it's because we are on the northern hemisphere if you were on the south it would go the other way. They explained that in the Simpsons lol

It's because you are in the northern hemisphere fella. Go below the equator and it will swirl the opposite way.

according to the page I found on google it goes down without direction but I find that hard to believe |
