Reducing any alcohol intake is going to help as it's a huge downer.

Good luck

Seek CBT through your GP. MIND the charity may be of assistance.

Like View said, alcohol is a depressant, keep it to a minimum or abstain.

OP, I have anxiety and depression issues too but you need to find healthier ways to cope - alcohol is a depressant.

If you're creative, use it as an outlet - if I'm anxious, I pick up a pencil and colour, if I feel depressed, I grab a pen and write.

If you feel a bad moment coming on, find a way to bite it in the bud before it becomes overwhelming.

CBT is cognitive behavioral therapy. Depression should not be treated with anti-depressants alone, especially severe depression.

To be fair mental health funding is at a low, so a referral to the mental health team may take ages. GPs may be able to access the number of talking therapies available, directly.

I'm doing a group session with Talking Therapies at the moment.

It lasts six weeks, I have two more to attend.

There's about 6 or 7 people that go and 2 ladies run it.

It does make you think and see things in a different way.

You don't talk about why you're depressed, it's about how you think about yourself, the world and others. I have no idea why the others that go are there and they have no idea why I'm there.

Hi mate.... firstly you are not alone as it appears there are several of us with depression /anxiety on here. Secondly alcohol is bad shit ffor you in excess or even the odd pint or two ... you won't build up a tolerance to it and it'll all contribute to your dark times. Get talking to your gp and insist on cbt asap.... I'm still waiting for mine 9 months after my last big bout but in the meantime use your friends to talk to..... they will relish the chance ti help but make sure you're alcohol free

When I went though this 3 years ago, It was the the lowest point of my life.

I found that living one day at a time got me though it. I went from suicidal to "if someone murde_ed me, I wouldn't be pissed off".

Now that I've met someone, I'm planning holidays for next year. Would never have done that 3 years ago.

Brings on anxiety and heightens depression. Giving it up or _educing it helps massively.

Some mental health trusts won't engage with people seeking treatment if they are drinking too much as the process is often futile

you seem to be dealing with it positively op. Finding out the best things that work for you. Also be selfish if you start to feel low just take time to look after yourself.

Good luck and with the right support and a positive attitude to helping yourself there will be light at the end of the tunnel

Amazing how many people around us really dont understand depression.

As a sufferer myself OP I understand.

Depression is not in the mind its a chemical imbalance so in reality its a physical but unseen illness.

Give me a message and I will send you my number. You can always talk to me. Happy to be the voice on the end of the phone.

can i ask you something.

How many people do you explain your depression to, i dont mean just telling them your depressed but actually explain it to them.

Its up to us to try and get people to understand. You cant expect people who have never experienced it to understand the feelings.

I can sympathize with someone whose lost a limb but i dont know what it feels like. We have to take responsibility for trying to get people to understand

I was seen by the crisis team at my local mental health unit within 2 hours of seeing my GP.

Possibly, I can only speak from my experience.

I think the NHS has a very strict protocol when it comes to certain issues though.

"Amazing how many people around us really dont understand depression.

As a sufferer myself OP I understand.

Depression is not in the mind its a chemical imbalance so in reality its a physical but unseen illness.

Give me a message and I will send you my number. You can always talk to me. Happy to be the voice on the end of the phone.can i ask you something.

How many people do you explain your depression to, i dont mean just telling them your depressed but actually explain it to them.

Its up to us to try and get people to understand. You cant expect people who have never experienced it to understand the feelings.

I can sympathize with someone whose lost a limb but i dont know what it feels like. We have to take responsibility for trying to get people to understand"

Ok. Depression is different for everyone but for me. There are days where the though of leaving my home makes me physically sick and panic sets in.

Nothing but nothing will make us feel better when we are having a bad day. We feel like crying. Silly things set us off. Or we can become very irritable and abrubt. We dont mean to be but it just comes out. We get restless but the motivation to actually do anything isnt there or again the thought of leaving the house can stop us.

There are so many variables and i deed tyles of depression. Although im diagnosed with depression as its been going on for more than two years now my actual diagnosis is "reactive depression" which means on a day to day basis I CAN be ok. However if something stressfull raises its head my brain can no longer produce the amount of dopermine a person would beed to cope with ut and keep rational thought to deal with it. Result? We meltdown and end up in a really low unp_edictable mood.

I cannot do my shopping in the day as a busy supermarket will cause panic attacks as the noise and sometimes loss of personal space becomes overwhelming.

What ive said barely scratches the surface as there is so much to it.

Those that dont understand and say "oh cheer up it will be ok" actually make it worse.

We dont chose to be like this we cannot help the way our brain is reacting.

There is always a main cause for depression but dealibg with that issue in order to mo e on isnt always possible so we have to find ways to cope and gradually day by day it can get a little better or in some cases. Not.

Its not a disease that people need to be afraid of. Its our battle its very personal to us. Yes we smile and seem normal on the outside but thats because its easier than having to try to explain to everyone why we are so unhappy.

All we ask os for a little understanding and patience.

The other way to look at it

You say you can sympathise with a person who has lost a limb.

Telling us to cheer up is like telling that person to use the missing limb.

It cant be done

but people need to understand that. My worst problem is if im high and people think im pissed or are always telling me to shut up yet far more people do understand people who are depressed cant just snap out of it yet because im being ott loud and chatty they think i can just snap out of it

Haven't read the whole thread... but I know from

Experience how tough things can get.... just a suggestion have you ever tried exercise ?

I started running/jogging 2 years ago... something I thought I would never ever do....it made and inc_edible change to my 'mood' and confidence. There's a noticeable change in me if I haven't been out for a while. I joined a local running group started park run at a weekend..of course there is an added bonus with jogging plenty of talent to eye up too

"Reducing any alcohol intake is going to help as it's a huge downer.

Good luck

Brings on anxiety and heightens depression. Giving it up or _educing it helps massively.

Some mental health trusts won't engage with people seeking treatment if they are drinking too much as the process is often futile "

When I went in they did ask about my drinking but that did not seem to bothe_ed eather I lied or I must of been behaving that month lol

"When I went though this 3 years ago, It was the the lowest point of my life.

I found that living one day at a time got me though it. I went from suicidal to "if someone murde_ed me, I wouldn't be pissed off".

Now that I've met someone, I'm planning holidays for next year. Would never have done that 3 years ago.

I am trying that and trying to have things to look forword too but great news mate hope every thing works out for you man you seem to be dealing with it positively op. Finding out the best things that work for you. Also be selfish if you start to feel low just take time to look after yourself.

Good luck and with the right support and a positive attitude to helping yourself there will be light at the end of the tunnel"

Thank you hun and yes today much better slept well had a long think about stuff watched cartoons feeling relaxed

Glad you're feeling a bit better today OP. I've suffe_ed with anxiety and depression since my late teens and have found that one of the best things is exactly what you did here, you told someone it was coming as soon as you felt it.

Over the years a few things that have helped me are removing or _educing alcohol, eating a gluten free diet, exercising, and talking openly about my thoughts and feelings. I also consciously tell myself that it's not forever, the fog lifts, I come out the other side etc.... I find that helps with the spiralling when my anxiety hits.

Hope tomorrow is brighter

Most people suffering from anxiety who turn to alcohol are merely self medicating. Finding an alternative that actually works is a real life changer.

Speak to your GP, but don't rely on anything he/she can prescribe you. What you want is a referral to proper mental health workers.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) might be the answer, at least give that a go, but you must remain sober throughout that treatment. If not then a proper psychiatrist will be able to get you on the right meds, and instruct your GP to continue the prescriptions.

Things can get better, good luck.
