in the night garden

The HTML code for the '&' character is '&'

There seems to be a glitch with the code fab uses to prevent html being pasted into profiles and posts that conjures this error up occasionally.

Certain characters are reserved as special characters and are used in computer programming. The Ampersand is one of them, so in order to display it as plain text so the programme doesn't try to execute it as a command a series of codes were developed to allow these special characters to be rendered as plain text.

The all start with & and end with ;

In between those characters is an abbreviation of which character you want to display - in the case of the ampersand it's 'amp' giving you a code of & to generate an '&' on screen.

A space in a line of text is   (non breaking space).

To see the & I have used in this post the cosing behind these forums are set to look for any instance of it appearing and replace it with & which is then inserted into the database in place of the singular & that was typed. This prevents the server getting it confused with a command, which would break the coding causing the forums to stop working.
