Just seen there is a need for newborns to be signed up for it and it made me think about when my child was at that age..
Would more people sign up to it if there was a system in place along the lines of 'If your not prepared to donate organs, you will not be offered them if needed'
Bet that would make people think |

one of my sisters is jehovah so can't accept organs, not sure if she's a donor though (or if she can be). but if she can i bet she will donate.
i suppose if you're against donating organs then you wouldn't accept them either?
also i'm dabetic, i can't donate organs but i could accept them, and am more likely to need them. |

Saving a life after loosing one is such a great feeling, knowing that out of your own missery you have possibly saved multiple lifes and familys from certain heart ache |

I also like the opt out system. Me and my kids are all on the donor list and though it would be a really difficult time I think that if I was in that situation and could give another family the gift of life I would do. |

"I think the opt out system is good, so you're automatically in, unless you choose not to be.
Id prefer that system too.
"
Me too. It still means that people with strong views about it can opt out, but forces those who might otherwise be undecided to consider it. |

I lost my son when he was 20 month old, I donated his organs because to me it was the right thing to do, for me his life made no sense if he just rotted in the ground at least this way a bit of him lived on, they could only use his heart and liver as his condition that took his life men other organs were not suitable for use but I though even if we could save just two other families going through what we were going through surely that can only be a good thing
Do I believe if you don't give you don't get?
Not where children are involved no
Why should a child be left to die because it's parents wouldn't do the same for somebody else |

"They can have every part of my body as it could quite well lead to ground breaking discoveries cures etc etc plus saving multiple lives "
They can do what they want with me when I'm dead, its not going to affect me is it |

I know soon after his birth I was going to loose him, they told me he wouldn't make his 5th birthday so I was prepared, it was something I'd given a lot of though to before he died
Maybe if his death had been sudden I wouldn't have felt the same
I'm not saying it hurts any less if you know deaths coming but it gives you time to think about things and make plans
And organ donation was something I'd already given though about and decided on in advance |

No, it is a personal choice, plus there are some people who can't choose to opt in, they maybe fine when first born, but what when they are older? I'd love to give blood, as I received in while in hospital years ago, but because that was before the screening of blood, I cannot now give it, it's the same for organ donating. shame really as I have quite a rare blood type |

"I was gonna leave my body to medical science or the necrophiliac society.
doesnt that cost a lot of money? "
Don't know about the necrophiliac society but it doesn't cost anything to leave your body to medical science, just have your request written down and witnessed by your next of kik. Upon your death they'll quickly stick a tube in your side and fill you up with methenol and formaldehyde to preserve your flesh and your organs then you'll be put in a freezer like a choc ice and surgeons and medical students with use your body to perfect operations and just basically learn how to be doctors and surgeons. I think that's quite a good thing to do, although I'd want my body to go back to my family after they've finished with it, think they keep it for 2 or 3 years. |

No I don't think that's a good idea at all, it would be very unfair to say " we have an organ but you can't have it because you are not signed up to donate, so cherrio of you go to die"

As the system stands at the moment I agree because a lot of people are no donors not because they have chosen not to be but because it's just something they have never thought about
However if it was an opt out system where everybody who was not a donor had made the conscious desission and effort to take themselves off the list because they didn't want anybody having their organs after they die does it seem right they should be allowed to receive and have the gift of life when they are not willing to do that for somebody else |

Should be automatic;
I suppose an opt out could be allowed for personal reasons;
I would like to think I was of some use to someone after I croak. They can harvest whatever is worthwhile from me if its of use.
One if my very best freinds lost her 15 year old son in an accident;
She had no hesitation in donating her son's organs; she draws massive comfort from the fact that someone else is alive, because of her son.

The most important thing is to make it known to your next of kin what your wishes are.
It doesn't matter whether you are a registered organ donor or not, you don't make the decision your next of kin do.
I know it might seem morbid but you need to talk about this kind of stuff while you are able to.
My whole family know my wishes and I know theirs. |

Correct. It is a good thing to do, but I think people have rather grand visions of what leaving your body to "medical science" is about.
Believe me when I say that you had to think twice about attending a University party hosted by medics.
And while the body parts are supposed to be reunited and disposed of together, it is not always easy to match them up again. |

This rule really annoys me! It's my body I can choose what happens to it. Why the fuck should next of kin get a say in it?
Boils my piss it does. |

I'm an organ donor. I don't really care what happens to me when I die so I might as well help people who need it.
I think the system should be an opt-out system and that next of kin shouldn't have a say that supersedes my own. |
