It depends on the quality of the recording setting and the length of the song. But, a better answer that gives you a rough idea is that a 2GB mp3 player will hold 68 hours of music, or approximately 1,300 songs at 3 minutes a song.
I like to say instead 1000 songs on a 2GB player since some will run longer, some way longer. That translates to 2000 songs on a 4GB player, 500 on a 1GB player, and 250 on a 512MB one. But read your manual, new technology will lead to eventual changes in storage methods and volume.
Well, after personal real world experience and research, I have to say that separate songs generally take about 5 megabytes, with part of the memory probably taken up with spacing and digital cataloging. So, unfortunately, that will lower the the amount of individual songs to somewhere around 500.

Thankyou people, i remembered to google and it said 500 songs. Ive never had an ipod and thinking of getting one. The 4gb looks suitable for me as i dont want anything to fancy just to play music onxx |

"most mobile phones will store and play music. Maybe a cheaper option than an ipod?"
Thankyou, apparently my mobile phone does, its a pretty swish one for me. But it remains a mystery to me how to get music onto it |

On my ipod i have 1563 songs, with art work, and it takes up 6.58 gb. So you should get at least 500 songs on 2 gb.
Please remember if you get an ipod you must download itunes and synchronise your ipod with itunes to get music onto the ipod. It’s simple enough when you get used to it but can be a little daunting to start with. You just drag and drop music into the itunes library then sync it with the ipod.
You may consider getting an mp 3 player (ie. not ipod) and its just a case of dragging music into the mp3 player – a bit easier than ipod.
As someone else suggested you could use your phone as an mp3 player (as I usually do nowadays) but you may have to buy a small card to expand the memory in the phone and it’s the same as an mp3 player – you just drag and drop music into it. The advantage of this is that its only 1 thing to carry instead of a phone and mp3 player.

If the docking station has a compatible input socket you can get a lead that plugs into phone and the station and it will play. |

My phone has stereo speakers built in for you to play the music through. But agree always make sure you've got your charger with you if you take it away. If using it in a hotel room I always have the phone plugged in |
