Current news....people going to doctors with colds, bruises etc..... RIDICULOUS,!
Stop being wimps....the doc can't give you anything for a cold or a cough. It's viral! (Different if cough is persistent...could be other causes). Don't demand anti-biopics as they do nothing for colds etc. and you probably won't finish the course so the whole world of bugs become immune!
Draining the NHS of billions a year. Loading up future problems for real drug treatments for real illnesses. Get a grip you pussies!
And breathe....rant over and I know it may not apply equally to the good folk of fab forums....but it gets my goat (as my daughter is a junior Dec and wants to be a GP) ......it does need sorting don't you think? |

Moaning doctors, people have always been the same if they do not like the terms and conditions then don't get onto general practice join the UN and help in war zones "rant over" |

People do visit the doctor unnecessarily. Is it always those that would be entitled to free visits should charges be introduced? I'm not sure. What about the "worried well" the educated people who read articles that have "consult your GP before attending the gym/taking this alternative medicine/starting this fad diet". An interesting programme to watch is "GPs Behind Closed Doors" although I realise it's edited it's a bit of an eye opener too.
Let's educate not blame. Put more money into training and supporting GPs. |

That's always the problem. People that drain the NHS are except of charges.

No socialism involves taking only what one needs.
Sadly there was only one society that tried it properly, and we helped crush it.

What you say makes sense O.P. for the fit, young and able.......
There are many for whom the catching of a cold is a serious issue ( my daughter for one )
Imagine we take this line with all resources.
e.g. Do you have your heating or fire on now ? Don't you know about global warming ?
Everyone tells everyone else to stop wasting money....... yet the world could function just as easily without it.
We just wont.

On other hand they wanted to book a pointless review in that wasnt needed and a complete waste of time..... why!!! |

I think you need to educate yourself a little more about what it is actually like to be a GP and their actual concerns (which directly affect their PATIENTS by the way!) rather than calling them 'moaning doctors'. |

GPs do of course recognise the problem the OP's post. It's why they get secretaries to ask what a patient's symptoms are when they try and book an appointment. But the general consensus whenever that topic us discussed on here is that is a huge invasion of privacy and the vast majority of people seem incensed that they are asked such things by a mere secretary.

Not strictly on subject but I think it's silly how I get free prescriptions for life because of my underactive thyroid. Fair enough getting that medication. That's a help but I get everything free. I could go to the doctor just because I'd ran out of paracetamol. Of course I wouldn't do that but it must cost them a fair bit. |

What truly drains the NHS is the pharmaceutical companies controlling the market with crazy prices, and the dreadful waste following ill thought through short term decisions by senior management and lack of consultation with those in the NHS who are delivering the service!!! So when they discover their plan doesn't work in practice (because they didn't ask the right people in the first place!), they have already wasted a few million. So they scrap it and spend MORE money trying to undo the mess and create a NEW plan! After 25 years in the NHS I have seen back room tactics at senior level that would make Donald Trump cry! (And he isn't known for his sensitivity!)
An example of this was a new build hospital years ago....where they didn't consult the ITU nurses when building the ITU so the
specialist beds could not get through the doors INTO the ITU! So walls came down, delays in moving patients, costs soaring through the roof! That is ONE example! They also totally forgot to include a sluice area in two wards! Again - lack of appropriate consultation! Anyone familiar with working in hospitals will fully understand the implications of that! You know the NHS spends huge amounts on communication training ??? Waste of time when people don't have common sense!

When you have a condition you can't help, you have to have creams and medication to treat it and you are expected to pay. Costs a fortune.
Then...yeah, you get those. The ones who go for calpol, gaviscon and other shit that you can buy in a chemist.

From my experience it's largely a myth that the NHS is saturated with "management". Unless of course people want clinical staff wasting their time undertaking the management and financial tasks which are inevitable and essential in multi billion pound organisations. |

Our surgery has loads of posters about antibiotics not helping colds.
Bruises though - well it depends on the circumstance . Maybe they are a DV victim and reaching out? Doesn't leukaemia present with bruises as a symptom too? Not all as cut and dried as it first appears. |

"You know what really gets my fucking goat.
When you have a condition you can't help, you have to have creams and medication to treat it and you are expected to pay. Costs a fortune.
Then...yeah, you get those. The ones who go for calpol, gaviscon and other shit that you can buy in a chemist.
And the bloody meth crew.
Stop smoking help through the doctor

Smokers have payed in far more to the government coffers than anyone else, at the cost of there health. They should be first in line for NHS treatment. The duty on the fags pays for the £3k / month medication gluttons need after giving themselves type 2 diabetes so they should shut their fat mouths. Doing so would not only reduce the hypocrisy but also keep pies out |

Having worked for the NHS for years, I have mixed views re a small charge to see your GP, I think it would have some benefits but once brought in, it questions the very foundations of the NHS being 'free at the point of entry!'
PS...as I always insist on socials first, I am not free at the point of entry |

While I have no intention whatsoever to try to defend the outrageous statement to which you are responding, the following are the top two risk factors, taken from the Diabetes UK website:
"You’re overweight or have a high Body Mass Index (BMI). Check your BMI on the NHS choices website."
"You have a large waist (more than 80cm/31.5 inches in women, 94 cm/37 inches in men or 90cm/35 inches in South Asian men)."
The link with age is less severe, and is thought to be linked to increasing weight and decreasing mobility as we age.
Without wishing to hark back to Socialism, there is an element of self-help in reducing ones risk factors required if we are to help the NHS cope.

Do you agree that certain pre existing conditions put you more at risk? Gestational diabetes for one?
So whilst I agree that weight contributes, I think throwing the term gluttony in, is deliberately offensive.
It's where you draw the line, alcohol related illness costs the NHS loads and all the unneeded 999 calls to people pissed on a night out. So there are lots of drains on resources, not just one.

Ok I'm fat and have type 2 diabetes so i must be costing the NHS 3k a month, right?
Well for your information i visit the doctors once a year for my diabetes health check which involves a blood test and the nurse checking the health/circulation in my feet. I don't take any medication at all for diabetes or any related conditions and have never been to the hospital to see a consultant for it. Exactly how does this cost 3k per month?
I don't even take up the offer of a free flu jab which i am entitled to do having diabetes. |

We are talking in general terms, so there will naturally be exceptions. And I have already said that I didn't like his general tone. It simply makes sensible discussion less possible.
But surely you can't deny that we all must help the NHS by playing our part and reducing our risk factors, whether that be eating more healthily, reducing alcohol consumption or simply looking before we cross the road?
Tbf he is right about smoking though, they are net contributors to the exchequer. |

Yes I agree, but I'm glad we still have ethics committees to look at what is seen as a priority.
As the poster above has so rightly put, her diabetes isn't costing £3k per month. The whole ethos of the NHS is healthcare for all. If we start demonising certain sections of society , it's a slippery slope. |

While I can sense the emotion in that paragraph, I'm not sure I see the logic.
How can "we have a duty to minimise our risks by eating healthily" be 'demonising' or a 'slippery slope' to anywhere other than a healthier nation? |

It's always put down to the "fatties". I see it all the time. Plus sized models get slammed by fake people who just "care" People have shouted things at me like "salad dodger" and so many people seem to act like it's their business. These people wouldn't go up to someone smoking and remind them why they should quit or go up to some bloke who's off his face on drugs and tell him to think about his life choices.
These people are also known as bullies. |

I'm sure 8" shared between a group of people during an energetic bout of strenuous exercise would be within acceptable bounds.

Treating Type 2 diabetes costs the NHS £8.8 billion a year currently. The government collets zero from those with the condition.
Treating smokers costs the NHS £2.7 billion. The government collects £12 billion in tobacco duty.
Smoking is branded a "disgusting habit"
Over eating and not exercising isn't.

Would charging people to visit the Doctor resolve the issue ?. Or would those who would be exempt from charges still abuse the system.
You can be proud of your daughter for having achieved the necessary qualifications to be a junior Doctor . A demanding course and a lot of hard work. |

Your father is a rare case. 95% of type 2 in the US is caused by lifestyle choices. There's no reason to suspect this wouldn't be the case in the UK.
