Why are we so seemingly predisposed to believing in all manner of shite?

Why does popular opinion over-ride common sense?

I mean..fairies,ghosts,Gods,astrology,heaven, hell and honest politicians...all highly unlikely yet belief still persists.

Why?

Probably fear of our own mortality for most of what you said but people who beleive in honest politicians are certifiable effing idiots.

Obviously not...thousands of people can't be wrong? Well...how about the millions of Christians in the world...and the millions of muslims?

Can't both be right.

"Everybody has a belief, even if they believe theres nothing its something they believe in"

Yeah...even disbelief is a belief.

Yet people seem to always choose the convoluted extremely unlikely poetic thing to believe in over the often simpler more likely thing.

I realise that was a clumsy sentence but...like...Creationism...in this day and age.

How the hell can that still be taken as real by so many? (See what I did there?)

Put it this way....choose an unlikely but oft believed thing...

Think about it for five minutes.

Rip it to pieces with simple logic.

Science is a method, not a belief. It takes into account that which we can be sure of and builds on that in a systematic fashion. When the hypothesis is found wanting it is altered.

Faith, on the other hand, does not change its hypothesis in the light of new evidence.

It's bollox.

And lazy bollox at that

Like some big beardy dude sitting up in the clouds in a big gold chair, turning people into pillars of salt for lying with men?

You shittin' me?

Yes, hence we all got our own beliefs, for example, an atheist that likes xmas, but not god/jesus, is abit confused with their religion as they cant cherry pick one thing and another."

I'm an atheist and I don't like Xmas either - it is a mere festival of conspicuous consumption, driven by people telling us to BUY!!!

And there was this, like baby person somewhere or something?

Oh, and the Christians didn't even decide on the date of Xmas until the mid 4th century, but appropriated at the Council of Nicea under the direction of the mighty and mighty pissed-off emperor, Constantine.

At the Council various competing traditions of early Christianity were brought together in one whole and then the heretics were purged, oh and the Bible was standardised and a bunch of spare gospels removed.

This isn't evidence for the Work of God.

That is the hands of men.

"These things give people hope and excitement. Without these life would be boring and pointless.

Yeah I agree the world is a brighter place from the addition of many of these ideas...but people actually believe it. That's what I don't get.

They have been taught to believe from a young age, or choose to believe because it's better than having nothing.

Some of it is used for control, like Santa and the tooth fairy. i wasnt, everthing i believe in has come from my own thoughts and being as an a adult nothing to do with what i thought i should believe in thats why i was so confused and didnt understand for so long

Where did your thoughts get their fuel? its quite hard to explain as im still in the process of transending again. But i had thoughts in my head but i had thoughts in my head that i kept in my head and about 11 years ago because of my believes someone came into my life, understood and helped me transcend. then about a year ago thoughts on the next level came into my head and i started to transcend again and a few months ago someone else came into my life whose helping me transcend to the next level"

Only since the modern period - the whole idea of Mothering Sunday was introduced because domestic servants, particularly girls, didn't have a chance to spend Xmas with their own families so were released for a couple of days a year to see them.

My view is this. The human race can't understand why we are here and in turn we constantly seek to reach an understanding. This being the case we are open to accepting all kinds of ideas. All religions exploit this in order to gain following. Believing in fairies or ghosts is no different than believing in a god. But they offer a meaning to us even though none of it can be proved. We just want to believe because we need to.

I always said i wasnt religious and im not but as soon as i changed the word religion to faith it all made sense to me. I have no belief whatsoever in what i grew up thinking i should believe in but i do very much have a faith that is personal to me then it all just started fitting into place and actually realizing how strong my faith is that i kept buried for so long

Faith in God or yourself?faith in the things i believe in. I dont believe in a god as such."

God is nothing more than a man made concept which was brought about to control the masses. There are hundreds of God within all kinds of religions. They can't all be right

But i had thoughts in my head but i had thoughts in my head that i kept in my head and about 11 years ago because of my believes someone came into my life, understood and helped me transcend. then about a year ago thoughts on the next level came into my head and i started to transcend again and a few months ago someone else came into my life whose helping me transcend to the next level

Transcending what?

my body and soul and spirit. Its my spiritual awakening

and this is what happened to me 11 years ago. I had faith that if you openef yourself up to recieve positive energy it will come into your life and thats what happened once i allowed myself to open up

If that works for you then that's good. Its much better than somethings I've heard before.

Each to their own. Life would be pretty darn boring if we all shared the same beliefs...

"Why are we so seemingly predisposed to believing in all manner of shite?

Why does popular opinion over-ride common sense?

I mean..fairies,ghosts,Gods,astrology,heaven, hell and honest politicians...all highly unlikely yet belief still persists.

Why?

"

It comforts people. For example, religion was started in the absense of science to explain why things like crops or fertility went wrong. Or why there were lots or few animals to hunt. Cultures attributed anomalies as devine or spiritual intervention.

Then we figured out that crops and fertility fail for a number of reasons. But religion stuck around because, by then, it offered an afterlife.

spirituality offers the same kind of comfort - I think it gives the person some kind of feeling where they're in control of, or part of, something much bigger than themselves. It's a way to feel less insignificant.

That's what I think, anyways. But what do I know, I'm only a vicar.

Only kidding. I'm not a vicar.

OP belief and imagination are linked having both is part of the human condition and vital to invention .

It was once believed flight was impossible someone believed the opposite and set about proving it

The human condition for invention goes like this this you imagine you can do something or you imagine something then you believe you can it or make it at that point you set about making it happen .

As for the god question ghosts and other such this can I refer to quantum theory .

I choose to be nether a believer or a non believer and for those reason I choose not vilify or judge those that do .

Erm... ...well you can't really be neither a believer or a non believer...it's kinda binary. Get that fence post out of your bum!

And you left a real one sentence cliff hanger...I'd love to hear what ghosts have to do with quantum theory

Also I don't see atheism as vilifying those of belief...it's more kind of pulling a face and saying "Really?".

Belief in fairies is laughable.

But when on group of people say believe in my fairy over all other fairies and persecute those that don't then you have trouble...

And this is what has defined human history.....and is still evident in the atrocities happening today.

Faith is at once a "blessing" and a curse.

And all that before I even put the kettle on....forgive me oh great PG Tip!

ok op you have a stated a belief that you don't believe ....I on the other hand am neutral on such things as ghosts god and other strange events I nether believe or disbelieve .

I have experienced strange events that had meaning to me but that doesn't make me a believer of ghosts because I can not prove them nor does it make me disbeliever for the same reason .

so I'm open not closed minded on the suggest as there is not proof one way or the other yet I'm the same with all things .

the universe is infinite and there are infinite universes parallel universes multi universes if existence is like that.

then anything is possible no matter how improbably hence my open minded approach .

belief isn't a problem its how individuals choose to act based off of their believes that is the real problem in my humble opinion

He he...yeah I was just playing with you really...you are still giving a third answer to a two answer question tho. Perhaps your belief is in a quantum state?

And yes I love your last sentence.. very true..well said.

Maybe he's in there to make sure Mrs Clinton wins.
