Double glazing quotes..

Hertford

I decided to replace a bathroom windo and a kitchen door. Initially I decided to use either a local glazier or the firm who had completed a previous installation. The glazier can no longer install as the are not FENSA registered and the previous installer never got back to me.

After putting the requirements through a price quoter I was contacted by nationwide installer who quoted me to night. I thought that the practise of quoting excessive prices and then offering a 5O % discount had ceased but clearly not. I was slightly shocked to be quoted £6000 for one window and one door plus two smaller windows which I did not want replaced . Similar work in Belfast cost £900 in total . If I adjust the comarison for the two small windows to £1500, it seems odd that the cost in London for similar work should be twice the price . The salesman quickly halved his price to £2900 and even asked me how much I was prepared to pay.

Whilst I was impressed with the quality of the product , I considered the job to be worth in the region of £2000 to £2500 pounds .

What is other members experience with quotes for double glazing ?. Will the company make a follow up call with a more competitive price or should I contact them again to try and negotiate. ?

I refused to be drawn into their ridiculous games. I got quotes from main companies, kicked reps out when they offended my intelligence. And ended up paying far less. But a few years back.

Go for reputable cos with guarantees but make them wait until you're ready, at the right price for you.

I have no.minimum that I'll not go below. I won't order to their timescales. Reps unhappy? Send another. I'd aim for just over retail price, fitted yourself - as a maximum.but they fit and guarantee.

It's not triple glazed? Discount it more then mr rep!

We would never use a double-glazing firm, always just a local glazier. Last year we had a 10' high, 8-light plus 4-panel oriel window replaced for £1.2k. This year we had a 5'x 7', 6-light window, with stained glass, replaced for £345. I just shop around until they give me a price I'm happy with.

Is this a wind up?

I've been all over Google looking for famous quotations by double glazing, would seem he's been a pretty quiet chap...

I still talk in imperial. I measure in metric though. Most builders I know do too.

Don't use National Installers. All hype and commission. Look for a local company that extrudes their own uPVC and sells the windows as well.

You can use companies that are not FENSA registered, you just have to go through Building Regs.

I'm measure-flexible depending on the size of thing to be measured or the level of precision required.

Title. - A double glazing quote.

I know one.

"You buy one, you get one free"

That's the only one I know.

Hi. Thanks for the advice. Is it an offence not to go through building regulations for replacement windows and doors..?

Luckily there is a local installer accross the road from me so will be inviting them to quote when the estimater returns from holiday .

I am glad that I asked a national companny to quote as there sales technique waa an eye opener
