Kent

I've been there my friend, 11 years (I was 30) not as long, nor as much of my life.

Mixed emotions is an accurate description. But it is good to draw a line under it so the next chapter can begin.

your legal surname is acquired in much the same way a new born acquires theirs. So use the surname you want to be known by and over time you acquire the legal right to it without spending lots of money and effort in court...

Been divorced over 15 years now and as much as it killed me at the time I can honestly say it was the best thing to ever happen to me and I'm sure you will say the same in time

You can change your name to princess consuela if you want to. Just fill out a deed poll and you're done.

To the OP... I could say, be thankful you both 'chose' this way to end your time together, rather than the shocker of your other half dying suddenly. That, my friend, is a real headfuck.

To the lady asking about name change after divorce, yes, of course you can change your name for the vast majority of people you deal with, and thats that (some gov departments will accept your decree absolut, if they have your maiden name on record.).

However, for banking purposes, they will not accept your decree absolut as proof of your desire to change your name,, you will need to change your name by deed poll - you can do that yourself for just under 40 quid. And it is entirely up to you whether you wish to be known as Ms or Miss.

I thought there must have been some sort of paper work to do otherwise no matter what surname i used neither my birth certificate or divorce papers would be correct

You can, as of tonight if you wish, decide to be known as Miss Joanna Fartpants.

Only the banks require proof... via deed poll.

And any government agency. DVLA, passport, DWP

That said it is still very straightforward

If you didn't want to go as far as deed poll if you change your name back to your maiden name with dvla or passport etc then just use one of these as proof of id and open a new bank account in your new name...only thing you not supposed to change by deed poll is your forename if you have been christened. Some old archaic law involved I think...
