Hot toddy. Take a sturdy glass and wallop in plenty of cheap scotch whisky and about 1.5 times as much almost boiling water (that will cause much of the alcohol to evaporate so you don't have to hold back on the scotch) some honey and drink.
This is a guaranteed cure |

Not having to do anything is the cure!
Having your feet up all day with drinks and snacks and a box set - and NO ONE is allowed to talk to you!

Take a can of lemonade, empty into a mug, whack it in the microwave for a couple of minutes, drink it.
I thought this was total and utter nonsense when a good friend suggested it. Oddly, and with no logical or medically sound reason that I can establish, it's not a bad solution. (Although I also tend to chomp down paracetamol too, so it could just be the meds).
Ultimately, stay warm, eat, stay hydrated and I do hope you feel better soon. |

Chop up about three inches of ginger put in a bowl, pour over two cups boiling water. Add half cup lemon juice. Cover with cling film and let steep for a while. Strain the mixture when its cooled to warm and add two tblsp of honey.
This drink is really good for sore throats and coughs, its my go to thing at this stage. |

I do this, but add a sachet of lemsip /Beechams, some cinnamon, ginger and chilli powder.
Have before bed, if you're having more than one, leave the Beechams out of the next ones and add lemon juice. Then wrap up really warm in bed so you sweat buckets. Then have a nice refreshing shower in the morning. Generally always works for me. |

"King prawn tindaloo usually beats my cold into submission.
"
Yes, I've beaten them into submission with alcohol and dancing a few times!!
But actually honey and lemon drinks and chicken soup have been shown to help as much as anything....I like boiled eggs and marmite toast too. |

I think Zinc supplements, if needed, are the only evidence supported 'cure', in that duration and severity may be reduced.
Other things may help you to feel better, reducing congestion, discomfort, swelling etc. I'd take an anti inflammatory medication, rest and treat symptoms. |

I think there might be some evidence for Echinacea......?"
Yeah, here we go, from a review paper:
"Several herbal remedies were used for prevention and treatment viral respiratory illnesses. Among those that were found effective included maoto, licorice roots, antiwei, North American ginseng, berries, Echinacea, plants extracted carnosic acid, pomegranate, guava tea, and Bai Shao. There is scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of several complementary therapies for colds. Oral zinc may reduce the length and severity of a cold. Taking vitamin C supplements on a regular basis only slightly reduces the length and severity of colds. Probiotics were found better than placebo in reducing the number episodes of acute upper respiratory tract infections, the rate of episodes of acute upper respiratory tract infection and reducing antibiotic use. Alkaline diets or drinks might have antiviral properties as in vitro studies demonstrated inactivation effect of alkaline medium on respiratory virus. ! |

Your immune system, which needs to be looked after before getting any virus.
Once you have one you need to keep up your energy levels, so your immune system can deal with it and use remedies for the symptoms.
Don't smoke.
I like to use steam to unblock sinuses or sniff up warm water. Sudafed has been pretty good in the past, for me and gargling with soluble aspirin.

My grampy did this but used hot milk instead of water. Works too, the whiskey sure makes you sweat! |
