When does 'young' end?

I have noticed that a fair few of the profiles that message me include the words 'young man' (women may also be describing themselves thus).
The age on these profiles is over 37 and up to about 60.
So, when does young end?

Radio-carbon dating might provide the answer. |

"I'm glad so many of you feel young but do you really describe yourself to strangers as a young person?
"
It depends on who you are talking to.
I still feel young but young to me is under 35.
Whereas to those in their 60s I probably am young... I'm still little more than a child to my 91 year old gran

These are profiles. They don't know the ages of those reading the blurb.
To people who know me then I might be young to some and old to others (I'm positively ancient according to some children). To folk on Fab it would be pushing it, a lot, to describe myself as a young woman when I'm 51 and long through the menopause. |

Probably
There's nothing wrong with a bit of self belief though |

Sorry.
I'm hidden and I still received two random 'fancy a...' messages but both described themselves as young men. There was 13 years between those ages. |

Sorry Sophee, another random thought on this subject.
Is this claiming young because people are later at starting to lead fully independent lives, away from the parental home and financial support from parents?

I get called young!
By a couple who are 86 and 82 respectively!
I am formulating plans for my second childhood now though.
I think young ends when you are surprised by the young looking coppers and you make a noise when you stand up! |

Surely the end of youth coincides with the end of innocence and the coming of responsibility.
It doesn't stop us being young at heart though, even when we are "In fair round belly, with a good capon lined, with eyes severe, and beard of formal cut, full of wise saws, and modern instances"
Of course, personally I have long been at the Pantalone stage...

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack! |
I`m turning 60 in a few days but my inner child is still alive and kicking! If I could I would be outside tomorrow running my old Land Rover without the exhaust connected. I love driving through deep puddles and shooting water over the hedges. I love noisy fireworks etc. so in my head I`m still in my teens! |

Young never ends...
people assume there's some big personality shift when we become adults (ask any teenager) but in reality - we stay exactly the same.
we are just the same children but with slower moving bodies.
don't believe me?
watch the adverts on TV - who exactly are they trying to sell to?
listen to the language, watch the images.
we are just children with a bit more practice.
Thus old... its just faster moving people being bitchy.

What does your mirror say?
Of course be carefree and youthful in outlook but young is a stage.

If you're 21,and you feel the need to emphasise how young you are, you're probably an ugly 21 year old.
If you're 75,and describing your self as young, you may be lying.
That's it.

Anyone calling you young MAN in a message is very confused...
Age is relative, you are an adult when you find teenagers annoying, and old when everyone is annoying, big space in the middle |

Actually, that won't work as I am about the same size as a manatee. |

Well your smile lit up the room, which given that the bar was a bit was quite a big deal.
You can be tall, thin, and a redhead if you wish xx |

From my current perspective at around 40, from my parent's perspective at around 60, from my children's perspective at around 28. |

Did you take take the long and winding road?
Look after yourself, granddad." Always do, but most of the club's I am visiting are trying to kill me with good food and booze
Was supposed to be west of here by now, but the every club house I visit is leading to more invites, think my 4 week ride may take 8 or more |

Worse or perhaps more inappropriately used is 'boy', referring to an adult male beyond 30s - you see them here too.
It's a positive spin on someone who's possibly reckless, irresponsible, immature etc.
I'd prefer to see an age and have someone describe their personality and outlook. |

i turn radio 2 off after huey morgan and back on when brian matthews starts, i love the scots anchor one radio 4 but cant do with vanessa feltz or jeremy vine. I could listen to pete tong, but couldnt do with chris moyles. i loved listening to john bishop doing the mid morning show on a sat on radio 2 but , loathed graham norton. Same with mark radcliffe and stuart maconie, loved one even doing a show about folk music , the other just doesnt speak to me, even when playing music i might like. I loved listening to mark lammarr. John peel and alexis korner, annie nightingale, tony blackburn and the bloke who is a classically trained singer who occasionally does stand in shows , the rest seem to be people who wouldnt know serious jockin if it rode em roughshod an bareback over beechers on national day |

"I would say after late 20s
Although Paul still tries to pretend he's young " haha I disagree... The saying is true and alive... Your as old as you feel... There's guys in their 20's who are completely in ill health, covered in herpes, couldn't lift a thumb etc lol then a lot older guys how look younger and are young at heart |

Hopefully littlemisssecret1980 and td103 will be in a premier lab soon to provide the definitive scientific answer to this question.;-)
For me anyone using the term young who is on this site would be either to immature or desperately clinging to a myth that Youth is a good thing.
I would gladly repeat my 30's but to be 20 something even if I retained my knowledge would be a nightmare. |

Oh I like the ones you get at Christmas with Chocolate in!
I was going to say, "if you want to play "hunt the chocolate" in my pantaloons, you're welcome", but it just doesn't quite give the mental picture I was aiming for...

I had a great friend I made at university. He was a mature student, in his early 50s when I was in my early 20s.
He is the root cause of why I don't work Wednesdays.
Anyway, we're talking one time about 'growing up' and he said to me that when he was a kid he couldn't wait to grow up. Then he joined the army as a boy soldier, did national service out in Malaya and Singapore... but still felt 'young'.
Returned to the UK, started a family and went to work in the print business. Had all the conventional trappings of adulthood but still didn't feel any different, still didn't feel like he was grown up.
As I say, I met him in his early 50s and he confessed to me that he *still* didn't feel like an adult - whatever that meant.
He said to me, "Whatever you do [Joe], don't get old."
He was one of the most erudite, interested, switched on people I've ever had the pleasure to know.
He died two years ago, still filled with childish awe at the beauty and wonder of the world.
I take this as a lesson.

Being a mature youth now,
I have lost a few friends over the years.. I know, very careless of me.
But one thing that my few years on this rock has taught me is to maintain a youthful outlook on life.. I think no differently to when I was in my early 20's other than I am a little wiser and injuries hurt more now... But I still go out, get stuck in and do those daft things that get me hurt.. And have a bloody good time with it..
Don't put off until tomorrow what you want to do today.. You may regret it.
I know that I will only stop feeling young once that final nail is banged home and they stick me in a hole... Or send me off on a flaming ship.. A viking burial at sea would be so cool. |

I read somewhere (was on the Internet so must be true) that if you don't grow up by the time you are 50 then you don't have to. I have managed so far and with 5 months to go I have no intention of giving in now! Although I am not so sure that not growing up and being young are entirely the same thing. |

I have just realised there may be the odd clue that you are no longer as young as you thought:
1) when you know all the words to the songs on 'Pick of the Pops' and
2) when your daughter is going to see a 'new' film and you think "didn't I go and see that film 30 years ago?"

When you allow it to?
Yes one can be grown up and mature etc but young is a mindset I think, one which means anyone health permitting can still at times be that daft 'old' bugger playing with the new pup or with the newer much younger members of the extended family..

This is true. There's a huge difference between immature and young I think.
Some people are born old like my friend who left a 50th birthday party at 9:45 |

Yes, my niece's face when I came back from walking the dogs with her then 4 year old and had shown her how to do the splashing about in a puddle game was one which was more about look how wet she is rather than how much fun she had just had..
But, but did the party have that really loud undecipherable thing the yoof call music? |
