why are non swingers referred to as 'vanilla'.....where does the term derive from ?

I think it comes from way back where swinging socials in Italy would only take place in the local Gelateria.

In those days they didn't have lubrication and would use the ice cream, the cheapest being vanilla which was always first choice.

Vanila means plain and uninteresting. Now im sure many vanilas have a fantastic sex life but its just a term used by swingers. I think the bdsm scene call swingers vanilas
