Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
Use it as a filter. If they aren't happy with your grammar and spelling and you're not happy with them pointing it out then leave each other alone.
Have a look at all the grammar threads on here.

I tend to use txt speak a little simply because it's faster although I can't read when people use extreme txt speak, otherwise it's usually auto that trips me up, when people have profiles saying do not txt me in txt speak I don't bother to message, if they have such a hook up on grammar then what else are they so hung up on? I cba with that tbh |

no it's not just you, and my spelling and grammar isn't too shabby.
just ignore them, seems a bit weird someone would take time out of their day to message me about something that's not gonna change anything. |

my advice tell then to go fack themselves that way by making deliberate spelling mistake you your clear off message you will really get under there skin.
think of the sound of nails scraping down a char board that's the effect a message like that will have on the average spelling and grammar freak |

Everybody is different in what they consider important. Our profile has been read and read and double checked several times by myself before I consider posting it. Then I ask my husband to double check for spelling, grammar, and typos that I may have missed. If we send a message I will proof check it before I send. Not quite so anal about forum posts, but I have been known to delete and rewrite if I see a typo after posting. As I said we're all different in what we consider important. I for one, find attention to detail I important. I dislike sloppiness in any walk of life.

Apparently to some on here.if your spelling and grammar is poor it's a sign of laziness which means you're likely to be lazy when it comes to sex.
I think those people are too far up their own arses so unless you want anal sex with them, I'd tell them to f**k off |

If i cannot understand the message then I will ask what they mean but some people are really lazy at typing or using their phone to text and blame predictive text everytime.
I prefer someone who takes a bit more time to get it right. Just my preference and I have to admit at deleting messages with poor grammar, bad spelling etc. Sorry |

If a man contacts me and his profile and message are cluttered with errors spelling common words or simple homophones,eg their and there...to and too. That drives me crazy and I know I don't want to spend time with them.If a person's profile states they're dyslexic then I can make exceptions. In this age of self correcting devices bad spelling just shows a lack of effort tbh. |

No,but don't set me off on misplaced apostrophes, attempting to show a plural rather than the correct uses...possession or abbreviation.eg can't instead of cannot ?? lady's hat, rather than what I often see 'Lady's contact me' ughh.plural of lady is ladies.I'm pedantic, blame my old job, however if you disagree that being able to correspond correctly with others isn't important feel free to block me.
I expect to chat with a man I meet, if his 'written' performance isn't too good, what's his conversational skills going to be like? Has nothing to do with his sexual performance, more about do I want to spend time with him. I'll block you if you like Bladey but since we're not discussing a meet, I'm not convinced it matters that poor English puts me off wanting to meet someone.
Blocking wouldn't stop me seeing your crap English on here anyway so what's the point
As for my intelligence or lack thereof, feel free to question it because that changes nothing.
Poor English matters to me when it comes to meets and that's all. It's a turn off.
I worked at my English to get it to a good standard and I continue to work at it to keep it there. I'm not perfect but I'm above average. Anyone who can't be bothered with it, (dyslexia is a different matter), probably doesn't have similar values to me and probably isn't a good match. In that sense it's an indicator of incompatibility.
In the meantime, anyone intolerant of the indicators *I* use to suggest to me whom *I* may or may not wish to meet for a fuck, can stick that up as far as they can reach and then give it a shove with a broom handle.
But, Bladey, I will block you if you think that's unreasonable and would prefer I do. Just say. |

Accuracy and presentation (to the best of someone's ability) is something I find important. With writing I do make mistakes, but I will check what I write before pressing send in order to keep mistakes to a minimum. This is a personal value and a value that I'm entitled to have. The English language, in my opinion, is a rich, beautiful and evolving language and I would like to preserve that. It saddens me that some people, will judge someone being 'up their own arse' for having these values. I do agree though that nobody should be subject to uninvited criticism on their profile or messages.

I completely agree with you. On this site you can be racist, xenophobic and homophobic with impunity by hiding it behind a veneer of "preference", but mention that spelling and grammar is important to you and you're the devil incarnate.
Hopefully anyone who thinks this makes me arrogant or up my own arse will just block me accordingly because I have no interest in that chip on their shoulder. |

English is important to me too. My problem is with people who think those who can't spell or use incorrect grammar are lazy and therefore must be lazy at sex too.
Why should there be any correlation between the two? |

I don't think there's that correlation particularly. But I do think that if it's something you struggle with, you should make the effort. I struggle with face to face communication because I'm incredibly shy, but I make the effort to overcome that because I respect the other people I'm meeting enough to not want them to feel uncomfortable. I would like other people to do me the courtesy of doing the same, whatever form of communication is in question.
But I'm always quite open about that on here, so those who think it makes me an arsehole can avoid me accordingly. |

Ok here we go and I am going to let rip here.
I am good with numbers and accounting, I am good at understanding systems and processes
Ask me to write these down and i panic. I know I am not that good at spelling, and grammar. I can read and do read well
If someone was ever to suggest that fact I can spell makes me ugly and shit at sex I would say what basis is that based on
Tell me to tell you about social history, I could manage it. Ask me to write a 2 page document about social history I would panic.
For me I hate snobbery regarding spag, as well as some snobbery from us finance and it people towards creative people

It saddens me that some people, will judge someone being 'up their own arse' for having these values. I do agree though that nobody should be subject to uninvited criticism on their profile or messages.
Mrs
I completely agree with you. On this site you can be racist, xenophobic and homophobic with impunity by hiding it behind a veneer of "preference", but mention that spelling and grammar is important to you and you're the devil incarnate.
Hopefully anyone who thinks this makes me arrogant or up my own arse will just block me accordingly because I have no interest in that chip on their shoulder.
English is important to me too. My problem is with people who think those who can't spell or use incorrect grammar are lazy and therefore must be lazy at sex too.
Why should there be any correlation between the two? "
Not a direct correlation. But those who are big on accuracy, presentation and attention to detail, will probably apply that value to other aspects of their life. Likewise people who have an 'I don't care' approach to one aspect of life, I have noticed, often have an 'I don't care' approach to other aspects of life. It's natural to be attracted to people with similar values.

Slightly guilty though I wouldn't pm someone about it. I used to have a long distance thing with a guy from Hull and he always used to use been and being wrong, for example instead of saying I'm being reasonable he would say I'm been reasonable. Also noticed he wasn't alone in doing that, people on his Facebook (also from Hull) would use it in the same context, strange! |

Firstly, I said Dyslexia is a different matter entirely to having poor English.
Secondly, you were the one that generalised about people who care about English being up their own arse and where they could shove it. That includes me.
Thirdly, my reply to bottleman was pointing out *his* errors since he was correcting yours (and then, apparently, mine).
Like I said, we've no interest in meeting each other so I don't give half a blind rat's fart about your English.
You, on the other hand, effectively called me (along with everyone else who cares about English) up my own arse and told me where to stick my 'phone. If you think that gives you grounds to act all wounded, have at it. |

I'm not very good at spelling either, but it's not a problem with spell checks. My concern is people who are more than capable, but don't care or don't take pride in presentation. Presentation is a value I regard as important. |

Having re-read the post, I note you didn't call me up my own arse, Bladey, you merely strongly implied that by caring about English I am thick.

Personally I love it when I'm corrected by people who are wrong, when my English was correct.
Like the guy who arrogantly told me I meant "mute point" rather than "moot point" the other day.
When I defined both mute and moot for him he huffed about me using the right word in the wrong context. Except he was wrong there too. |

I am one of the most anal of people about times and organisation - I have three copies of everything if going awry
I organise things weeks and months in advance. However I know I am not great at spelling
I will admit I had something called displaxia as a child something that is linked to dislexia. It is related to a struggle with co ordination and balance.
I had to have extra pe lessons, and coordination lessons at hospital. I used to get stuff told to me that I was a cripple, and uncordinated
I couldn't ride a bike, or skateboard, (still can't) - however I have managed to learn to drive, and also managed to canoe in open water in Croatia and Mexico. It was hard work and mentally a struggle but I got there
Does that make me shit at sex or a bad lover, hey ho probably a little bit but at the end of the day it's what makes me who I am.
I have found techniques to work through it, and I often find people with dislexia do as well

Quite often I see some of my foreign friends (Dutch and German) using better spelling and grammar than British especially on FB. It's bad when a Dutch fella cannot read a post because his spelling is so bad.
Before I get shot down I do realise there are exceptions such as dyslexia etc. These are a different issue and usually quite obvious. It's unusual for a dyslexic person to get too, to and two wrong since they have different meanings. |

As already said though, your spelling is good - above average on here.
If you manage that despite the additional challenges, it points in totally the opposite direction to suggesting you're lazy about it and make no effort. |

Mine is a personal preference thing. How someone writes a message is directly related to how turned on I get.
I don't have anything against people who can or can't spell/type/use grammar. My grammar is fairly shocking tbh.
But (usually) if someone messages me and it's not well written, I'm not interested in them as meet (meat?) potential.
I like to chat online for quite a while before meeting so it's a crucial part of the build up for me.
Personally I can't understand why some women won't meet a guy based on their height?
I think we all have a type and preferences.
But to randomly message people and give them grief about their spelling is as bad as randomly giving someone grief about their physical appearance. It's nasty and hurtful, and makes me wonder if it's half-term because it would depress me to think grown adults are capable of doing this to other people.

If you'd read the thread you'd realise it's not about anyone thinking they're better than anyone else but something people use as an indicator of who is likely to be on the same wavelength as them. Like often attracts like. |

"Use it as a filter. If they aren't happy with your grammar and spelling and you're not happy with them pointing it out then leave each other alone.
Have a look at all the grammar threads on here.

My own personal feelings are that there is a difference between the art of conversation and the rules of spelling and grammar.
In life, I'm a 'get things done' kind of person working in a process driven environment. It may seem a strange analogy but, if I had to choose, I much prefer to talk to someone who has the ability to converse and communicate than someone whose grammar is perfection personified.
You can fail an exam for not knowing the answer, but you can't fail a meaningful exam for the occasional spelling or grammar error.
Only my opinion and plenty will disagree.
If you don't get it... and you are a grammar nazi.... then, need I say more? |

I'm not sure that the issue really is about grammar and spelling. We all have access to spell checks anyway. Surely nobody is that pedantic that they will nit pick over the occasional typo. I regard the issue is that some people write their profile or write a message and don't even read what they write before pressing send. I find too much there is a sloppy 'don't care' attitude in life. And it's that which I find a turn-off. Not the occasional forgotten coma!

This is a subject that always baffles me on fab.
I'm unsure whether it says more about those who can't spell or those who use it as 'a filter'.
I know we are all here for different reasons but blimey, essentially this is a NSA sex site, not auditioning for University Challenge.
It also strengthens my belief that we wouldn't meet people off the the forums. We want a good time socially and sexually, not to feel as though we are being examined and I would hate to think people thought us up our own arses. We are both intelligent people with degrees to our names, but our best quality? To get on with anybody. |

Quite. Anyone who feels they can insult me for caring about my language is as bad as the type of people who message others to criticise their English.
If I'm "thick" and "up myself" for caring how I, and others, communicate, so fucking be it. |

"I get a few e's and i's round the wrong way, get a word's spelling incorrect on occasion.....does it make me a bad person or make me a lazy slob, who knows "
Some people do make lazy assumptions/generalisations though: that'll never change.

Perhaps they get off on reading well written verse or text, C'mon, with all the oddball fetish's there are, it's not outta the realms..
Sitting there during countdown.. Consonant, vowel, vowel, consonant... That's enough to bring them to the vinegar strokes...
Spose the giveaway to finding these types is to look on their bookshelves and if there is a box of kleenex on it and the pages of the entire works of Shakespeare are stuck together..
So your bad grammar isn't just offending them, it's making them truly flaccid!! |

"I certainly wouldn't message someone to tell them that. However I do use it as a filter on messages I receive. .."
Indeed, messaging somebody to point it out is going too far, but I filter as well.
Must admit I'm sometimes tempted to ask some posters on the Stories and Fantasies forum to try using sentences and punctuation some time. |

"Accuracy and presentation (to the best of someone's ability) is something I find important.

No, you're right. However the spelling/grammar question always has a hint of condescending and is followed by the assumption they are thick or lazy.
If you said you only selected people due to hieight, that's fair enough, but if you followed it with because being short is an indication that your parents were inbreds, it wouldn't be acceptable. |

I usually filter without making any sort of comment at all. However, if I'm asked what my thoughts are, I'll say.
These threads have just as many, if not more, comments insulting people who do care about how English is used though, and they're usually generalisations. Rately does anyone draw a distinction between those that filter and those that would message someone to tell them they'd made a spelling mistake. I object to being lumped in with the latter category of people. |

My moral high ground has just collapsed due to an extra 'i' in height. That's an indication of poor eyesight!
If you feel 'lumped in' I apologise, but there is a distinct undercurrent on these threads of condescension.
In amongst the many reasons to find to not like someone, spelling seems to be rather strange. But hey, each to their own. |

I didn't mean you were lumping me in with anyone. A lot of posts do sound very much that way though and I'm seeing condescension and insults going both ways.
I'm not sure why this always becomes such a big thing.
It's uncalled for to insult people for not living up to one's own preferences and expectations, (in any sense, be that spelling, height, build, weight, whatever) but people are free to use whatever filters they choose to find others that float their boat.
It don't see it being any more complicated than that. |

"Quite often I see some of my foreign friends (Dutch and German) using better spelling and grammar than British especially on FB.
My other half is Dutch. English is his sixth language. I met him on here three years ago. He wasn't what I was looking for and I certainly wasn't for him, but he happened across my profile and made a comment about how refreshing to read one not in text speak. His made me chuckle.
His English is better than mine, so I understand where you're coming from. |

I think a lot of us get a little bugged when people use incorrect spelling.
Some people really don't know the difference between there, their, they're, to, too, of, off, advice, advise etc but most of us just let it go over our heads and don't mention it. Little point really.
What bugs me more is when those of average intelligence get a superiority complex and go out of their way to correct and offend people who don't give much thought to correct grammar as long as we all understand what they're talking about. |

I do pick up on spelling and grammar errors as my mum used to be a secretary and had to proof-read documents so I've picked it up off her! However I would never specifically message anyone to pick at them over their spelling/grammar errors; that would be just impolite, and in any case, that person may be dyslexic, and pointing out their mistakes would most likely offend them.
The only thing I would say however is good grammar can be the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse, or helping your uncle jack off a horse!!! |

Exactly that... conversation skills.
Conversation is a skill because it is subjective and therefore down to personal feelings, taste or opinions.
Grammar or spelling have none of the colour, artistry or prosaic associated with conversation. Language is beautiful because of the nuances and rich idiosyncrasies....
If anyone believes the two are inextricably linked.. then I despair..
I also don't really care...
I like a pear
Or pair
Or was that per....? |
