Are you into your watches and what's the most you've paid for one

Is it appreciating in value, holding it's own or worth half what you paid for it ?

One of my mates is a watch snob and the other gets his replicas on holiday from the the looky looky man in Tenerife and they are always arguing (in a banter kind of way)

I can really appreciate luxury watches and the craftsmanship that goes into them.

Videos of them being made are really interesting to watch.

But I can also think of much better ways to spend £3000.

I like a smart looking watch but the likes of Rolex I wouldn't thank you for a Rolex, yes I know they are expensive and good quality but they look grotesque. I usually buy fakes from Turkey. I'm sporting a lovely RADO at the moment, gun metal black. £10 in Marmaris 2 years ago hahaha

I collect them, not going to discuss value or what I've spent but like anything if you buy the right ones then you can make money on them.

Personally I'd never buy a fake, if you want one then save up and get the real thing.

When you say Rolex are grotesque, have you seen the explorer? Very plain, steel bravely and black face, understated but a lovely watch.

I have about six I think, from a plastic £10 Bart Simpson one I wear when on my bike to the dress watch, nothing expensive though.

Few years back while waiting for a connecting flight in Dubai airport I wandered into their Gold Souk just to kill some time people watching...

With no intention of making a purchase I found myself the opportunist owner of cut price professional divers watch of a type hard to come-by back here in the UK......

3 weeks later and no longer in Dubai the entire watch face was now spontaneously rotating of its own free will, whilst the pointers remained fixed in a two finger salute too my wayward extravagance ......

I took the watch to a brand franchised jewellers here in blighty who basically said "it's fucked you should return to the place you bought it from",,,...

Been at the back of the sock drawer ever since

I love watches, but seldom wear one now;

Most are heirlooms;

Amongst which are:

A couple of 17th century pair cased pocket watches,

A nice gold half hunter pocket watch, and a matching hunter cased watch

My grandfather's WW1 Rolex officer's half hunter cased wristwatch

My uncle's Longines WW2 RAF Navigator's watch

An omega speedmaster (the type used by Apollo astronauts )

My own Army "G10" watch

And an Apple Watch

Value not important.

I wouldn't buy a watch to appreciate in value.

I'm a watch geek. Love watching worn and wound and going on watchuseek.

Aim is to get an IWC Portuguese.

All the watches I have have been bought second hand ( ahem ) , not as investments, but because I liked them.

As it happens a few of them have become collectable over the years, such a an Omega divers watch and Lemania RAF navigators watch.

Can't beat a quality time piece and pair of shoes. ChronoSwiss Grand Opus, had it 4 years now and according to the jeweller it is climbing in value (probably has something to do with me having to pay each year for a valuation certificate for insurance purposes). Reality is it's probably worth similar to what I paid, but it's irrelevant to me, I love it just as much as the day I bought it and people comment on it a lot. I actually bought one because one of my clients had one and I remarked how beautiful it was. He lent me it for the day and I was sold (not his, new none lol).

I have Omega speedmaster and a Rolex submariner. Both were gifts from clients. But my everyday watch is a stainless steel G shock of which I have two. Got a couple of fashion watches in my drawer a Diesel and a Fossil both nice in their own right.

Ideally I need to get the top two serviced and sold as I have my eye on a nice Panerai.

It was only recently I asked a guy who was putting a new battery into my watch if it was the watch or battery slowing I thought the battery just went (Straight away) he told me the chinese batterys were always the worst and carried on but much slower so I don,t know if its watch or battery the watch is about 20 years old now but has only been in use for about a year its not a quality watch but one I had before Identical lasted about 15 plus years I can,t remember haveing a bad battery in that one trust the chinese to slow things down... Just prise the back of your watch off, check battery number, go to pound shop and buy a card of button cells (making sure yours is on the card) swap out old for new, pop watch back on.

"It was only recently I asked a guy who was putting a new battery into my watch if it was the watch or battery slowing I thought the battery just went (Straight away) he told me the chinese batterys were always the worst and carried on but much slower so I don,t know if its watch or battery the watch is about 20 years old now but has only been in use for about a year its not a quality watch but one I had before Identical lasted about 15 plus years I can,t remember haveing a bad battery in that one trust the chinese to slow things down... (which is probabily the opposite in real life) with lower grade batterys but cost the same price as a higher grade one.. the Indian guy who put my battery in knew his batterys and knew if they were chinese or not I presume its a matter of going back to him getting a higher grade battery and seeing if the watch has had its time pardon the pun or just get a new watch and save on a new battery.. oh the dilemma..

Just prise the back of your watch off, check battery number, go to pound shop and buy a card of button cells (making sure yours is on the card) swap out old for new, pop watch back on.

Saved you £4.Only just saw your reply.. would they not be chinese batterys even chinese batterys before lasted longer than a couple of months I think it must be the watch.. thanks for your reply"

Well if it only lasts six months so what?

Pull another off your pound shop card and put that one in.

Everything is made in china these days so don't pay a fiver for something you can do yourself,
