It's couples that ring fence the term, according to the militant swinging police it's a term reserved for couples who swap partners with other couples.
Personally I think that the term has grown and has been appropriated by people who enjoy casual sex with multiple partners. It's about lifestyle and mentality more than specific action. You could argue that being a member of this site makes you one
I met a couple and they were swinging, therefore then so did I, ergo I was a swinger too. It's all about use and appropriation of words
