Some use them to find out who'd like to meet them.
Some use them to show their humour.
Some use them to learn new things.
Some use them to pass the time.
Some use them to demonstrate their ability to suck the fun out of life.
Some use them to troll, to fish for White Knights or to stir.
My trouble generally comes when I misread the OP and get it wrong.
