That little engine light

Just came on as I was dropping the Mrs off at the train station, car seems to be running fine so I'm thinking a sensor issue, although when I first switched it on the engine was shuddering slightly for a few seconds but then ran normally......any mechanics fancy guessing what the problem might be fire I take it the garage? The fan belt has also been squeezing a lot on the cold wet mornings. |

It seems pretty clear to me.
You've got a bulb working.
Try taking out the bulb. If the car still works, it was clearly there as a manufacturing error.
If not put it back, thus completing the standard helpdesk routine of switching it off and on again. |

You should be okay then.
We've never had a problem with a blue car.
If it doesn't go out soon, try hitting it on the bonnet with a whippy little branch, just to make sure.

If you take it to a garage they will plug it in and tell you exactly why the light is on and what sensor it is that's gone, might be crank sensor if it's juddering at start up but just get it plugged in as it could be anything!!! |

Though seriously, Honda say:
"Engine Management Light.
Like all of the above this should appear when the engine is switched on and then switch off when the engine starts. If it remains on, your vehicle should be checked as soon as possible due to a potential fault with the engine management system. If it flashes whilst driving, reduce your speed untl the light illumincates constantly, if it continues to flash, avoid heavy accleration and stop driving to seek assistance"
We've had it for issues ranging from a sticky recirculating value, which blew the turbo, to one of the kids had put a pound coin in the CD player(there were sensors linked to the accelerator in there)
Hope you make it to work okay, and hope it turns out to be nothing serious. |

I had a Machanic prove the problem with cheaper fuel.
These cars are so sensitive with computer management, anything can flip that light on.
Get it checked and your own investigation on it.
I ran my fuel down for a few week on esso. I put Morrisons in and then the light came in within a mile of driving again. Go figure. |

I've got a Mazda 6 and a number of warning lights come on if you turn the steering wheel to full lock! It's a known error. I just have to remember to disconnect the battery briefly to reset them before it goes in for it's MOT. |

Could be anything. You can get a Bluetooth code reader on eBay and a free app for your smartphone to read the code and reset the light. Chances are that whatever the fault is will put the light back on again unless you replace the faulty part though.
I do chuckle about the number of posts on forums totally unrelated to cars that ask about car maintenance. |

This time of year and given that you say it spluttered briefly I'd hazard a guess at it being the MAF (mass airflow sensor). It's common for them to fail and the car to run almost normally (sometimes better).
Like others have said though, get it plugged in and have the code for current and stored faults read. |

Fuel filter?
It was interesting to read the comments about the supermarket fuel. After problems with our last car (diesel) we only used the premium Shell stuff. It actually did give better mpg, sufficient to cover the difference in cost, and we never had a problem with it again.
We switched back to a petrol car once that one was 5yrs old.

There was an incident with Morrison's fuel a few years back, quite a few engines were damaged.
Paying that little bit extra is definitely worth it. Premium fuels (not supermarket stuff) have additives and cleaning agents added at the pump which is very important for modern vehicles with high pressure, common rail fuel injection systems. |
