I knit and crochet, although I've not been doing much of either since joining Fab

I buy all my yarn from a small independent store close to home. It's a great shop, they will help you out if you are struggling with a pattern and are happy for you to just drop in to chill out, knit and gossip. They put loads of good stuff on face book, blogs etc. They have a web shop and do mail order too.

I crochet. Sometimes I just get some wool and crochet a square because I enjoy it

You don't need to tell me I know I'm weird.

Aww nothing wrong with crocheting squares.

When the yarn shop I mentioned was moving to larger premises last year they invited all of their customers to knit or crochet a square for a community blanket for the new shop. The shop owner sewed them all together and put it on the sofa she has in the chill out area of the shop.

I never do anything with them though

I want to make one of those random pattern throws. I just need to decide on the colours.

Just make it random colours, it doesn't need to be any special design. Just make all your random squares the same size and sew them together when you've got a few. Once you've done it you can use it to snuggle under on the sofa on cold winter evenings

Wow who new there were swingers who knit. I like to crochet too. Got a ridiculous stash which will outlive me I think! Like to make sweaters and cardigans for me mainly rather than cock warmers but thanks for the suggestion! X

I've often thought about giving it a go. I have this dream of knitting myself some funky socks. I hear socks are difficult to knit though.

Socks can be tricky, particularly if you make individual toes.

Individual ones ?? Do you mean instead of one big one that goes over both feet ?

I think I'd start with a regular kinda sock. My mother tells me that you use three knitting needles for socks. I think I'd need to work up to it. How long does it take to learn the basics?

Basics are easy. The rest is hard. I hadn't knitted since I was taught the basics as a kid by mum mum, nan and gran until the last few years and I had to watch a couple of vids on YouTube to remember how to cast on and off but I hadn't forgotten the rest. Or get thee to a knitting circle. Plus, they have ladies. Of all ages.

I agree. The basics are easy, it's the rest that's a bit harder. I think YouTube is great but it helps to have someone show you in person first.

I'm going to check it out. YouTube is a great place to start. Those last couple of sentences pricked my ears up. Maybe we could start a Fab knitting circle? We'd be naked, obviously

You usually use four needles for socks. It looks tricky but its actually really easy. You only use two needles at any one time, the others are just sat there holding your stitches

I (her) enjoy knitting. I tend to knit baby shawls and give them to anyone I know who's expecting when I finish one. It's so relaxing until you find a mistake 3 rows down

Wonders off to find the knitting bag...
