No, not that Nobel stuff.
I have never been a fan of his delivery but his songs are wonderful.
Is anyone else more a fan of covers of his songs than the originals? Joan Biez, Eric Clapton, Guns and Roses ... just not Bob? |

Ah you can't say crap delivery, he's don't some fantastic tracks... Hurricane is my favourite but many are great because it's him doing it...
As for covers plenty of them over the years but Hendrix version of all along the watchtower is my personal favourite |

I know he has millions of fans.
I feel a bit left out as I appreciate his songwriting but hate his voice. |

His voice never bothered me in the slightest. If anything, it was as much the voice as it was the songs that initially pulled me in. But then singing to me is always more about how you're delivering the song, the attitude and the soul behind it, than it is the actual vocal tone. Just because a voice is mellifluous, doesn't mean I want to hear it (see X Factor). I can certainly understand how it might not be to some peoples taste though.

I used to prefer covers of his songs for exactly the same reason as the OP but I don't mind so much these days, it's the imperfection that makes his voice stand out from the crowd, and the lyrics are just pure genius. |

I don't think there's anything wrong with his voice when he was in his real purple patch. In fact, he sounds great on albums like Highway 61 Revisited, Bringing it All Back Home and Blonde on Blonde - his voice is an asset on them.
Far better than some soulless X-Factor over-emoting!
I love his words - his book Chronicles is a wonderful read too.

Yes totally, genious song writing, genious guitar playing, I just struggle with his vocals,I think its just a personal thing, that I dont really think he can sing very well, I know millions love him  but yes I do prefer covers of his tunes |

I think Dylan's comment about Leonard Cohen being something like the best lyric-writer speaks volumes. Cohen was a greater loss to music than he was credited for. He should by rights have been a much bigger name. Buckley both helped and nearly destroyed Cohen with his extraordinary cover of Hallelujah! Not sure Dylan quite stands up to either Cohen or Buckley - he's just had a greater output and lived longer! |

I agree that Cohens body of work was comparable, but Buckley? One album and some Morissey covers? I did like Jeff Buckleys album, but I don't think that he really had anything to say, in the same way that the other two did. |

Critics say I mangle my melodies, render my songs unrecognizable. Oh, really? Let me tell you something. I was at a boxing match a few years ago seeing Floyd Mayweather fight a Puerto Rican guy. And the Puerto Rican national anthem, somebody sang it and it was beautiful. It was heartfelt and it was moving.
After that it was time for our national anthem. And a very popular soul-singing sister was chosen to sing. She sang every note -- that exists, and some that don't exist. Talk about mangling a melody. You take a one-syllable word and make it last for 15 minutes? She was doing vocal gymnastics like she was on a trapeze act. But to me it was not funny.
Where were the critics? Mangling lyrics? Mangling a melody? Mangling a treasured song? No, I get the blame. But I don't really think I do that. I just think critics say I do.
Sam Cooke said this when told he had a beautiful voice: He said, "Well that's very kind of you, but voices ought not to be measured by how pretty they are. Instead they matter only if they convince you that they are telling the truth." Think about that the next time you [inaudible]." |

Over ride the crap delivery with a great song some good guitar playing, or vocals, and that is bob dylan generally speaking he likes to roll off the words of his music into verse (If he can) not often but it works for me he is not where he is for nothing and no one to take his place either... |
