After reading the other thread which points out how rare it is to see white dog poo these days, I had to Google it....
The disappearance of white dog poo is down to what dogs eat these days.
White shit is the calcium left behind as the water evaporates, and the 'organic' components of the crap are consumed (in various ways) leaving the inorganic stuff behind.
Historically, before BSE came along, butchers used to dish out bones for dogs to munch on.
But nowadays dogs don't eat as much bone as they used to, including bone meal. This all got the lid shoved on it due to the BSE crisis. Also, tighter regulation on dogs crapping on pavements means that turds don't hang around for years in public places like they used to, giving them less opportunity to dry out and turn white.
So there you go and now we know!

Reminds me of when my first husband spotted a dog turf with sweet corn in and came out with "look slip slop" whenever I see sweet corn I,m reminded of that turf.

Yes, the ingredient in dog food causing white poo was bone meal (basically powdered bones).
Yes, there's the risk of splinters from full bones.
Bone meal is out of fashion for it's BSE connections etc and full bones are out of fashion for the BSE and splinters reasons!! |

Bone only splinters when it's been cooked, as cooking weakens it.
Many dog owners and breeders, start their dogs/puppies on the BARF (Bones And Raw Food) diet which includes, chicken wings, chicken necks, raw chicken, raw mince, eggs in the diet.
It's the most natural way for feeding a dog, but dogs are omnivores, and will also eat vegetables, and some fruits too. Not like cats that are true carnivores.
If feeding BARF you still need to add in some vitamin/mineral powder as the meat and bone doesn't contain everything.
My dog is fed a kibble, but occasionally gets a butcher bone, either a beef rib, so she can gnaw the meat off, or a marrow bone, with meat and marrow inside. |

Only pre cooked bones, natural to altered un cooked bones are fine |
