No one ever thinks that they're in the clique, it's like terrorist cells, as a whole it's daunting but when you break it down there's just little groups of friends

I struggle to understand why some people are in denial about there being cliques in the forum. There are cliques in all walks of life, they just differ from Internet to real life; in real life is just a group of friends who probably see each other regularly. On the internet it's a group of people who may or may not have met, but tend to do anything to upset someone else within the clique, or others within the clique know it's just a joke.
If you go in the chat rooms you will see there is a clique in every single room, a bunch of people that go on regularly and have got to know one another, but probably only met a few times, if ever.
That's my definition of cliques anyway. I just think people don't like the term. |

Thankfully I'm not in the forums long enough to be sucked in to the "clique", you can hear them in the corner sometimes "come to us, come to us", quite creepy really.

In cultural studies there are theories of cultural exchange such as appropriation and inclusion. If we accept the argument that there is indeed a clique, then we can assume they are like the cultural mainstream. The counterculture would then be the anti-clique.
Let's take this thread as one of the many examples of anti-clique literature. Well, if we look closely enough we can see examples within this thread of both appropriation (people in the clique claiming to not be in the clique, thereby claiming to be a part of the counterculture) and inclusion (introducing members of the counterculture to the mainstream, in this instance by offering cake). Both appropriation and inclusion are well known ways of incorporating counterculture into the mainstream.
What I'm basically saying is, welcome to the clique, OP. |
