"Offensive is in the intent. "

Actually it's much like harrasment, nothing to do with the intent but how it is perceived by the other person

You can harrass someone but not intend it just the same as offending

Unless of course you're implying the person intended to offend ?

I always say stuff and don't mean to offend, but it could be offensive if the person was easily offended. It's normally the way I word things. Luckily the people I associate with have a sense of humour and know this.

Central

I think saying things that are without respect for others and that are reasonably likely to upset, degrade or be abusive to them, could be deemed offensive.

Having an unusual opinion that you express, except where it's similar to the above, is fine, in general terms. But the devil's in the detail - as with many things.

If someone finds themselves causing others to express their offended sensibilities, then it's likely that they could increase their introspection to good effect. I think you'll be fine Evie

Of course. But I don't think the two are that easily separated. One usually comes from the other. Context is everything.

Well if that's the case why not just start a "the worlds a disaster because of all these fatties" thread ?

Would be much easier and clearer on the moral of the story rather than get into a narrative about an individual and specific observations

Very misleading

Some people say something they know will offend.

Some seem to enjoy trying to offend people.

Some are oblivious as to how their words may offend.

You can tell, mostly, by how someone writes something, or says it, whether the intent is there.

I am not that man,but I know a man that can!

That sounds like a hit

Think it was a hit in the sixties by the group., Stan Milan and his Tin Can Tram

They later did a cover version of the Sweet number one, wigwam bam

That kind of hit is allowed the rest causes offense.

Ah yes!

But are you offended because it's offensive?, or because it's offensive to be offended by a third party offence, obviously intended to offend the offensive offender?? "

I said it causes offense, not that I was offended....no offense intended if you meant to offend and I have unknowingly upended your intent to be rude but am gladly letting that slide as I am not a prude who is easily offended by those causing offense, answer me this...is that an offence?

No-one will offend me on here, or the web in general. I just won't allow it to happen. That comes from many years on the site, in chat, attending socials and the forums. There was a time it would but I have learned to see it for what it really is, just words on a screen.

That works for me.

But I can see hurt displayed nearly every day on here from both genders, all sexualities and sizes.

I can accept that strangers can say something offensive as I understand that was their intention.

But insults have to be damn creative for it to register.

I try not to insult or be 'offensive online' I don't know you well enough, it's just friendly banter. You have to be over 18 on here, act like an adult and get over it!

Offensive on here in particular is all about the delivery, context & intent.

An opening post with such a sweeping generalisation will always take a turn for the worse & that to me is where the intent comes into play.

I don't think being sensitive is a bad thing though. Although these days it's seen as an incredibly undesirable characteristic. And I'm not totally sure why that is?

There seems to be two types of offending.

First is when someone's offended and the offender apologises or tried to see it from the point of _iew of the offendee (if that's a word?).

The second is when the offender gets all defensive and says "Oh TRIGGERED!" Or "Get over it, its words on a screen". Or "Everyone gets offended these days, grow up."

Or something.

I see it like accidentally bumping into someone in Tesco. Do you say "Oh sorry" or "Get over it"?

I think you can still hold an opinion whilst saying "I didn't mean to upset you". I think that's valid?

Being offended is subjective. It has everything to do with you as an individual or a collective, or a group or a society or a community. Your moral conditioning, your religious beliefs. What offends me may not offend you.

“I want to live in a democracy but I never want to be offended again.” Well you’re an idiot.

This is how I think. It's something else when I see somebody throw sissy fits here because the don't like something that's been said to them.

And if it is 'offensive'. Then I think that's time to think your winning the argument. Time to smile.

These threads are becoming very counter productive anyway.

Maybe that offends in a passive constructive way.

Very few people object to someone offering an alternative _iew but still maintaining respect for the person they are disagreeing with. This is not offensive. However, I feel not all opinions are expressed in a respectful manner. And some aren't even opinions, more just inflammatory remarks designed to belittle or be dismissive, yet when challenged are justified as an opinion. It's the way something is said that makes it offensive.

'im offended by your offensive fence',he said

'well you better watch out ',his neighbour replied,'as a fencer i have access to pointy swords'

,oh yeah ''replied the man, 'as a fencer i know that your offensive fence offended the fencing officer, causing offense to the fencing community in general

And what the bloody hell is that enormous boat doing there?'

'well im offended by your offending offence to my fence ',said the first man,'and your upsetting all the animals '

Having an unusual opinion that you express, except where it's similar to the above, is fine, in general terms. But the devil's in the detail - as with many things.

I got to my broken nail was offensive the other day.... I am fairly sure they were joking though

What does the word offensive mean to you? "

its the internet op it full of it as anyone who's been on line for any length of time will tell you.

if someone comes at me online I stand my ground have my say and then walk away because ultimately I don't care what some random stranger thinks of me on the internet .

the reason I stand and have my say is two fold one I'm a passionate guy in the real world who would stand his ground against unwarranted abuse thrown my way so online I behave in much the same way .

secondly I don't stand my ground because I care about the other persons opinion online .I stand my ground purely to show I'm no ones door mat and I can not be bullied or belittle into shutting up .

both of these ways of being are the same on line or off line to me in fact I would say I'm milder on line over such stuff than I am in the real world for the simply reason its just on line it means fuck all in the grand scheme of my life .

where as sometimes things off line can effect my life hence me being not as mild with those I feel maybe trying to mess with my life or my vibe in the real world.

"I dont get offended.

People get offended far too easily and then there's the delicate little souls who get offended on behalf of everyone, how they manage to get through each day I'll never know. It must be hard work being permanently offended "

Yep, that's me I'm afraid (but fortunately I'm not permanently offended, so I'm a happy soul most of the time)

"Where's Noah Fence?

Taking a fence somewhere

Just to clarify, that was a play on words kind of thing rather than saying he's taking offence.

*watches the tumble*

Ok glad I've clarified "

*rides in on a big ball of tumble*

I only just realised what his name means, doh!! I'm such a knobhead.

"Seems to be offensive to say something is offensive these days lol

I got to my broken nail was offensive the other day.... I am fairly sure they were joking though

What does the word offensive mean to you?

its the internet op it full of it as anyone who's been on line for any length of time will tell you.

if someone comes at me online I stand my ground have my say and then walk away because ultimately I don't care what some random stranger thinks of me on the internet .

the reason I stand and have my say is two fold one I'm a passionate guy in the real world who would stand his ground against unwarranted abuse thrown my way so online I behave in much the same way .

secondly I don't stand my ground because I care about the other persons opinion online .I stand my ground purely to show I'm no ones door mat and I can not be bullied or belittle into shutting up .

both of these ways of being are the same on line or off line to me in fact I would say I'm milder on line over such stuff than I am in the real world for the simply reason its just on line it means fuck all in the grand scheme of my life .

where as sometimes things off line can effect my life hence me being not as mild with those I feel maybe trying to mess with my life or my vibe in the real world. "

Great point. It's all very well to say 'I don't get offended, people are too sensitive these days'

But if people are always going out of their way to offend online, how does that affect them in real life?

I have a work colleague who has recently been making fun of another colleague who's autistic, and it's his autistic behaviour that the other colleague finds hilarious.

This has annoyed me on so many levels.

Does this make me a precious little snowflake?

You see, I don't see them as delicate. I see them basically as shit-stirers.
