The peacock owns it..... But there could be a crack in the defence.... Someone's going to get egg on their face over this, worst is that how did the peacock get out and in to the garden? |

Either way, the ownership of the egg has not been established by introducing an egg-laying peahen. All that has been established is a previously undisclosed other bird.

You have taken the 'laying' of the egg to be interpreted as the physical act of producing the egg from the body onto the lawn. The peacock may have rolled the egg onto the lawn and set it there, thereby 'laying' it.
In which case, the egg does not belong to the peacock and possession of the egg leaves ownership with the lawn owner.

I realise that the falling apple should be returned, just as the overhanging branch you lop off needs to be handed over to the owner of the tree. However, the peacock clearly removed the egg to a place where it is not reasonable to assume the peacock's owner could control and expect to get the egg back. It is more akin to picking up the dead pheasant that was run over by a previous car.

(Though I'm more shocked at the thought that a roadkill pheasant is something you'd have experience of in central London. Doesn't the traffic move so slowly it'd just nudge it out of the way?)
