What I don't understand is why California was not considered a key state when carries 50 electoral votes? That alone pushed Hilary into the lead ! I know it was likely to go to Clinton (though nothing is predicable in this election) but they hadn't mentioned the significance of California before? Anyone know why?

I'm finding it rather depressing how he's doing so well. I think they've focused on those states with propensity to change hands and that have fairly large influence - whereas California was assumed much less volatile.

I don't think she's gunna win. She'll get Pennsylvania, but the map just doesn't look good for her.

So the republicans are retaining the Senate, Congress, will likely win the Presidency and with it the Supreme Court. I just don't know what the next 4 years are going to look like.

Not good for anyone who is not a WASP. Extremely bad for the Clintons and anyone who criticises the Pres or has upset him in the past, and not too hot for any young female who comes in contact with him. Not too good for the US economy either, the american people are about to get a rude awakening when they find out that the successful business man is actually a twice bankrupted crook and that they have mistaken the TV program 'Your Fired USA' for real life and that they have given a madman control of the largest nuclear arsenal in the world!

For Europe and the rest of the Western world it looks particularly bleak. We will all get trade deals...

Give Trump anything he wants or he will take it or allow his mate Vlad take it.

Maybe we will get lucky and the Secret Service will get out the open presidential limo and take him for a ride through some of the Chicago projects, then on to Baltimore stopping off in Harlem before giving him a whistle stop tour of the west coast Hispanic slums of LA, San FranCisco and finishing up with a drive through San Dagio before a quick trip into Tijuana.

So they opt for a billionaire who knows nothing of the American Middle Class, but a lot about reality TV. Someone whose used immigrants in his own businesses and avoided paying health benefits and minimum wage, but criticises immigration. Someone who degrades women, disabled people and LGBTQ. Someone who is going to slash taxes for the richest Americans. Yadda Yadda Yadda. They were stuck between a rock and a hard place, looks like they'll all get squeezed now. Scary times ahead.

Compared to Hilary and what she's done he's a bloody saint.

She's done deals internationally that have benefited her financially. She's deleted emails and according to what was said earlier that's a crime because it was evidence and anyone else would be in prison now. Then she's recorded stating they should have rigged the vote in South Africa.

And people want her in to run America.

Donald ain't innocent in a lot of things but compared to her he's not that bad.

Also it's shaken American olitics to its core. It let's the Clintons and Democrats know that the people they are supposed to represent are not happy.

California is almost always a Democrat state. So they count the states that are mostly certain democrat or republican, and the real battle goes for the swing states. It's very similar to uk pass the post electoral system, where you know upfront many circunscriptions would never change...

FL, MI, PA, WI are the ones holding hope from disaster now

In May 2015 I woke up to find a Tory majority that swiftly set about dismantling the only humane things to have come out of the previous few years rule.

Then in June this year I woke up to find that we were walking away from something that has largely proved beneficial in my lifetime thanks to fear and anger.

You'd think I'd be getting used to waking up to electoral shitstorms, these last couple of years, but no. I still believed that democracy works.

I may have given up on that now *facepalms*

I think the conclusion I draw is this: it has been said that neither Hillary or Trump are fit candidates to stand for President. I'm going to go further: the American people themselves are not fit people to vote in a democratic process to choose their political rulers.

America needs to bin democracy and embrace dictatorship! And so does Britain. We have now had more than ample evidence this year that democratic electorates are ignorant and stupid and unfit to determine their future.

Perhaps we need ultra-communist dictatorship North-Korean style. That may be the only satisfactory political solution the world over!

And then people wonder why Brexit happened and Trump happened when you read this nonsense from someone who clearly thinks he knows best.

What's even more laughable is you've posted above about Hitler yet here you post about having a dictator in charge like Hitler.

Pmsl.

But if you had 1979 Thatcher on all fours naked in front of you now, you would, wouldn't you? Maybe hard and fast up the arse just to make her squeal...

But you would...

You correctly identify a major political dilemma with which I am wrestling in my mind. But Hitler wasn't communist. And Trump's politics is not entirely unfascist.

LOL!!! That's what I was thinking! Love him or loath him - you have to hand it to the guy! He has pulled off quite a trick! Zero political experience and yet the White House is about to get an interior decoration of gold leaf and Trump stamps all over!

I've been working nights and have followed the whole thing, thought from the start he would win.

Just goes to show that all the negative campaigning. Does not work. When Hillary was having a selfie-fest with the movie stars and pop stars I thought to myself that would backfire. Donald gets up to speak and says 'it's just me' - I thought that was a good move.

The media have been out to destroy Trump and the polling machinery appear to have got it drastically wrong too. I suspected all along that may people would be 'secret' Trump voters. People are tired of political correctness and the 'offence' and victim culture.

He will not be controlled by Capitol Hill. He will do exactly what he likes. I'm just waiting fkr him to make a speech describing Obama with the N word. The guy's utterly evil! And he is now the most powerful man in the world! Well done America! Slow hand-clap!

And as one Radio 4 commentator has observed, the KKK and white supremacists have had their best night ever! If I was a non-white in America I'd be finding the fastest way out of the country! Especially if I was Obama who, like Hillary will be hunted down by fair means or foul by Trumps mafia!

Quite a few hispanics and African Americans voted for Trump. What has Obama done for them?

"There goes the special relationship.

No, it will be the same. Despite the jaded UK media attempts to demonise him Trump likes the UK."

If by "demonise" him you mean "report the actual words he's actually said" then yeah, sure they're all out to get him. He doesn't like the UK. He couldn't give two shits about the UK, except at the point he thought Farage would help.

"Didn't expect that when I went to bed.

Whatever your views on the US Election (or even Brexit) you have to ask why these two global impact elections have gone the way they have. Why are people voting the way they have?

Because they're pissed off with their lives. "

Or maybe just maybe they decided that they was tired of an establishment full of corruption and wanted an end to it even if that means voting for trump who is far from perfect.

I don't care what people think as most of you seen pro Clinton but i for one applaud the people that voted against the status qou and corruption.

Just like Britain, america have a new path in front of them and you know what it might just might be a positive one.

I feel as depressed/stunned as I did when I woke up after brexit day!

I just don't get how countless millions of apparently educated people can make (in my view and in the market's view) such shit and bigoted decisions!

I really do think we've regressed decades - and this is all China (with its disregard for human rights) needs to take a huge leap forward in establishing an even bigger share of the global economy!

I believe that within a very short time scale the 'superpower' that is the USA will no longer be a superpower!

Sad day!

"On the plus side we often fear what we don't understand and I don't understand Trump. Will he be that bad?"

Who doesn't understand Trump?

He is a twice bankrupted fraudster and conman who is proud that he and his corporation has paid no local or federal taxes in the past 20 years.

He has told his supporters that if they got charged for attacking hecklers at his rallies he would pay their legal bills.

He has boasted that as a celebrity he could sexually assault any young woman and they could not stop him.

He has boasted that his teenage daughter is 'a piece of ass' and that if she were not his daughter he would do her.

He has said he will order US armed forces to use torture.

How much do you need to hear before you get an idea of the man?

Need I go on?

Just like Britain, the "anti-establishment" and "anti-corruption" voters have been taken in by the claims of two middle aged rich white businessmen in terrible jackets. It doesn't get much more establishment than that.

Some of what he said was taken out of context but perhaps his 'politically incorrect' bluntness resonated with a few people? Just as Sarkozy is in France now.

Ah, taken out of context. There is no context that makes some of his proclamations anything other than hate fuelled, meaningless and designed to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Looks like it worked.

I think the western world has had enough of the whole 'inclusive', "in it together" mantra that most countries tell us we should live by.

Heard one guy from Mexico, who goes to work in the US saying "it's the end of the American Dream". The notion that anyone can go to America and be rewarded for how hard they work. Is it the end though? There'll still be immigration, just not an open door policy, especially in the South, that's been happening for years.

I don't know. I get what you're saying but Trump will get things done and maybe the world will be a safer place for it. Time will tell.

It's definitely a sign that the majority of people both here and there have had enough of the Establishment.

Personally I think Trump is exactly what the world needs. Think of him as a kick up the backside telling us to sort ourselves out and produce better candidates.

With my 'apparently educated' I was actually referring to Brits there as well as U.S. Citizens!

Despite over a decade (minimum) of education - many people seemed to be incapable of understanding/taking part in any kind of reasoned debate and instead respond only to 'sound bytes' - if they hear a few they like the sound of then they vote that way!

They say every era had its day (Rome etc) and I think this could well be the beginning of the decline of the West - and with it the best of the things that it had tried to achieve in recent years - global democracy, an end to global starvation/water shortage/preventable diseases etc!

I'm bloody glad I don't have a crystal ball - and I feel desperately sorry for my children and their future children!

This result has been 8 years in the making and has been funded by 'the second largest US corporation you have never heard of' (google it) and its owners use of the money they would otherwise have had to pay in federal taxes (in the USA corporations can divert money from taxes to fund 'charities' and control how the 'charities' spend that money) to fund an organisation that funded directed and controlled 'the tea party' of the GOP.

I think we might see a somewhat stoic and gracious in victory Trump. Remains to be seen.

Somewhat typically the left-wing UK press are indicating that people will now want to flee America.

They don't learn do they.

Fantastic, the conspiracy theories start.

However, Clinton had the pop-stars and virtually all of the media across the Western World. Doesn't appear to have worked does it.
