Gunpowder, treason and plot!
Penny for the guy?
Lol, all harmless fun. My question to you, dear reader, is a simple one. Would we still be allowed this celebration if Guy Fawkes was Muhammad Fawkes, a Muslim? |

You mean burning a muslim on your bonfire and celebrating him not blowing up Parliament?
Probably not, as we don't tend to have remembrance days for recent events.
If it had happened back then, we probably would still be celebrating. |

I like the whole celebration but I never understood how it was something that was celebrated in any case. Burning an effigy feels sooooo...Salem witch trials to me. |

*Portuguese is not technically a religion. Unless something has changed recently? |

I tried explaining it to a German girl on a flight back from Denver once.... the look of horror on her face will haunt me to the grave! |

I seem to recall that the celebrations around Guy Fawkes lean more towards an attempt to continue the celebrations around Halloween/Samhain at a time when even Christmas was banned.
"Please Mr Puritan, could we at least celebrate your survival from the evil plot? "
Hence why most of the traditions don't actually make sense when you analyse them.

Burnt on a bonfire....pah you don't know how lucky you are, they dug me up after I'd died from being shot, decapitated me and stuck my head on a pole outside Westminster.

I can well imagine we WOULD have been celebrating this until the last few decades... now someone would no doubt claim to be offended (and not necessarily who we would first assume as such) and the event would be cancelled. |
