Dammit I’m mad.
Evil is a deed as I live.
God, am I reviled? I rise, my bed on a sun, I melt.
To be not one man emanating is sad. I piss.
Alas, it is so late. Who stops to help?
Man, it is hot. I’m in it. I tell.
I am not a devil. I level “Mad Dog”.
Ah, say burning is, as a deified gulp,
In my halo of a mired rum tin.
I erase many men. Oh, to be man, a sin.
Is evil in a clam? In a trap?
No. It is open. On it I was stuck.
Rats peed on hope. Elsewhere dips a web.
Be still if I fill its ebb.
Ew, a spider… eh?
We sleep. Oh no!
Deep, stark cuts saw it in one position.
Part animal, can I live? Sin is a name.
Both, one… my names are in it.
Murder? I’m a fool.
A hymn I plug, deified as a sign in ruby ash.
A Goddam level I lived at.

It reads backwards and forwards the same. Look at the letters, not the words. |

I thought it had shades of Beckett or Larkin about it. Now I realise the whole thing is a clever palindromic construction I would put it closer to the work of Cage. Much of his poetry is similarly absurdist, post-modernist, deconstructivist baloney!
This is clever on the level of being palindromic and initially kidding the reader that it is somehow philosophically or intellectually significant. However, it clearly isn't and as such it is rendered less poetry and more accurately described as doggerel!
I tend to agree with those who felt this work is evidence the poet has far too much time on his hands. Clever, perhaps? Genius, no!
And it failed to include my all-time favourite palindrome: racecar!

However, if any meaning is lost purely at the expense of the form of the poem, or at least some literary significance in the way the words are played with, the poem becomes little better than the second-rate musings of a pompous undergraduate!
Read John Cage's take on the poem 'The Lake Isle of Innisfree'. I read it as an undergrad myself. It's all about the form - the deconstruction of the original poem. The meaning is the form and the form is the meaning. I think Martin is trying to do much more with his poem, but fails. |

I think some didn't understand what the poem was about at first, including me. I knew it included palindromes but didn't realise the whole thing was a palindrome.

And no I'm pretty sure I can't !! I go back and messages are missing. Just like I got a 24hr ban as a member reported me yet I've seen worse on here and nothing gets done. So am I now, we've had a power cut for 30 mins, living in the country isn't all beer and skittles, balls! This means "early" to bed as phone's going down also, still be able to listen to the Hunan sinus for longer, yay! |

Well I don't know what the fuck happened in this thread, but I think the palindrome is pretty clever. Of course it's not going to be meaningful poetry, ffs, the limitations of making the entire fucking thing a palindrome are quite substantial. |
