Most drivers struggle to follow them so what hope do you think you have of getting through to the rogue two wheeled drivers?

Yep and the fact we are entitled to use the entire lane is often forgotten by motorists

We were driving through the town centre last night on the way to a club.

Saw a cyclist run three red lights. No helmet, dark clothes and no lights......what a cunt!

Some poor driver will end up hitting and killing someone like that, probably go to prison for manslaughrer and have to live with that for the rest of their lives

Are our lives so busy we can't wait for a red light

Ummm i actually take offence to that!

I have riden a motorcycle for 18 years now, i always ride cautiously and am very familiar with the highway code due to work. The group i ride with are also highly skilled rides and ride within the highway code

Im also a highly qualified driver.

Personally if more drivers stuck to the highway code there would be less biker crashes.

For example, before a biker moves they always check their blind spot...its called a life saver for a reason and in all the years ive been riding i have never seen a biker move without doing it....however i have been nearly taken out more times than i can count by a cager who

1) doesnt use their indicators

2) doesnt check their mirrors or blind spots

And how many bikers do you see texting? Eating? Putting make up on?

Maybe this post should be about a specific incident rather than a generalization aimed at all bikers and cyclists?

Highway code says you give cyclist 1.8 metres of space when overtaking, who gives a cyclist that much room?

I am a cyclist a motorbiker and a car driver, things cyclist do infuriate me as a cyclist, things car drivers do infuriate me as a cyclist and a car driver, some people are just fucking wankers whatever mode of transport they are in

You can bet your bottom dollar, the wanker cyclists are wanker car drivers too

Meh, was lane splitting a local dual carriageway for miles on Sunday. Who's the most annoying the m/c that's gone past in a flash that most don't even see till its gone past them or all the cunts sitting in the outside lane doing 2mph than those in the left lane (if there's any car in that lane ) None of whom are actually foi g the speed limit? I virtually pushed a car to move over, blithly sitting in the outside lane of an m/t section at 50mph, eventually moved over, looked in my mirrors and he was indicating to pull back to the outside of an m/t road!!

Sunday drivers, euthanasia is too good for them!

For clarity - the majority of motorcyclists and cyclists are indeed very good and savvy road users.

Much like car users though some are idiots.

On ONE commute today alone I've seen weaving in and out of all the lanes in a motorway at speed forcing at least 2 car drivers to rapidly apply their brakes to avoid a collision, jumping of red lights into oncoming traffic, speeding off at traffic lights the instant they turn green well in excess of the 30mph limit, riding through a zebra crossing as someone was crossing narrowly missing them.

I don't know if there's something in the water today or what but the numpties seem to be out for sure!

I see commuters using all forms of transport as lemmings & my mindset is different when I ride/drive amongst them. Probably why I am still here & largely in one piece after spending 10+ years as a LondonDR in the 80's/90's..

There are less idiots out there than there are sensible riders

I would also like to point out you can only really comment on your perspective and not on that of the other drivers as line of sight differs.

Motorbikes can "filter" through traffic if the rider feels confident it can be done safely and done at a reasonable speed....again this comes down to the riders line lf sight and his knowledge of his bike width and road position.

I know this comes across like im defending riders and i am defending those that are safe riders.....trust me there have been times i have seen those in no protective gear riding like wankers and they do get it pointed out when i can.

Bikers; please remember that if you insist on riding dead centre behind my van I can't see you!

If I spot you I'll then spend too much time watching my mirrors waiting for you to howl past me so I don't cause you to clip me as you over take crossing the no overtaking white line that obviously doesn't apply to you.

That is all.

How often do you check your mirrors though?

Remember the road is live. Things can change in an instant...im not having a dig so please dont think i am.

If im driving or riding, my standard routine is far to near, gauges and rear. Repeat. I know where everything is in respect to my position on the road at that moment in time.

If a biker is in a blind spot then they should be aware and make themsevles as visible as possible...adopting the "command" position which it close to the line so they are visible in wing mirrors and oncoming traffic.....same tactic with cars, vans and trucks

If you don't see a weaving filtering bike at least six vehicles back you ate not looking often enough. It's also why I don't just sit in the middle even if I can when filtering, nowadays a headlight can be lost amongst a sea of DRLs and the ever increasing people that seem to drive with lights on in broad daylight. I find the it's there/it's not effect of the headlight more effective. IMO it also helps those you are approaching just speed better..

Really? Thanks for the reminder.

I'll bear that in mind as it's me that'll probably come off worse when some clown pulls out in front of me or doesn't indicate at a roundabout.

My favourite car drivers are ones who try and lessen the gap between lanes so I can't filter through.

They nudge themselves over with a mindset of

"If I'm stuck in traffic then you have to be too"

Bollocks.

The reason I'm on a bike is so I don't have to sit in traffic like a div.

I drive my van way more than a car and with a bulkhead I rely on my mirrors a lot.

In answer to your question, I check them an awful lot. I had a near miss with a bike some years ago and am now totally paranoid.

I was turning off a roundabout. Followed the correct lanes. Indicated as text book checked and checked mirrors only to have a two wheel missile bolt out from behind me and try to get up my left hand side as I exited the roundabout.

It was close. Very close. He nailed it swerving either side of everything. I think he thought he was a getaway driver or something.

I was flagged down by another bike. I was really shaken and the second rider wanted to apologise on behalf of the biking community, saying 'we're not all twats'. He'd seen it all and was as shocked as I was.

As a consequence, I'm even more paranoid about bikes hiding in my blind spots.

Bike safety isn't just up to me.

I'm really sorry to hear that - and I've already stated elsewhere above that there are idiots in all forms of transport. On this mornings commute it was the cyclists and motorcyclists that were causing the issues and almost caused accidents but of course it applies to all modes of transport.

I'm genuinely sorry to hear about your son.

As a lifelong cyclist and strong advocate of road safety also a driver who has been driving a long time with hundreds of thousands of miles under my belt.

I think it's all about perspective.

Yes some cyclist are douche bags and ride like numpties, but

How many car drivers and pedestrians are killed as a result of an accident that was a direct result of the cyclist?

Probably a dozen or less per year?

Now how many cyclists, pedestrians and other road users a killed by bad drivers per year.

I would guess that it's something like 1000% greater.

Obviously neither are justified and very wrong.

But next time you get angry with a cyclist just because they are getting through the traffic faster than you so you decide to give them as scare remember you have a couple of ton of metal to protect you they have a couple of mm of lycra.

As said previously usually if someone is a bad cyclist they are probably a bad driver also.

The reintroduction of the cycling proficiency test at school would be a help massively.

Motorcycles are a different thing entirely.

While there are many many safe one's on the road.

Unfortunately the speed at which they travel is what goes against them.

They can be on you in a split second before you have had a chance to respond.

The other day on the M27 coming towards Southampton a motorbike undertook myself and a lorry we we both in the flow of traffic with lots of vehicles ahead and behind with Noone lane hogging.

I was doing probably 60mph in a two lane section.

Suddenly I jumped out of my skin with fright as a motorcycle roared between myself and the lorry he was probably doing close to 100mph weaving between all the car's and was gone in seconds.

Now I didn't even see him even though I had looked in my mirror not a second before.

All it takes is one vehicle to move a fraction and it's game over.

I do lots of motorway driving and see many many assholes car's, lorries, coaches and motorcycles all not following the highway code.

Driving to close etc...

Remember the highway code applies to every Road user.

Stay safe and alive people.

Mr ddc "

I used to be a truck driver and well remember a day that I had to make a delivery to a building site in the middle of London. I was driving an articulated lorry with 25 tons of building materials on the trailer. I got to the street where the site was, pulled up and the site traffic marshal came to me and said that himself and another couple of marshals would see me back onto the site. All lorries had to be backed in due to the narrowness of the site.

The marshals waited for a break in the traffic and then went out into the road and stopped traffic in both directions. I drove forward diagonally across the road to be able to reverse onto site. Watching my mirrors for the traffic marshals signals, I began reversing towards the site entrance. The marshal at the rear gave a very hasty stop signal and at that very moment a woman pushing a baby buggy and with a small child running with her, ran across the site entrance, not stopping at all. I hadn't seen her because she had come from my blind side. She had ignored another marshals instruction not to cross until I had got onto site. Some people just seem to have a death wish.

There were numerous occasions that when I was delivering in London people - drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians - did things that were unbelievable which could quite easily have resulted in them being hurt. Mind you it's not only London, similar things happen country-wide but not given the same amount of publicity sometimes.

Up until recently I was a member of a cycling club and we would regularly get stuff thrown at us by passing motorists, bottles of piss, tacks, milkshakes etc..

As a club we were very drilled in road etiquette and manners.

Each member knew that anything they did reflected badly on not only the club but all other cyclists.

So when on group rides, the roads that were as quiet as possible were chosen and we were drilled in bunch riding on a road.

Believe it or not it's better for the group to bunch up two a breast creating a smaller sized body to pass rather than string out for a long way causing mayhem.

Also there are signals and a complete other language used by cyclists warning others when there is a car behind or in front.

Next time you get stuck behind a group just remember these people are just the same as you, enjoying a hobby, keeping fit and socialising with other's.

Yes being held up for an extra 30 seconds can be frustrating but are you really in that much of a rush?

Interesting also how other countries act towards cyclists.

I have ridden in a few and in lanzarote for example they are extremely warm and courteous towards bikes and always give them loads of room when passing.

Cyclists have as much right to use the road as a car yes they don't pay road tax but its not a motorized vehicle. I used to cycle the three miles to work every day I was overtaken by a van who after passing me turned left immediately I hit the side of the van face first I fractured my leg broke my wrist and four fingers the arsehole didn't even stop and the police were as helpful as a chocolate teapot that was the 4th and last time I got knocked off my bike I do still ride though.

"Ummm i actually take offence to that!

"

Very big to this. If only it was compulsory for all road users to actually ride a motorcycle on the open roads before they can get their car licence (e.g. have to do the cbt as standard before doing their car test) - would help people realise what it is actually like out on the roads then. Similarly with road cyclists - there certainly are some hairy moments on roundabouts, dual carriageways and the like ...

I do however appreciate that there are still some idiot drivers/bikers/cyclists out there. I drive, ride and cycle when commuting and still get infuriated with some other drivers, bikers or cyclists for doing crazy maneouvres - sadly there are just some less cautious people out on the roads ...

Because no one on 4 or more wheels breaks any laws or drives like a dick.

I can't recall many cyclists actually using the road where i live. They normally just ride as fast as they like on the pavement. I can just about understand riding on pavements if your considerate, but most of these clowns expect you to just get out of they way while they ride as fast as they like.

Often slipping in between cars in two lanes to dodge traffic. I thought the white lines were especially for motorcycles.

I only with the poor driver hits him in the right way, to give the stupid cyclist a long slow painfull death. I am a cyclist who is getting fucked off with idiots running red lights, riding on the roads without lights, even riding using a mobile phone. No more sympathy for them.

There is a whole section aimed at car drivers on how to drive around cyclists, might be worth reading up on it. Midlands Police are now prosecuting drivers that don't give the mandatory 3 feet gap between them and the cyclist.

Thank you, enjoy the roads.

Being a professional driver that has to have regular driving tests to keep my job just thought I would have my say.

Every now and then you come across and idiot in a white van, stupid taxi driver. moron cyclist and some idiot who thinks he is Valentino Rossi....

However I have yet to make one journey in 10 years however long or short that i haven't seen someone breaking the law or not following the highway code...

Forget the usual on the phone indicating etc... The main reason this country struggles with traffic is a very VERY high percentage of people driving cars do not give away even if the person they are giving way to will not effect their journey.

It's an absolute shambles.. lets sort our own driving out before criticizing others.

I would love to mark op's driving..

"Taxi drivers get on my tits they think they own the fuckin roads"

I actually do own a large percentage of the roads in North Norfolk due to the amount I have to pay to the council to keep my vehicle legal and on the road.

I hope you express your sentiments to the next taxi driver you have to use in your god-forsken part of England

Driving/riding standards overall are getting progressively worse because most people are wrapped up in something else when they should be concentrating on their driving. Most car drivers don't look further then the end of their bonnet and the number of all types of vehicles running red lights is shocking. Mainly because Plod have surrendered the roads. When you hear people talking about why you shouldn't drive recklessly, drink/drive it's usually 'you might lose your licence, get fined etc.' Rarely 'you might injure/kill someone'...

I don't drive so am not qualified to comment on the rules of the road but I'm a Lollipop lady and all types of road users disrespect me and the others who do my job. Cars, bikes, school taxis and parents all display bad manners. We work in all weathers and we don't do it for the pay, so a bit more consideration please, while we cross the children safely to school

I'm quite happy when I go out in the tractor, fairly rare to see motorbikes etc outwith the summer time and even when I do, the roads are only wide enough for the tractor!

I'm king of the road! Bow down to the fatness of my tractor! Lol

Not dissing you or any crossing patrol person as you do a great underpaid job BUT:

Why do you provide crossing services to any mug who wants to cross the road during your morning and afternoon stint?

Children crossing is obviously important but it is off-pissing to be held up while some group of wobbly slummy-mummies or able-bodied adult is given vip escort across the road.

Just askin'

Thank you for the compliment.

Well, the parents at the school I work for aren't slummy mummies, I will say that a high percentage of them work inbetween school runs. We aren't allowed to cross lone adults.

"The Law has changed , lane hogging is now an offence , so they have to move to their left if theres space "

Absolute rubbish. By law cycles may use the entire width of the lane and this is taught by gov't approved training schemes, try googling Primary Position.

Please show which law specifically states cycles must stay left within the lane.

What law is being broken by a cyclist in the primary position?

Or by riding 2 abreast?

No it wouldn't. Unless the driver was doing something wrong it would be death by careless but in the scenario given above, unless the motorist was doing something significantly wrong they would not be charged with anything

I would assume those people you have described are the parents of the children who are crossing the road after the school run.

What difference does it make who is crossing the road?

From the web:

Take, for instance, the case of this High Court judge who shot through a red light in London at 64mph. It was a 30mph zone and the judge tried to get the case thrown out as “abuse of process” and that his speed was “not a relevant factor or consideration.”

One rule for us and one for them eh!

Newcastle upon Tyne

Some have a death wish. Tonight I was driving home along a country lane and drivers were swerving to avoid hitting a cyclist who was wearing dark clothes and had no lights front or back. The road is not the widest so when you drive it you send to stay very close to the grass verge I would be surprised if he made the three miles to the next major road and cycle path.

As a cyclist this type of fuckwit really annoys me, he deserves what he gets. He/she is not a cyclist, just a knob on a bike that gives cyclists a bad name.

"Tried" to get the case thrown out suggests he was unsuccessful.

So not really one rule for us and one rule for them eh?
