Can someone please explain to me what winks are for as I'm not actually sure what someone is saying by sending one

It's there to show quick interest in someone without chocking up their email with unwanted messages! You wink, if you get one back the send a message, if you don't, then move on.

It will be worth reading profiles before winking though as some, including us, don't look at them so even this little effort will be wasted.

It's like sending a message that say 'hey' or 'hi', but maybe your not sure what else to put. Or your unsure if you fit what they need.

(At least that's how I used it)

They are meaningless to me, like two ships passing in the night in a fog bank. Like passing a stranger in the street, you may look back but carry on forward.

They should make the wink system more prevalent as a standard explanation on the use.Not on the individual persons use.

A wink, like you.

A wink plus heart, like and fancy you.

A wink plus heart plus sex icon depending on gender sexaulity the standard ones.

just three levels of that person can use towards those they seek. Standard.

Some of us use them as an easy acknowledgement of potential interest in each other. Both sides can review the profile and either could then send a message.

If you've been winked and responded to, any message that you send will likely get more attention than others sent from unknown users.

Don't wink if users specify not to, of course.
