Panic attacks.

Does anyone here suffer with them? I've had them on and off for 20 years with the last two years being mostly an off period but tonight I've woke up after about an hour in a full on panic! Heart completely pounding, tingles, crippling fear etc.

I'm quite cross with myself for letting it have a grip on me.

Get help from your GP, panic attacks are not normal and are debilitating.

Don't suffer and beat yourself up for not being able to 'pull yourself together'.

i've been having them on and off for the past few months. hadn't had them since i was 19 years old and split up with someone.

they don't bother me, i'm good at dissociating and can sort of ignore them but it is bothering me they're happening and i've no idea why. i've been through a lot last year and i guess it's to do with that. actually last year i was dealing with things BUT also wasn't being brave and using sex to avoid stuff, now i'm not avoiding things and making progress but it's scary with all the new knowledge i have now. i think that's why for me.

i don't think you can blame yourself for them. they just happen.

I get them occasionally. Less so now that I'm on SSRIs. But if it's not something that affects you often, you can get quick release tablets that you can take when you feel a panic attack coming on. I can't remember what they're called but they worked for me and my step mum swears by them.

I've called an ambulance out twice, thinking I was having a heart attack or stroke, I feel for you, it's a horrible thing, I've learned to cope with it over the years, but it still grips me when I least expect it, even when life is going good, the anxiety and panic take over.

I get annoyed with myself lol, put medications don't really help, talking to other people that suffer, and reading up about it, has helped me the most.

I agree with Kinky. And we're complex animals and need all the compassion from ourselves that we can give. Quite a few here have them, so you're bound to get some posting.

My tips are for good health supporting living - plenty of rest, minimising hassle and unfinished stuff in your life and exercise is a good foundation. Overall, it sounds like you've been doing pretty well in recent years, which is great.

Hope you get a good night's restful sleep tight

Ye I get them to mine started when I was told I had cancer and had to have me leg amputated doc put me on all sorts if meds still get the attacks but sometimes can deal with them lost count how many times called an ambulance got to be regular at one point depression is the biggest problem though me and the Mrs used to go to clubs dogging out doorfun etc but can't do that as she has bad arthritis and has limited movement she don't mind me going on meets as we have our fun when I get back unfortunately not had a meet since me leg came off as no body wonts to play with a one legged guy so abit crap all round really

How are you feeling now River?

There's really good helpful booklets with little tips (although you'll know what works best for you) on the Mind website, if that's of use.

Also WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plans) developed by Mary Ellen Copeland is a really good tool to help you build up understanding and frame of reference for your individual things to do daily, weekly, occasionally to help you, your triggers, useful things for you to do when in crisis, and how to help you get back to normality post-crisis. Really useful to compile a personal one (actually to be honest these are good for *everybody* to do just to be better self-aware for their own wellbeing) to reflect on and hold onto when you need to, and to check if you're incorporating the things in your life that you, personally identified as being useful -- it's a really good reminder when you feel blue when you look at it and go, oh! I'm not doing that thing right now that always help me -- aha!

Anyway, most importantly, hope you get a good restful sleep. Take care.

Very occasionally I do. I often don't realise it is a panic attack until long after and I think back, as I'm so unfamiliar with receiving them. A method of coping I found worked fora few friends who have panic attacks, is to get a big glass of water and tell them to hold it. Their attention is then focused on the glass. It grabs their attention away from the panic, and they need to concentrate on not spilling any so trembling/shakes get back under control, and they regulate their breathing again.

Of course that's just a way of coping with the attack. I'm not as clued up on ways to prevent them happening in the first place :/ hope you feel better soon.

They are vile! I only started 18 months ago and wouldn't wish them on anyone. Mine came with depression but I find the anxiety and panic attacks far more distressing.

I've only ever had one, brought on by serious bullying from my then manager at work when I was 19.

I'd never want to experience that again, as a result I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.....actually I'd watch the fucker burn for what he put me through.

Heart goes out to anyone who suffers from panic attacks

Thank you for your amazing support and tips! I ended up pacing the floor a bit but I managed to regain control.

Got myself to sleep but now, At 6.15am I wish I had longer!

I suffer with anxiety attack same as panic mine Start with no reason I usually feel sick cannot move would crawl to put music on something had one other nite felt like I was choking then tightening then shakes it awful to have
