My laptop is dying. Well, it's dead unless I replace the charger which burst into a bright spark this evening. I have a little money saved to replace it (not enough for the spec I want)but still need to access trapped files on the old computer. What to do? |

You can look on ebay for a replacement charger they will be loads cheaper than the original one. Then get a external drive and back upto that |

you need a sata cable. it plugs directly into your hard drive and then into another computers usb socket.
there's 2 sizes of hard drive so make sure you get the right size cable. they're only cheap (less than £4 on ebay) but obviously you wanna get the right one.

Yeah I guess. Just feels like a waste of money as my laptop's on its last legs. |

You could look around for a slightly older model, ex demo or something like that loads of deals to be had. Have a look at the Internet prices. Also some cost more because of the brand when internally they are exactly the same. |

sata cable. it just links hard drives to computers basically and you can take data off the hard drive that way.
if your laptop is working still i'd get a charger for now and save up for the better laptop you want? |

If it does die all is not lost, you can take that drive out of the dead computer and install it in another pc to retrieve the data all you need a sata cable or ide cable depending on what drive it is |

What The Fuck?
A SATA cable doesn't connect to USB, for that you need a sata to usb cable, which assumes that you have the sata and usb power sources sorted out. There are certainly many, many more than two sizes of HARD DRIVE. I challenge you to get a 3TB hard drive for 4 dollars / quid on ebay, or anywhere for that matter.

calm down... if he looked on ebay for 'sata cable' he would find a usb to sata no problem. and they're £2.89, free p&p.
nobody mentioned buying new hard drives, so idk where you got that from. i meant the HD pins, there's 2 sizes of them. |

"Buy a PC instead, I have two now, but can't get ma head round the 7 Pro that I've just bought, so am sticking to ma XP Pro for the time being "
Win 7 was the last of the 'nice' Windows, where you were in charge rather than the computer.
My PC still runs on Win 7, while my laptops run Win 10. |

Big mistake dude. Xp is no longer supported by microshaft anymore. Meaning no new patch updates which leaves your system exposed to hackers with ease. i really wouldn't do anything on Xp if your still running it especially Internet banking etc. Move to Win 7 or Win 10 u need to take the jump sometime. I would recommend win 7 for simplicity first. But that's upto you dude. |

Bloody hell fire man, ma ex bought the XP and it's obviously something that she bought from Noah's garage sale |

I'd fix the lack of cable and get an analysis of your laptop done. Maybe it just needs cleaning up or more RAM to sustain it for a while.
Like others say, second hand refurbished laptops are a good buy for when it needs replacing. |

This! Failing that, it might be worth seeing if you can find an independent, local computer shop. These guys will probably be more than happy to sort you out (probably by using the approach described above) and shouldn't skin you alive. Depends on where you live though, I guess. |

Thanks everyone.
Bought a charger today and saving up for when Black Friday comes. Also, I'm copying over my files to a flash drive. There's so much shit on my laptop that I don't use or haven't looked at in years! |
