Patches, nicotine gum, forays etc don't work;
All they do is to replace the smoked nicotine with another route; so you remain hooked on nicotine. They will never stop the addiction.
There is only one way;
Just stop.
Dead.
Cold turkey.
It's dreadful for about 10 days; then gets easier
