Maybe more relevant to our Scottish friends?
What do you think of the idea?
Also the Scottish Whiskey industry is considering a high court challenge to to decision to have a 50p/unit minimum price. This would mean a bottle of whiskey costing a minimum £14.
Given that even a half decent bottle costs significantly more than this. Or that any that costs near this kind of price would be blended mouthwash.....would it make any difference? |

Alcohol problems seem to come from abuse of cheap lagers ciders and tonic wine in Scotland most of the would only increase in cost 10-15% spirits would increase 40% or more . As happened with cigarettes it will start folk bring in cheap from abroad and worse increase the demand for fake spirits some which have been found to cause serious health problems with eye sight . It would not make a lot of difference to me even buying a round in a pub wouldn't increase that much as I don't drink . |

A litre of Smirnoff vodka up here can range from £18 to £22 . Has it stopped people drinking NOPE.
The big change you do see is the specials where you could buy 3 cases of cider or beer for £20 has now ceased.
I seen Strongbow yesterday 16 cans for £22. I bet you can get the same amount down south for about £12 to £15.
I like my ales anyway and vodka. So if I'm having a weekend behind closed doors then 20 ales at £25 or a litre of vodka at £20 is still fairly cheap in my book. |

I don't drink alcohol but I do object to minimum pricing ....
The notion responsible drinkers should be penalised as part of initiative aimed too deter those who abuse alcohol is unfair and does little or nothing to tackle the root cause ...
We live in a society that increasing punishes the masses for the indiscretions of the few...

It means the cheap whiskey makers will go out of business.... Makes you wonder which companies are lobbying(paying) for this legislation |

I just think of it as an attack on the poorer sections of society. Its not going to make any difference for those who are living on a half decent salary. |

I thought they just did, and they lost.
Having been confirmed by the courts, I can see it coming into force here in England too. Just so long as they don't tax deep-fried Mars bars, there'd be rioting if they tried that 
(they have to find something to replace lost revenue from all the smokers & more fuel-efficient vehicles  )

Minimum price on alcohol will do two things;
1. Increase contraband booze ( eg fake vodka with ethanol)
2. Increase drug use.
I once asked a guy who had been done for drugs, why he had used. He said he wanted to get smashed.
"Why not just go and get pissed then?"
"Drugs are cheaper and quicker ". |

I think taking alcohol licenses away from supermarkets, and bringing back better regulated off licences would make a bigger difference. It's too convenient just now to grab a 6 pack as you walk past. If they had to go to another shop after to get their beer i think it would drop.
Drinking at home has increased massively in the last ten years, and a lot of people really don't realise just how much they are drinking.
Supermarkets sell alcohol at a loss to get punters in the door, and pubs just can't compete.
Remember everyone complained about the smoking ban, myself included.
I much prefer it now when i can have a night out and not go home reeking of smoke. |

I know alcoholics who reduce their food bill to afford drink. And lose their homes. And their families.
Making things more expensive doesn't help people overcome addiction, so what is the point of raising the price? |

There's a couple who live in the same block as me that I have bought stuff off (curtains, a vacuum cleaner, joint of beef) on more than 1 occasion, cos they had spent all their money on drugs and had run out of electric  |
