Three students go into a second hand shop and buy a tv for £30

They chip-in £10 each.

After they've left the kind manager notices it should have been reduced to £25. He sends the assistant after them to give them the £5.

The assistant can't be bothered dividing it into three. So he gives them £1 each and keeps £2 for himself.

So, each of the students paid £9, equals £27. The assistant has got £2, equals £29.

Where is the other pound???

There's no reason to add the £2 to the £27. That's not a sum that makes any sense.

I think the real question here is why has the assistant taken it upom himself to decide that he can't be bothered giving the correct change and will keep some himself!

But the fact is they DID pay £9 each because the assistant kept the other 67p x3 =£2.

The math is even simpler. They paid £27 the assistant kept two quid. The other £25 is in the till.

The trick is to ignore the £30 which actually never existed apart from on a wrong price tag!

I have a 100 pound watermelon laying out in the sun. 99% of the watermelon’s weight is water. After a few hours 98% of the watermelon’s weight is water.

How much water, in weight, evaporated?

Yes! You win £1 !

Talking about the £30 is just to confuse things.

Exactly, the £2 should've been taken away from the £27, not added. So the £30 is a decoy.

They thought it was £30, but got £3 back from the naughty assistant.

Haha If you get the £25, add £1 each then add his £2 you get £30.

Yet it doesn't work that way in the question.

Nah, you can't fool me - you have to subtract the two pounds from the £27 - £25!!!

They paid £9 each, which is £27.

£25 in the till

£2 in the assistants pocket.

They tricked you by adding the £2 to the £27 instead of subtracting it.

The students paid £30 and the assistant pocketed £2 and gave back £3 (£27) so only £25 went in the til.

It's obvious:

There is 1 lb of solid + 99 lbs of water = 1% of the mass.

Later , the 1 lb is still there, but now it's 2% of the mass;

So 1 lb is 2% of... 50 lbs

So there is now 49lbs of water ; there was 99lbs of water, so 50 lbs has gone.

Maths degree person here... The trick here isn't the 30 pound... It's the fact your brain wants to think the kids paid 27 for the TVs

They didn't... The ended up paying 28 quid....

Remember they already gave 25... And then the kid gave them back another 3... And he kept 2

Think you need to check your calcs .

They originally handed over £30. They were given £3 back by the dodgy assistant. So they paid out £27.

Why do you think they paid £28???

The most important bit in the question posed.

Who buys a telly for £30 anyway. They should know it's gonna explode after a days usage

Because 30 minus 2 (the assistant kept) minus 3 (3 lots of 1 quid each) equals 25 (the amount in the till)

Up on them there hills

The 27 pounds includes the 2 pounds they have paid, the plus the three they get back equals 30.

How it is put across would actually add up to 32.

9 x 3 = 27 + 2 (assistant) = 29 + 3 (given back) = 32

So forgive me I have no "maths degree" but forget there are 3 people and let's say I give you £30 and you give me £3 back which is essentially what's happened I have in fact paid out £27 ..

The original question has no meaning the sun has no relevance it's just worded to lead you into the wrong way of thinking ..the two pound he kept is bollocks if you put your 3 quid back and he put his 2 quid back it would sum up to 30 again .
