Vasectomy pros and cons

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I am seriously considering having a vasectomy because as I already have children and I don't wish to have any more whatsoever, I'm feeling the time is right. It's less harmful in the long run than any potential partner pumping hormones and God knows what into their body.

Anyway the question I am asking is what are the pros and cons of having a vasectomy? Having looked online the pros seem pretty self explanatory. Also I've read a lot about reoccurring pain in testicles by men who have had the procedure. According to NHS choice online, 1 in 10 men will experience testicular pain for the rest of their lives after having a vasectomy. Can any guys on here please clear up if this is actually true or not?

Many thanks.

Peaky Nipples

Hubby had it done years ago, and there's always plenty that like to give horror stories

If you're sensible, and rest and take things easy until everything is healed, you're less likely to get any problems

Most horror stories I've heard have been as a result of the guys in question not resting and trying to do too much, too soon

In terms of a procedure, it's like a production line they can do it so quickly

I had it done a few years ago. I drove there and back, but once the pain killers wore off it was quite painful and swollen.

The pain lasted less than a week, sadly the swelling went down but no problems since.

I get the impression I was a little unlucky as a friend had his done by the same surgeon and was up and about with no pain at all the following day.

I'm one of the unlucky ones, I wouldn't call it pain though more a dull ache & only one testie. I've been checked out more than once & there's no other issues there so nowt to be done. I also think they are more sensitive now too, but this could be in my head.

Got myself sorted as H was told a third pregency would have serious life threatening repurcussions for her & like you I didn't want her filling herself with hormone blockers when I could sort it with a simple procedure..I'd make the same choice even if the pain/ache was a 100% certainty.

Hope this helps

I've had mine done a few years and it was pretty swollen at first but after about a week it settled down.

I do occasionally get a dull ache now and again but it certainly isn't what I'd consider agonising or severe pain just more annoying and it usually only lasts a day.

Despite having some minor side effects I don't regret it at all.

Forgot to add, the only effect on our sex life has been occasional accidental squishing of the wrong nut..but we fuck nearly every day so obviously the ache isn't that bad

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds)

Couldn't comment about the statistics... As with any procedure there are risks..

Myself I suffer with a constant ache in my left side, you know the pain bit like you've been kicked in the nuts and the ache afterwards ... If I bump my left nut there's a particular spot that can drop me like a stone, orgasm is painful just like being kicked in my nuts .. I had a week off work followed the instructions .. strangely my left side didn't bruise .....I spoke to the Dr s they reckon I've some scar tissue that's formed and it's touching a nerve ..

Similar reason behind my decision to have the snip maybe 6yrs ago while still married.

Never had any issues or pain beyond the expected post procedure pain while healing .

This is a very good point & I'm probably the male version of the modern "career" woman, didn't want them when younger at all and got the snip when I was 50 (H was 32) After our second was born H was "Never again" due to the complications but I can tell you now despite the "Could prove fatal" health warning if I hadn't had the snip she would be asking now at 36 for another baby. The body clock is a very powerful thing in some women..

Good luck..

I had it done in the morning with no pain whatsoever and although it was a little daunting sat in the waiting room ready to in I was surprised at how quick & simple the hole process was and I was back at work an hour later, not advised but hey I had no issues.

I was a married man at the time and decided that I've got my kids a handsome young man and a beautiful little girl, why would I want or need anymore.

No way - I'm far too much of a baby to do that! I think the colour drained from my face as soon as I lay down. Took me ages to get over the local anaesthetic too, I was wobbling all over the place.

Had it done about 3 years ago. It was worth it for the fun of the drugs alone. I had a whale of a time laying back while the surgeon did his thing and I was flirting with the nurse.

The worst part was the preliminary examination which left me aching for a while.

I still get the occasional pain but they are further and further apart. I had a bit of trouble afterwards maintaining an erection for a few months, some internet viagra seemed to kick start that again though.

Pro; no accidental children produced, now have more freedom to lose the condoms if you know STIs aren't an issue, no chunky slimy bits in your cum.

Cons; your cum will be much runnier, taste different, may have some change in testicle sensitivity or reaccuring aches and soreness. A bit tricky to reverse if you change your mind but easier to do than for a woman. Does take a couple of months to be absolutely sure none of your pesky swimmers are making it through.

Speaking from the perspective of one in LTR with a guy who has had it done what with lacking the essential parts

Everything still tastes the same (sounds naive but I thought he wouldn't be able to cum lol)

You have to have 2 tests to make sure it's defo worked before you can have unprotected sex.

I can't tell you re pain wise although I suspect it's not too bad

If you're with a long term partner I personally think the man should step up & have the snip if the decision has been made not to have kids...

"I am seriously considering having a vasectomy because as I already have children and I don't wish to have any more whatsoever, I'm feeling the time is right. It's less harmful in the long run than any potential partner pumping hormones and God knows what into their body."

Firstly, this is a big thing for a man to undertake (not just physically, but psychologically too), it's a very brave and considerate thing to do for the person you love. My husband had a vasectomy for the same reason ~ so that I didn't have to keep filling my body with artificial hormones ~ and it's possibly the most considerate, selfless thing he's ever done for me.

Like most of the guys have said already, he had a few days of discomfort but as long as you take it easy and let your body recover properly then you shouldn't have any lasting problems.

We both agree that the freedom it gives you in your love making, is well worth it!

Good luck, and well done for considering it in the first place, out of consideration for your partner.

The NHS will agree with you there cos it's cheaper than sterilising a woman.

Had it done. No problem at all. Everything went fine. I embarrassed the 3 young student nurses by encouraging them to get a good look

The only bad thing was having to wear tighty whiteys for a few days - and the itching from where I was shaved. Apart from that...easy. Even drive myself home and was back at work driving within 5 days.

Just make sure any little ones don't run into you by accident

Yup i agree, discomfort was minimal

I had mine done after the mrs had been on the pill for 15yrs, she suffered terrible migraines from them.

After we had two kids and we had no intention of having more, I decided it was my term to do my bit and have never looked back!

And yes well done for contemplating having it done, respect!

Shame we split after 30yrs, but still no regrets and it does make it easier when starting a fresh

I had mine done 5 years ago when I was with my ex, the physical aspects of it for me were just a few days of discomfort.

The long term aspects are more emotional, the finality of it is something that you need to think about. Watching my kids grow up knowing that that's the last time you'll experience 'that' with a child of yours is possibly the hardest aspect to come to terms with

Agreed, and for me it is the one major benefit of our situation, medical for H, age for me, I didn't want another once past 50, I based it on the fact I was a "happy accident" my siblings are 24-22 years older than me, I remember being at school & on open day everyone's parents were in their 30's cept mine who were on their 50's, you do remember these things..Its different now though with lots of couples waiting till they are late 30's into 40's so unlike my parents I'm not the only "old man" at the school gates..
