to fit into the meal without being really obviously different...

Sorry that wasn't clear... if all else fails I'll go with something completely different.

Stuffed pepper/mushroom/courgette/aubergine is what I normally do. But that's instead of the turkey because all the veggies in our family eat fish & I normally do a fishy starter too.

Most stuffed veg can be prepared in advance, then just heated in the oven with the roast potatoes.

I made appetizers once... I used veggie ham slices, put them in a cupcake tin, then filled them with macaroni and cheese and baked it.

Not quite as classy as prawn cocktails but it tasted good

Grilled pepper/courgettes/mushroom... Not sure how that'll go down with the sauce though. Celery could work well a little mini salad

I wish I'd known! I wouldn't have made a dick of myself by saying 'soup'!

I was gonna say tarts as well. You could take it to the table and say 'are you the vegetarian tart?'

Yeah there was a mention of avocado in the google search which I thought sounded quite nice but then it went on to add vegetarian prawns and I was confused!

Today I learnt that Linda McCartney does "vegetarian prawns"... well I never.

Somebody suggested stuffed peppers... you could do those really little ones and stuff them with something that won't clash with the Marie Rose sauce, and sprinkle those in there as the prawn substitute?

DG, I think you should avoid the prawn cocktail and so another 70s starter that everyone can have.

It also avoids the caterers accidentally poisoning the guests with poorly stored prawns.

I was veggie for years. A mate once did a beautiful fried bass for everyone but did me the same sauce and accompaniment but with fried halloumi instead. It worked really well. Might not work with Marie Rose but if you did it with a harissa mayonnaise it would look similar to everyone else's. Or do an alternative old school starter with mushroom pâté on melba toast or an egg mayo (with paprika sprinkled on top for a full on retro vibe).

Sweetcorn, diced peppers, red onions, mixed in to the sauce with a sprig of parsley garnish.

Cheese freaks can share a pack of Jacobs crackers with the nut allergists.

A tasty soup and roll is always good.... if you want extra marks for presentation get the caterers to serve with soup inside the crusty rolls. So the roll is the bowl.
