Why do some go for lesbians that look like men?
I often ask myself this question when I see a lesbian couple and both are "butch" look like men or one looks "butch" like a man and the other one looks more feminine.
Thoughts? |

The only feminine guys I see are gay ones. |

Because of penis envy obviously...
Or maybe gender is a fluid societal construct and how someone chooses to present themselves is a personal choice? And if 'male' apparel and an outward appearance of being 'butch' is what they wish to do, there is the choice and freedom to do so? |

Isn't it just personal preference?
Some guys like bbw, some don't. Some women seek bbc, others say no black or Asian on profile..... It's just personal choice.
I'm sure lesbians can make personal choices too...just like the rest of us! |

I'd still like to know why they go for butch looking ones. |

If i was a lesbian I'd be a lipstick lesbian and I'd want a lipstick lesbian partner. Why? If I preferred women to men, why would I want a women that looks like a man. That's my opinion of course. |

Iv since read that that they are all woman, female touch etc, but some like to be the provider. Why do you have to look butch or like a man to be the provider in the relationship? |

I've been in relationships with women for nearly 20 years, and my past partners have been a mixture, I'd say some were boyish rather than butch..
It's completely personal taste, you cant help who you feel attracted to. A lot of people go for men with huge muscles, and in their opinion that looks manly, whereas personally I can't stand it and am not attracted by it in the slightest. Along side the fact that I don't wanna be stood up because it's abs and pecs day at the gym! |

Maybe they're not completely lesbian and there's just a little tiny bit of their makeup that likes men. I clearly haven't got a clue, but it's a good point actually. My daughter is a lesbian and I asked her what type of girl she fancied, she replied I'm only 15 I don't know yet mum which is fair enough. I'm kinda hoping it's the more girlie type. |

I think it's because they're comfortable.
you wear what you feel good in or perhaps it's a statement?
doesn't mean they're transgender/wanna be men I think.
often opposites attract, (not always)

There are probably as many reasons as there are individuals.
Women could be dressing that way because they identify more with the masculine aspects of their personality. It's not as simple as "this is what a man should look like" and "this is what a women should look like". Gender is more fluid and less binary than that.
Others may want to deter the attentions of men.
There's also confirmation bias in this. You are noticing the more "butch" looking lesbians more. I have lesbian colleagues who don't dress that way, and people just automatically assume they're straight. |

They aren't women who "look like men" - they are just women who look like themselves...
I'm more lesbian than bi, and only have life relationships with women - who are their own individuals.
I just can't see anything attractive at all in feminised women who dress up in make-up, lingerie and heels etc..
We all have our own likes and dislikes - simple as that!

It's because they aren't gay at all. Lesbians are cool so they are just pretending to be one. They choose a woman that looks like a man because they don't fancy women.
Much like "bi curious" women on here that lie back with their eyes closed so a woman will lick her as her husband watches.
Women that wear trousers secretly want to be men. They have cock envy. |

I'm very femme but all my girlfriends (apart from current one) have been v butch. It's just what I find attractive and no they are not men. Far from it! You may want to Google the butch/femme dynamic for more info.

I dress butch one day and femme another..I have short hair..so what am I? I dress whatever I feel comfy in..sometimes that's slacks and hoodie and sometimes that's a dress with cleavage on show and full makeup.
I used to think why would a woman who fancies women like one who looked like a man..but my body now tells me I'm attracted to that type too and I can't explain it. After all..she's a woman underneath the clothes isn't she?? |

It could be a stage, a lot of gay/lesbian not so much lesbian have said they knew from an early age. |

I know a woman who is quite attractive and married to a lesbian, not very attractive who looks like a man, my guess is she has met some awful men and she likes her new partner because she has a nice personality. I like some men who look a bit like women because i like attractive women and maybe because i grew up in the 70s when the men were more flamboyant. |

It confuses me, a member of my family is lesbian but it's now seeing a pre op transgender female to male and refers to him as he.... So that one totally confuses me, I'm like so your bi as he's now going to be a he and is having hormones to become a he, nope still a lesbian.
For myself I like girly girls, long hair, pretty. But then I like my men manly too |

You do seem to see it too often for it to be a mere coincidence, a more butch looking lesbian with a girly, classically feminine looking one. I've never understood why that is or if there's a reason for it but you can't deny it happens. |

Well I guess that sexuality is a sliding scale and not binary.
This is evidenced by the number of bisexuals there are on fab.
lots of people like the opposite of what they are, even if they are sexually attracted to the same sex. |

It's hard work on this thread isn't it!
A reasonable question following by all sorts of nonsense that tries to force words in the OPs mouth.
The term "personal preference" doesn't actually mean anything and people don't seem to understand that a question that starts with "why" is seeking an explanation, not a statement. |

It would be better if only lesbians or bisexual women answered and the heterosexual people listened.

You could have various fora:
* ask a lesbian
* ask a gay man
* ask a straight woman
* ...
You get the idea. And then people who have checked that particular box can reply.

Let me paint you a picture...
If I were, for instance, wishing to learn to drive (a reasonably complex but learnable set of actions), would I:
a) ask a forum?
b) go ask a professional or even someone I trusted who, imo, drives well?
Opinions... everyone's got one.

I guess the simple answer is, people are just attracted to whatever they are attracted to. That's how attraction works. It is what it is. Whatever your sexuality or sexual leanings, that's how it works.
There's no denying you do see this in lesbian couplings though, and often enough for you to notice. I think all the OP was originally asking was is there a particular reason for this. |

"Maybe they're not completely lesbian and there's just a little tiny bit of their makeup that likes men. I clearly haven't got a clue, but it's a good point actually. My daughter is a lesbian and I asked her what type of girl she fancied, she replied I'm only 15 I don't know yet mum which is fair enough. I'm kinda hoping it's the more girlie type.
Awww at what age did she know she was a lesbian? Of course you don't have to answer.
About 10 months ago plastered it all over Facebook daft thing, which wasn't the wisest move. You know what kids are like, they will find anything to pick on you for. My mum thinks she's going through a 'stage' "
When a good friend came out to her Nan she was a little shocked when her Nan replied.
"It's ok sweetheart you'll grow out of it, I did " |

That's not even an answer!! It's just circular logic!!
The question is "why do some go for lesbians that look like men?"
If "it's their preference" was the answer then the question is obviously intended to mean "why do some have a preference for lesbian that look like men?". 'Because they do' does not answer a 'why' question.

If we can't even agree on the difference between a statement and an explanation then there really isn't much hope of every agreeing.
As you wish, proceed to state the blindingly obvious / first thing that comes into your head. I'm sure the OP never considered it might just be a preference |

I only like men but i like to feminise them myself and turn them into 'women'. The thought of being sexual with someone without a cock doesn't appeal to me at all. Looks can vary, i like a wide variety of looks and for a relationship i'd go for personality more.
I think when women look 'butch' they actually haven't really changed their appearance tbh, maybe they dress more like men and have a mans haircut but if you look they are 100% female in their looks, they just haven't changed their look with make up or 'girly' things to appear feminine.
In fact, i'd say that most women - if they did not remove hair (especially facial) and did not wear make up and have long, styled hair, they would also look unfeminine.
By being butch you are probably more masculine overall and maybe some lesbians just like a masculine female. |

When i was a teen, (so over 20 years ago), pretty much all lesbians were butch. They just didn't want to identify as female in the sense that you would.
Many women on fab would look butch if they did not feminise themselves. |

Its dominance of the male form.. For all of "His"story men have dominated which has become an unspoken but accepted way of knowing that a male is usually the Dominant one in a relationship... The wanting to be with someone of the same gender is in the natural making of people regardless of what they look like...

My ex girlfriend had beautiful long blonde hair and a very tall womanly figure, I am short, have short hair.
We laughed once whilst out that people must figure I'm the "butch" one due to the fact I have short hair and wasn't as "womanly" in shape or attitude.
However we didn't come together due to those reasons, we fell for eachothers personalities.
Just so happened we looked and behaved differently, however we were both very much women out of the sheets and between them x |

Worth taking into account the way some lesbians choose the way they present themselves is political. I've known many a femme lady turn uber butch once they've started reading French feminism and loathe the idea of being attractive to men.
But then again, I know diesel dykes who are as lovely as can be and couldn't give a flying frig how they appear. To anyone. More power to them.
I've been both butch and femme, now dangle somewhere in the middle. Mainly because I look better with a spot of makeup on (or if working, a lot. Because that's my job) and feel more comfortable. It's nobody else's business.

"It's because they aren't gay at all.
This is true, I wear jeans most of the time.

"Why do some go for lesbians that look like men?
I often ask myself this question when I see a lesbian couple and both are "butch" look like men or one looks "butch" like a man and the other one looks more feminine.
Thoughts?
No thoughts at all. People go for people they like. Problem?
Is it a problem to ask?
Not a problem to ask. Except it does seem a trifle insensitive and generalising.
If one person likes another, then they like them. It is not a mystery.
All I see is someone who wants to better understand a minority group.
The fact that one person likes another is not an explanation of why they like that person or what exactly it is that they like.

You're now asking me to disprove a negative.
I've maintained all along that the question is flawed.

Well I think it's demonstrably nonsense to suggest straight people can't explain gay behaviour so hey ho. |

No, that's not what I said - straw manning again - but straight people speak about other people's sexualities as if they own and understand them.
Which is not the case.
As I pointed out much, much earlier, it might be more pertinant to ask the question and then for gay/bisexual women to answer and for heterosexuals to fall silent.
Simple. |

If what you've just said doesn't complain an implicit assumption that straight people can't explain gay behaviour then one of us doesn't understand the English language. |

I would point to quite a few replies on this thread as evidence to the contrary. |

How can you explain attraction? It is an emotional response. There is no logic to it. |

If there was no logic then there wouldn't be any correlations.
It's pretty easy to explain attraction. For example, the general consensus is that facial symmetry is attractive, the theory is that its subconsciously associated with good genes.
There are other trends with male height and women's hip to waist ratio for example. |

This is the problem - we might want to find a 'magic formula' for attraction and, yes there are traits that can be considered to be generally attractive but these are piss poor at determining the specific attractions of individuals.
Unless we're simply reverting to stereotypes? |

But you will agree that not all lesbians go for 'bull dykes', just as not every gay man goes for a limp-wristed lisper, nor can the preferences of every straight man or woman can be pigeon-holed in the same way.
Look at the wide range of porn on offer, or the number of threads about what various people find attractive. One size does not fit all.
The question began with a flawed supposition.
My point was that, if you wanted a reasonable answer let some gay/bi women to answer - rather than have two bi guys argue over statistical probability...
imo
