False News Stories

Apparently (unless this is also false news)? 51% of people now get their "news" from sources in fb!

However, huge numbers of these items are completely spurious. Fb are letting them through, because these false stories spread like a virus....with millions of people reading, and believing them...generating income for fb!

Is the same thing happening on the forums here? "Mis-news" being believed and followed by forumites?

Yes.

It's like people quoting "evidence" they've read on YouTube as if it's undeniable truth.

I struggle to believe anyone is so stupid as to believe Dailymash NewsThump type articles. And while sites like Southend News are far subtler they are also pretty obviously satire

I don't understand the outrage. Although it speaks volumes about people's gullibility and also what passes for journalism in this country when it's so easily confused

I am the reason Angelina left Brad. I told her we couldn't be together but she just couldn't live a lie anymore. True fact.

What I find even more frightening is that there are some that believe everything they're told on BBC News and Sky News etc

The news is out then? I am indeed the mystery woman.

I lured her into bed with my cry of poverty, she loves that apparently.

So she took pity on me and took me into her bed..then into her heart.

I rocked her world so hard that Brad never stood a chance. I feel terrible. I do not want fame or attention, I just need the world to know that I am truly and deeply sorry for being so amazing at oral.

Read an interview with Noam Chomsky yesterday where he was on about this exact phenomena and the result it had on the recent US election.

He was discussing how our information is becoming siloed. We generally interact with likeminded people and we tend to get our news from sources which lean towards our personal and political bias. As a result social media suggests things our 'friends' like or view. This then gives us a skewed version of 'news' reality.

Or mistrusts politicians and the mainstream media, but that guy on YouTube *definitely* isn't pushing an agenda...

Does that mean it's not true if it's in The Sun?

Apparently the "super moon" wasn't quite what they said either.

It was not, in fact, any closer to the earth....it had simply grown a bit larger......I know this is true because I saw it on fb!

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

"Apparently (unless this is also false news)? 51% of people now get their "news" from sources in fb!"

I think I read that the majority of Americans used Facebook as their primary news source, so that's probably the same source.

What was really worrying though was that the state was reported in the context of Facebook trying to provide "curated " news, ie only stuff you're interested in. The obvious problem is that it's a very short hop from

objective news about subjects that interest you

To

manipulative but believable nonsense that brainwashes you

It's going to get far worse soon - Adobe are working on a 'photoshop for voices' - VoCo.

You won't be able to be sure of anything you see... or hear.

One of my pet hates.

The number of people who see something on FB and just share it and comment on it like its fact without doing any simple research drives me mad. Snopes and hoaxslayer are easy enough etc.

Even the spoof papers whip up anger as people believe it!

Um... that's a fail. A very serious fail.

And whoever said that needs to grow the fuck up.

Relying on facebook for news?

Come the fuck on....That's just frikking dumb.

People need to build up their Bullshit Detectors, which is, **cough** incidently, totally necessary equipment in today's post-factual world...

Nope. Everything I post is factual. Considered. Truthful. Not a hint of sarcasm
