Here and there |
Hello everyone
I am just curious to know peoples opinions here. In my experience I have found that people feel it is okay, and quite light hearted to make remarks about someones height (being short). However when it comes to someones weight, that becomes much more serious and is generally more frowned upon.
Personally I don't believe it is acceptable to make someone feel inadequate in any way (particularly in this day and age!). However due to height not being something you can change, why is this not seen as being slightly worse? I mean if I was overweight at least I would have the option to change this.
What are your thoughts on this?
Do you agree that society generally frowns upon remarks about someones weight, and less so about height?
If so, why do you think this is the case?
For the record I welcome a bit of banter, especially between friends, so am not touchy about this myself (being only 5ft 6!).. I am just curious to know people thoughts. |

I suspect that if you genuinely want to know the answer you're almost certainly best off looking at resources outside of fabs. You might want to look at websites that talk about intersectionality and fat phobia, as well as intersectional feminist websites for some strong arguments about why this kind of language is problematic.

Society have a great logic for tall girls tbh just as much as weight. I'm 5'11 in height and always get the "God you're so damn tall" like girls are meant to be short and not tall... I believe height or weight is just one of them isn't it? Its what makes a person them and we should all be able to be comfortable in our own skins without judgement |

Lots of people dont like short men but i think there are more people who hate fat women, men too but more so women.
I think its ok to take the piss out of either in a light hearted way, not being nasty. Its like some people who have big chins get called brucey and people with big noses get called concorde, you can usualy find something wrong with most people. |

"I'm tall and fat. The general public remind me about my excessive height and the GP reminds me about my excessive weight. Job done "
Funnily enough my GP never mentions my weight when I see them... |

Mine does. I could go in with a broken nose and it'll be because I'm overweight still, I take it on the (double) chin. |

You've only been here three weeks so not witnessed the nasty fat threads. You'll see profiles stating no oompah loompahs, no salad dodgers, we only meet people who look after themselves and many variations along the same lines.
People join sites like this for fantasy. I prefer men tall: over six foot, buff and submissive. My other half is tall and buff but can't pronounce submissive. He likes tall and thin I'm short and fat...go figure, cupid has a sense of humour!
Can't say I've noticed derogatory remarks about height. Threads like these are generally started by people with issues unable to accept they're not everyone's cup of tea: not saying that's you op, just a general observation.

You both actually have a very attractive body for my taste: tall and with some curves to grab. Who's not overweight these days?
I'm also a bit fat and got some belly. Fortunately my GP doesn't make any opinion about it
Too bad you are both a bit far from me, otherwise...

It'd be much easier if no one felt it appropriate to comment on anyone's appearance. If people realised the world would be a very boring place if we all looked the same.
However, many people are massive dicks who just can't help themselves.

Saying things like "who is not overweight these days" is a bit unhelpful really- say it again in a few years when the overweight people (myself included) have all died of weight related illness- much better!!
Society always picks on somebody- whether it Ginger, less able, different religion, height, sex.
OP, find a way to deal with it, is my best advice. |

I went the doctors and he said for my height I'm over weight. I'm not over weight I'm too short. I looked it up and for the weight I am I should be 17ft 3inches |

said it yourself, light hearted remarks about height. but when it comes to fat usually people are having a dig.
i personally have been obese and couldn't get out the house coz i could hardly move so can understand why fat isn't really something to aspire to, but i also understand it can be really easy to get fat.
took me 4 months to get down to 13 stone by starving myself, as soon as i started eating again i went up to 14 stone in 2 weeks, took me another 3 years to lose 3 stone. and that only happened because i now care about myself and have been unconditionally loved. if people had slagged me off for being fat i might not have felt so motivated. and that is one reason why not to slag people off for who they are but also like someone else has said, it's not really appropriate to slag people off for their appearance.
i think it's also not appropriate for the light hearted comments about the height if that also makes you feel bad about yourself for them.
i'm thinking when people tease sometimes they do it because you stand out for what you are but they arent being mean intentionally. whereas with fat people it's been completely acceptable for decades to humiliate them for it. |

"No-one died of being to short. "
Didn't the tallest man in the world have a shorter than expected life because of his height?
Dwarfism has similar health issues ?
Down to earth! |

People may state a preference for height but aren't necessarily hostile to short people. But there is a lot more perceived hostility towards fat people, so people are more likely to respond to that hostility, understandably. |

Also no-one is perceived to have self-inflicted shortness, but there is a frequent assumption of self-inflicted obesity, so people can 'blame' and despise people for that more easily. |

I just believe in giving other people respect at all times - and this includes not ripping into them, whether about their height, weight or other attributes. I just don't need to make myself feel better in some way, by demeaning others, whether I'm feeling great or not. Taking personal responsibility for our actions is something that's diminished in recent years by a fair amount - and too much, in my opinion. |

"Sometimes people block you for being under 6ft
Some block you for been athleticly built (proper atheltic not body building atheltic), point been? "
You would have to ask them, am sure they would have a valid reason |

It's never ok to make personal remarks of a derogatory nature and dressing it up as banter makes it worse because it makes it more difficult for the target to object.
I have "friends" who've called me "skinny cow" or "brainy cow" (it's all relative) who would cry foul if I called them "fat cow" or "thick cow" it's not banter it's just rude. |

Only most women are flattered to be called a skinny or brainy cow though arent they, its hardly an insult as most women would like to be skinny and brainy. |

Not this woman, I don't like being called a cow whatever people put in front of it. |

It is easier to criticise than to compliment, to criticise someone shows power over someone, to compliment is a sign of weakness. This is only my perception. |

Not sure i get that bit about complimenting people as being a sign of weakness. Im more likely to be critical of someone if they are of me or i dont like them. I only compliment someone if i really mean it not just to be nice.
My son takes the piss out of me but not in a nasty way and nearly every time he does it he makes me laugh.
Just say if you meet someone and they say or do something to annoy you then you think to yourself silly little person must have little man syndrome but you wouldnt say it to them. |
