Stimulating films?

Recently watched Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac films, which I loved -- it made me think of the films that I've seen which were part of my sexual awakening or fed my erotic cravings. I recall watching Les Valseuses alone as a teen and being thoroughly turned on by what was happening. The Secretary stirred me, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Bound, The Reader, Mulholland Drive, Shame, Y Tu Mamá También and many more. And those I've not yet seen but know I want to such as Betty Blue, The Piano Teacher, Malèna and Blue is the Warmest Colour, just to name a few.

So which are your go-to erotic, visually sumptuous, or indulgently sexy films? And which others would you recommend?

Fantastic list.

It's always been just Secretary. No idea where the the keeps coming from?

Basic Instinct (92) was a favourite of my youth. I also found a great deal of pleasure from Cronenberg's Crash (96) but I'm kinky and get turned on by James Spader.

A few years ago it was the uncut version of Caligula. Best mainstream films I've watched recently are Hymphomaniac, like you said or 9 songs.

That's it! My friend recommended this one! Although whenever I see Jenny Agutter, I think of The Railway Children and the scene at the end 'Oh Daddy, my Daddy!' - which I suppose could still work!!

9 Songs is the one where they go to gigs and the actors had 'real' sex? Yup, I'd like to see that one, I think it starred the guy who played the son in Cracker - who I had a thing for!! Right on the list with that!

Must watch Caligula. Who doesn't need a Roman orgy in their lives?

Some excellent films there OP - I'd also add in Von Trier's The Idiots and Breaking the Waves which have some bizarre but fascinating sexual content.

Also agree with 9 Songs and would add My Beautiful Luanderette.

The film which truly saw in my own sexual awakening was Betty Blue

Emanuelle. For me it was erotic because it wasn't just porn, there was a bit of a story line and to my mind erotica is about what you don't see as much as what you do see.

Having said that, I do have the boxed set of Confessions films.

Erotica and soft core can be far more stimulating than hard core.

Channel 4 and Channel 5 used to have some good erotic stuff in the early days, often from France or Italy with badly dubbed voices (but that didn't matter as I had the volume turned down anyway).

Oh I will certainly add those then. My Beautiful Launderette! How could I forget this? Love it. And love Daniel Day Lewis.

And talking of DDL, reminds me - A Room With A View - is one on my list too, for its repressed sexuality and the awakening of Lucy Honeychurch (I also had a thing for Helena Bonham Carter!)

Nymphomaniac was extremely UNSEXY must say, but we do sympathise with the character's motivation:

"Perhaps the only difference between me and other people was that I've always demanded more from the sunset; more spectacular colors when the sun hit the horizon. That's perhaps my only sin."

Secretary and y tu mamá tambien, very naughty films.

Giving teasing flashes. Then starts to play with herself in front of him while he can't move......

Secretary ticks all my boxes. The Duke of Burgundy is both immensely sexy and sad. I seem to remember having flutterings over a kiss in Last of the Mohicans many, many moons ago. My love for James Spader started with Sex, Lies and Videotape. And the Shakespeare Retold version of Taming of the Shrew with Rufus Sewell as Petruchio? Good lordy lord, that was sexy.

There are a few that were part of my sexual awakening...mostly shown late at night on BBC2 back in the late 70's when I'd sit with the volume down low and my finger poised on the off switch of the black and white portable I had in my bedroom (was the days before remotes)....they were mostly French or German with subtitles....the only one that I recall the name of was Belle De Jour...

...another I remember seeing at a young age that had a profound effect on me was Women In Love...the one with the famous Alan Bates/Oliver Reed naked wrestling scene amongst other things
