My mum cant swim, shes terrified of water, bless her she attempted swimming lessons a couple of years back and only managed one. She says shes going to try again.
Me im a water baby, could swim perfectly by the age of three with no water wings and used to swim for the county. When im in water i become a different person.
I took my son swimming from 6 months, would of took him sooner but his first six months was over the winter period and i waited for the weather to pick up |

I can't swim either, but do my best to at least try..it all started at school, yes we had lessons, but unfortunately i had a very bad veruca,so missed most of it, or just watched from the sidelines, got very water phobic at one point, but intend to learn properly someday.

"Just had a text of a mate who's learning to swim and he's 48, good on him but I honestly thought most adults could swim "

As the OP shows, it's never too late. You may find your local authority runs adult learners classes or perhaps at a nearby college or university pool.
It's a great thing to be able to do. It may possibly save your life one day and you may take to it so well that you want to go and learn lifesaving.
I can't recommend it enough. |

I can't swim, ive had a real phobia of water since i was a child, my mum stopped taking me because i used to just scream every time she tried to get me in the water and cause such a scene everyone would just get ready and go because id just sit on the side crying, cant remeber any of this but have been told many times lol i do kind of remember going to the bath as a small child and being afraid to get in
I still get cold sweats when i see pools etc im ok im stuff like a jacuzzi but only if my head and shoulder is well above water, i couldnt lay back with my head on the side like lots do, but a big bath type tub is as big as i have ever gone
Ive never felt the need to learn how to swim as an adult because i dont go close enough to any deep water to be able to drown lol saying that i have made the effort twice, booked swimming lessons and never got as far as in the pool so i just stopped bothering |

I know of 2 in Yorkshire, one in Ilkley, one in Karesborough, both have been there for years
My Junior school ahd its own pool, was out door and unheated, we were forced to have swimming lessons in it twice a week, but only in summer (this was back in teh 70's long before H&S rules) apparently it is now heated and enclosed kids dont knwo they are born today |

I can swim, but would love to be able to swim easier with less effort. Some people glide effortlessly through the water. I always look like I'm drowning |

I was amazed to find so many British people who can't swim. In South Africa every single child who was capable of swimming was taught at primary school, it was part of the curriculum. Might also be because the water is too cold to swim for most of the year over here. |

We were taught at school too.
I just didn't get to do the lessons as I had some sort of skin condition and they wouldn't let me in !
I grew out of it with age (tho despite loads of testing no one ever pinpointed what it actually was), but by that point it was too late for school funded lessons and I've just never got round to it
It isn't on my priorities list
In the words of the 1970's advert, 'Meet Bussy, he swims like a brick' |

What about us non-swimmers, herewith known as drowners.
Would anyone be around to save us drowners ? How many lengths would the ladies do in the chams jacuzzi ? Lol
Or strokes of a length - oh dear didn't take long did it - apologies |
