Having brawn doesn't mean someone lacks brains, especially considering the double meaning of the word. As for brains I do like a quick mind as a key facet of an attractive personality. On its own it doesn't do anything for me and neither does brawn.

Intelligence and ambition are a turn on for me because I'm arrogant enough to believe I have both and I like that mental stimulation but I don't think it necessarily has to be without brawn - there are all sorts of intelligence and they manifest in a variety of ways, the two aren't opposing poles. Oh and passion for a subject however obscure is hot. Stream of consciousness for the win.

You can also be highly intelligent, have common sense, interesting life experiences and not take yourself and your intellect seriously. Like I said previously, I value cleverness. But other traits are equally important in making a person I want to spend time with one on one. Too often on here I see intelligence being portrayed as something to avoid for NSA meets since it invariably draws the 'but they have no common sense, aren't emotionally intelligent, are boring, lack social skills, think they're better than anyone else' type comments. Or accusations of elitism. Which in my experience patently isn't true.

Fucking pretentious Oxford interviews! I went through two lots of interviews each two years running - didn't get in but the last interview lasted nearly 4 hours and was conducted like a KGB grilling! Seriously! Tiny room! Prof in sunglasses behind desk, assistant stood blocking out the little light coming through the small window and the only light from a desklight positioned to only light up the bit of desk underneath it. It was a gloomy bloody day too! Abd fuck was it a grilling! Prof was one of the truly rudest people I've ever met. I later learnt that he had a reputation for reducing candidates to tears. On one occasion he had reduced one girl to a blubbering wreck so frogmarched her straight to Oxford station and put her on the first train that entered the station. When she eventually realised she was going to the completely wrong end of the country she managed to change trains till she got home, only to realise her bags were left behind in the Prof's study!

I should think the bastard's dead now! He wouldn't survive behaving like that now I hope! Oh yes, btw his subject was... music!

I have worked with guys with stratospheric IQ/intelligence, but still need their mum to dress them.

For me it's the ability to 'bounce' off other people...be interesting and interested. Vivacious and eloquent is a great combination. And the ability to converse on different levels, with different people-and be quick witted enough for it to be on topic, funny, and intelligently delivered? Ooof

I should think the bastard's dead now! He wouldn't survive behaving like that now I hope! Oh yes, btw his subject was... music!

I am knowledgable, I'm slightly intelligent, never taken an IQ test, can not regurgitate the dictionary, know big words that are used within my field of interest, common sense? Yeah I have that (sometimes)

All my own opinion, which I'm entitled to.

"

You can also be highly intelligent, have common sense, interesting life experiences and not take yourself and your intellect seriously. Like I said previously, I value cleverness. But other traits are equally important in making a person I want to spend time with one on one. Too often on here I see intelligence being portrayed as something to avoid for NSA meets since it invariably draws the 'but they have no common sense, aren't emotionally intelligent, are boring, lack social skills, think they're better than anyone else' type comments. Or accusations of elitism. Which in my experience patently isn't true."

Well said. I am intelligent and prefer to meet intelligent people - nothing wrong with that!

Intelligence is not a function of knowledge or education or intellectualism - it is simply the capacity for logical thought.

"IQ isn't really a good measure of intelligence

Interestingly that was the subject of one of the interviews I had for Oxford Uni

I didn't get in but I gave it a whirl to see what would happen. At 18 I had bugger all to put on an application form so decided that the fact I got in to MENSA when I was 12 was something to write down.

The guy obviously picked up on it. Still a conversation that I remember today.

I left my Cambridge interview feeling like a dumbass cos I just blagged my way through the questions but then I was the only one out of the group of candidates who knew how to navigate our way to the other side of town to the maths building for the next part of the day so I didn't feel so bad Clever people can really lack common sense

Oh and I got into Mensa but decided not to join cos it sounded so boring.. The exam for that doesn't require intelligence just logic and guesswork

I dunno, MENSA isn't all it's cracked up to be and their IQ tests are dodgy as ****. Not the most reliable test by a long way. They want people to join because they make money from members.

My IQ (tested accurately - the horrors of having a psychologist in the family as a child) is 128, and honestly, all my classmates went to Oxford and Cambridge and I felt thick as f**k.

But I look at their lives now, and they aren't more special than anyone else's. I've been privileged enough to have done some cool, amazing stuff in my life. Some academic and some just randomly cool. Mostly I fucked up the academic stuff though. For reasons.

Being academic/clever/intelligent/a high achiever is an interesting trait. No more and no less.

It can also be incredibly isolating. It's not all good. (Not talking from personal experience as 128 isn't that high, but the really high IQ people do struggle socially.)

Common sense is a very broad term though. Someone said they had common sense because they found a building others couldn't find. That's spatial skills?

You can be high in some parts of an IQ test and low in others. I was good at spatial but very bad at coding (and yep I'm rubbish at foreign languages).

I've been reading a lot about executive functioning skills.

That's why a lot of high IQ people can still struggle to dress themselves. If your EF skills are shot, you're screwed. Things like motor planning. Cognitive processing speed. All that stuff is crucial.

"The 'clever people are stupid at normal stuff' thing is mostly a load of bollocks."

I think there is a subsection that is. I have a very clever sibling. Who's also a bit of an idiot.

I don't think it's true for all exceptionally clever people though.

And everyone is good and bad at a whole variety of things. So it's sort of an extension of that.

Just because someone's a nuclear physicist doesn't mean they are good at ironing. But it stands out more when a "clever person" is bad at something. So it's more memorable.

"The 'clever people are stupid at normal stuff' thing is mostly a load of bollocks.

So it's more memorable."

I'd agree with twistandtwirl on the mostly bollocks aspect.

It irks me how smug people can get with the whole 'I may not be smart but I've got common sense' routine.

But I do like your physicist and ironing example.

I suspect those of you describing people who are intelligent but 'useless' in some areas are referring to people with some sort of developmental/learning disability such as autism/dyslexia/dyspraxia.

I'm on the autism spectrum so I have executive functioning problems and can relate to this, it's frustrating having extreme strengths and extreme weaknesses.

It's the cold weather. Everyone is at home keeping warm, watching internet porn. It's overloading the satellites and slowing everything down

Funny how everyone started rattling on about intelligence and commonsense.

The op was particularly talking about high iqs.

Im sure we all want people with intelligence and common sense.

Mensa isn't just for rocket scientist nerds. There are numerous Mensa members on here, and many more who could be but aren't.

God forbid, people might feel proud of being clever or having particular academic achievements. Let's cut them back down to size!

One of those human nature things unfortunately. It's why I didn't want anyone in school to know I'd had my IQ tested. And then came assembly...

"I have worked with guys with stratospheric IQ/intelligence, but still need their mum to dress them.

For me it's the ability to 'bounce' off other people...be interesting and interested. Vivacious and eloquent is a great combination. And the ability to converse on different levels, with different people-and be quick witted enough for it to be on topic, funny, and intelligently delivered? Ooof

Apparently so, but you still refused to meet me. "

You had your chance...
