I am an autumn girl, the faint tang of woodsmoke, the changing colours of the leaves, the hedgerows laden with hips and berries, the sharpness of the morning air and being able to see your own breath, the snuggling in comfy, chunky knitwear (swoon), the autumnal colour palette echoed in smart, woollen, long coats, and the warm, filling, comfort food.
I am also a gin girl. And making homemade sloe gin is the perfect way to appease my autumnal and gin cravings in one fell swoop.
Have you ever foraged for sloes, made your own gin (or similar), or is there a particular aspect of autumn (or fall) that tickles you?
Also, let me know if you would like a bottle of the homemade sloe gin! |

I have made many an alcoholic beverage. I love sloe gin, damson gin, elderflower wine (although that season has come to an end). At my grandparents there are large plum and apple trees and I remember many happy childhoods making plum jam and chutneys and running around the grounds with the dogs. This year I am slacking but am going to attempt blackberry jam soon. |

Yes! I need to get my maslin pan back out and get jam making. Oooh loads of ideas for seasonal chutneys and pickledy things to go with cheese, anything to feed my cheese and gin habits. Country dog walks and kicking leaves about. Ahhh me. |

i am always hunting for sloes when im out, all i keep seeing is blackthorn berries what type of shrub or tree is a sloe i mean what do the leaves look like how many to a stem how they configured, opposite or alternate and staggered, whats the bark colour texture ? hard to find |

Ok something I know about!! Sloes picked and in freezer as not had first frost yet. Sloe gin is good but also I do a Sloe port which is mega! Throw a few blackberries in just to be a rebel! |

Yes! It's much sweeter than gin gin, all the sugar that gets added, but it's the alcoholic equivalent of Ribena - but better.

Autumn is great and unfortunately gin ain't my favourite taste but there is a new cider out which I like a lot and it's for all round really it's called " slippy tin" cider it's always a must from me ?????? |

Autumn is also one of my favourite times of year. The changing colours and the cold nip in the air suits me more than the hot sun.
I have made sloe gin for many years and start it in time to drink for Xmas. Have you tried cloves in with the sloes? You will never go back to standard sloe gin again
I have also tried sloe sherry but nowhere near as nice. |

Autumn and Spring guy here. I like getting wrapped up and heading for a walk - there are a few parks and gardens fairly close so nice to walk round them.
I like the fresher air too, then heading into Spring how the flowers start to bloom.
I will admit, I'm not much of a drinker these days (I like driving so best not to drink). |

That's a good thumbs up then! The sweet berry tastes of these types of drink always remind me of the scene in Anne of Green Gables when Anne gets her friend, Diana, d*unk on currant wine which was mistaken for raspberry cordial.

Yes, I make it ready for Christmas too -- but no, never tried adding cloves. I'll definitely do that with at least one batch, sounds like it could be really nice -- and very good for toothache! |

Yes! Building up the stock is important. I like to get beautiful bottles to put it in, and make special labels. Really very nerdy.
Can you bake your own bread? I can't quite get it to work properly. Think I may just have to invest in a breadmaker. |

Yeah I bought vodka and added juniper berries. Ta da, gin. If you steep them first with licorice and cloves it tastes different.

Very true. There's other Autumn clothes we're digging out. I'm digging out my leather jacket too, love the weight of it. Might integrate it into a photo shoot later |

I pick sloes where I work, hundreds of the Damn things growing across the island.
Good thing about sloe gin is mixing it with southern comfort, galliano, vodka and orange juice with some ice..
Probably not a drink you'd associate with winter.. Gluveine is the my winter drink but that's more so apres ski...
But I do enjoy a good slow comfortable screw against the wall. |

Probably not a drink you'd associate with winter.. Gluveine is the my winter drink but that's more so apres ski...

Prick the sloes with a needle, or you can pop in the freezer first to simulate the first frost (it makes them split) - you want them to be able to infuse the gin. Pop in a bottle about halfway up, and top up rest of the bottle with gin. Some people say get cheap gin, but I think if you make with a good gin you can genuinely taste the difference. Add sugar -= caster sugar, I use golden caster sugar -- about two heaped spoons, maybe three (!) and shake it all up.
Store in a cupboard (out of the sun) and shake it every other day. Can be useful to sometimes pop the bottle on its side to store, not just standing upright. The longer you can leave it the better but at least two months -- so make now ready for an excellent batch for Christmas! |

I,ve made sloe gin once turns a slight pink when ready, plus recently some green tomato chutney, auturm is or can be a lovely season if dry outdoors, I give my yew tree a back and sides today a self setter but moved it from a tub into the ground a few years back about 15 years old now. |

Autumn is my favourite time of year, the log burner is lit, the sloe gin was made today and the conkers have been gathered to keep the spiders out....oh and I've knitted a gorgeous purple hat to keep me warm and now I'm onto giant knitting a blanket for snuggling |

Got sloe & damson gin and vodka and add to it every year, like mine to be a few years old. Love soups and fresh bread this time of year too
Yes! Building up the stock is important. I like to get beautiful bottles to put it in, and make special labels. Really very nerdy.
Can you bake your own bread? I can't quite get it to work properly. Think I may just have to invest in a breadmaker. "

You should also try dishwasher infused vodka..
I normally make several bottles for the winter period and keep them in the freezer.
Werthers and chocolate toffee are my favourite, but any sweets work..
Take a 3/4 full bottle of vodka, grind of smash your sweet of choice and fill the bottle.
Lid on tight and put in the dishwasher on the longest cycle (might need a couple of goes the dissolve sweets completely).
Leave for a couple of weeks then strain through a paper filter to get any little bits out..
Et voila.. Flavoured vodka.
The chocolate toffee is really good, creamy like baileys but with more of a kick. |

I couldn't agree more vis-a-vis the sloe gin. As a child I would pick, wash and prick (with a thorn) sloes for my grandfather who would pay me a penny for 10!
Later this month I will be in Buckingham picking sloes for the next batch of gin. I have already decanted some of last year's produce. It really does look beautiful in a decanter on the mantelpiece. As does last year's damson gin!
If you are able, I would recommend leaving the gin steeping for 5 years as the more almond-y conplex flavours from the berry stone get leached into the gin. When I set a batch off I do enough for the following year as well as a little extra to keep back. That way I always have some 1 & 5 year sloe gin to toast the season and of course, my grandfather who showed me the way!
So OP, are there any new autumnal preserves that you plan to try out this year? I made some delightful blackberry and apple jam last year but now am looking for new ideas this year... C |
