Brilliant games for GB I just hope that govt sees the immense value of sports participation and channels some funding to grassroots to make it affordable for everyone and to encourage the next generation. Sadly post 2012 numbers of people playing sport has been falling consistently. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
Listening to the panel discussing the Games and attendance with Balding. They are comparing it to London, which is has been happening throughout. The difference is that London is truly international city. Every nation is represented here so every athlete would have some support, no matter where they came from.
I do think Brazil has been under pressure to keep it all going but it has still been a good Games. The real atmosphere has been where it needs to be on the field of play.

Isn't there another 5% cut from DCMS expected unless our new Chancellor's autumn budget changes that?

And more at local levels sadly. Easy solution would be a 10% annual tax on Premier League global TV revenues ring fenced for grassroots sport but sadly can't see that happening. The health and social benefits of sport participation as youths and then adults is unquestionable. |

agree fully with the sentiments but I think the prestige of winning medals will mean that that is where (and some would argue 'and rightly so') the bulk of the funding will go..
would love to see the investment in facilities across the land as other countries not that far away have done..
been a good games.. |

No problem with the focus on the elite, but each gold medalist started at the bottom so important not to kill the goose which is laying all of these golden eggs by starving grassroots of much needed cash. |

the weird thing about the medal/funding thing is that actually every sport reached their medal target... with the exception of rowing who missed it by one..... so it is now going to be very interesting to see where money goes... unless they are now going to squeeze money from non olympic sports... and sports we not not competative in like handball, volleyball and basketball ect.....
rio have done not a bad job all things considering... was it as good as london.... probably not.... london and sydney are considered to be the "gold standard"....
will they give it to another developing country.... i don't think they will, probably far to risky....
where london really stood out is that we bought into the paralympics as we did the olympics... and the test for rio is the see if they can get anywhere near that level |

agree, when families are having to either move or travel long distances daily in order to access facilities for their promising kids it only means some exceptional potential talent gets overlooked.. |

I hope they do embrace the Paralympics but given the lack of tickets sold and the empty seats over the last 16 days it does not bode well.. |

It's been a wonderful olympics
But I have a silly random question, but we had wrestling, but i would swear there used to be Sumo wrestling in the olympics, I did not see any this time or would it now be classified as super unhealthy to be that big as I know Sumo meant extremely big guys |

To have Team GB second in the medal table beating China was just an awesome achievement. And to get 60% of the number of Golds the USA won given they have a population 6 times the size of the UK is an even more outstanding achievement.
So very well done the Team GB lads and lasses and all the backup staff and of course the Lottery and thanks for a totally absorbing fortnight. Made me feel very proud to be British. If we are allowed to say such things these days... |

I'm not sure. I think Tokyo might be having it as one of their demonstration/new (whatever it's called) sports.

If we had it again it would make sense to use London, but the stadia will be aging by then.
Manchester was our internal rival last time and I'm sure they'd like the chance if it's another UK one.

just had a look on some olympic sites... there have always been 2 types of wrestling in the olympics... freestyle and greco-roman,
sumo asked to be considered as a 2020 sport and was declined.... |

the great thing that london did that no other olympics has really done was to use already existing venues... for example.... the O2, Wembley Arena, Excel, Lords for Archery, Wimbledon for tennis.... you could use twickenham for rugby 7's... we have plenty of gold courses... you now have a 60,000 athletic stadium instead of an 80,000 one for the next 100 years,
you actually wouldn't need a lot to keep the others up to standard, and you could build a few temp venues.... |

I was involved in the late stages of the unsuccessful internal East London proposal and the early days of the successful East London proposal. Part of the learning between the two was to bring existing venues into use.
If Stratford City didn't have planning permission and Westfield on board it would have been much harder.

"I think that T20 Cricket would lend itself to the Olympics.....as long as the hosts could have a decent set of Cricket squares cultivated."
Noooo! It's bad enough that the football starts before the opening ceremony and goes on right to the bitter end.

loved it all...
id like to see more investment in getting kids from schools and activity starters , into the proper channels though. so more scouts going round to ordinary schools, to seek out talent and more information available for parents on what help they can get funding wise when they find out thier child has an aptitude for something..
so many stories at these games of 'my grandad got me into it' or 'i cant thank my teacher enough'. it shouldn't be about who you know, there should be clear route to getting assistance or places where kids can go to be assessed...too many sports are still unavailable, to those on low to moderate income. I don't think that's changed that much ..my wish going forward.. |

well there is talk of london bidding for the commonwealth games in the meantime which would be a good way of keeping things going in the meantime.... plus london has not held one since the 1930's.... |
