After coming back from my mum recently, I still can't get over how superstitious she is.
Here are a few of hers.
Never put shoes on a table, even new.
Never hand a pair of scissors or a knife to someone, as it can cut their friendship.
Always throw salt over your shoulder, even if it is not spilled.
Never pass on the stairs, as it is bad luck.
Never let a black cat cross your path.
Always say white rabbit when you get up, on the first day of the month.
Anyone got any others? |

my mum will never have the number 13 showing on anything, won't have lilac in the house, if you return to the house because you've forgotten anything you have to sit down before you go back out, if you put an item of clothing on inside out you mustn't change it and loads more that I can't remember. |

Dr Johnson (of that Dictionary fame) was a notoriously superstitious/OCD type.
He'd *have* to enter a house with a particular foot and have the left foot be the first to land at the top of a flight of stairs... or he'd run back down and do it again.
Bizarre. |

Isaac Newton (scientist/autistic type) split light using a prism for the first time and divided the spectrum into 7 colours.
How many colours in the visible spectrum?
Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet.
But that's only 6...?
A: because Newton was an intensely superstitious man who believed that 7 was a magical, lucky number so he added indigo to the mix to complement his belief.

I don't step on drains when there is 3 in a row
as for passing a knife to someone there is a correct way of doing it that is deemed as non threatening. Handle facing towards the person you are passing it to with your palms open |

I just chuck it at them, the look of sheer panic on their face is a sight to behold sometimes ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Why not lilac? |

I'm just not superstitious but realise our beliefs influence our results.
People want to make meaning from things, so we inevitably get driven to draw the wrong conclusions, in the absence of hard evidence - sometimes we contradict the evidence in what we believe |

I didn't come across the shoes on tables one until quite recently when I freaked out a friend by placing my shoes on my table. She couldn't remember why but said it was bad luck.
I live dangerously...walk under ladders and offer strokes to black cats and all... |
