I just can't help myself sometimes....
Jump to: Newest in thread
There are some questions, when I am asked them, I just can't help myself and I am compelled to take the piss.
The one which gets me everytime is "how are you finding the site".... it just begs for me to answer "it's usually in my browser history" |

It's hard to imagine anyone who'd bothered to take the time to understand your ice cream vetting procedure being so unimaginative in their initial contact. |

I really don't understand how some people think that taking the piss out of someone, for whatever reason is a good thing to do, just because they feel like doing it!
I am sure that they don't enjoy it being done to them. So why do it to others.
Some people may be nervous making initial contact especially when they first join the site.
I know I was. |

Myself I find sarcasm and taking the piss out of someone pointless and immature.
I guess it stems from being taught to treat people how I would wish to be treated.
Even strangers.

Oh I have no problem laughing at myself, just don't feel the need to do it to others. Especially people I don't know.
But thats me and we are not all the same. |

Here’s the score…. When someone takes the piss (cracks a joke) people have a choice as to how they react. To simplify the range of reactions, let’s just say they can either throw a wobbly or they can join in and have a laugh.
People who join in and have a laugh show a quality of character I am rather partial to. If they can take it on the chin and laugh then good... if they can throw something funny back GREAT!
People who take everything written in pm so seriously that they take offence at a bit of piss take bore the shit out of me.

The problem is there is a fine line between cracking a joke, sarcasm and taking the piss.
There are also some people who don't understand sarcastic humour and those that do.
Now while I understand it. I dont actually like it and don't find it an endearing quality in a person.
Like I said just my opinion.

The simple answer to that is... they should have read my profile.... they'd have seen it coming and been able to do a nifty side step. |

My profile is a tad long, due to trying to cover all points that have been asked numerous times. But hopefully anyone reading it will garner the fact that I have a sense of humour. Sometimes, though, that sense of humour fails me with the stupidity of some questions.
"What are you looking for?" is one such question - to which my stock answer is 'the chocolate on aisle 9'. Now if they are unable to see the funny side of that answer or reply with their own take on it - then do I really want to spend an evening with them? Answer - no.

Mine tends to be "the remote control for the telly" (I never have trouble finding the chocolate) |

I quite like the sarcastic humour, but its sometimes difficult to get that across via a message/reply.
Can see both sides - ask a silly/uninspiring question and expect it. Happened enough to me, so hope I've learnt .... |

I haven't had a sarcastic first response to an approach on here, if I did I think I'd be immediately turned off the person sending it.
For a number of reasons. |

i am very guilty of using sarcasm/taking the piss, and at times it being misunderstood.i even had to report someone last night who sent me abusive mail after objecting to my making a joke about the fact they were getting no where in chat last night.
However it is wrong to assume that because you like to bring arogant twunts down a peg or two you will react like that to everyone. |

If someone sends me an uninspiring message I don't see the need to insult and belittle them: I simply ignore them as they're usually outside my criteria. When I was meeting my profile was quite specific and designed to attract a certain type of man.
The last sentence of my profile said "impress me". Hi, how r u? Been here long? How you finding site? Had much fun? don't impress me, so I don't answer.
My only exception is when someone writes "I've always fancied a black bird" to which I respond "I'm five miles from the Tower of London: if you can avoid the Yeoman Warders there are loads there: knock yourself out!" |

I wouldnt respond with sarcasm just for the fun of it and in order to belittle someone because I dont personally see any fun in it. Im usually too busy responding with my own cliches. Sarcasm for me only works if I know the other person well and usually if im face to face, then they are able to see from the delivery that im not being offensive. If its delivered as a put down or in such a way as to imply superiority, that is negative and I find it hard to see humour there. |

sarcasm is not always cruel nor always a put down although a put down can be sarcastic...
Some people are offended because they like to be.
They labour under the delusion that it gives them the higher moral ground to be a victim.
GOD! they are tedious.

I sometimes find it hard to bite my tongue.
The worst one is if I'm out in the car with my mum and another car zips past at 200mph, the inevitable words come from the old dear "he won't get there any faster"
...bite tongue, bite tongue....nnnnnnggggg |

Taking the piss out of the question:
"What are you looking for"..... "new shoes on ebay"
Taking the piss out of the person:
"What are you looking for"..... "Someone with an IQ greater than my bra size... my search continues"
Two different things. |

I don't see this as offensive sarcasm myself, merely a challenge to respond with wit and humour. If some took offence at something like that then they need to toughen up I reckon.
Your swing will vary... |

That sort of cheek is what makes me want to speak to someone and see where it goes.
If I respond to someone with a bit of cheek, whether it be sarcasm or something else, their response to that tells me pretty much all I need to know.
Banter! You either get it or you don't! |

I dont respond to messages with sarcasim simply because i rarely respond to messages the only time I have responded back sarcastically was the considerate smoker message. And to be honest I was also telling the truth by replying that way that am not a considerate smoker. In other words, you have contacted me, I smoke, am not a considerate smoker. If you dont like it, then build a bloody bridge and get over it because you contacted me.
but yes I am sarcastic and banter in chat room to many and in forums to people that I know.
I tend to look for people with a sense of humour. At the end of the day I would rather be with a person who could laugh at themselves then take themselves too seriously. You just cant smell the roses when your head is too much up your own arse now can you |

I dont think there's anything offensive about the examples given in the forum. It is all down to the delivery and the inference. If I received a message saying 'if I called you gorgeous would you hold it against me', I wouldnt reply 'if I called you stupid would you hold it against me. I may not be swayed by cheesy lines but I wouldnt be rude and if they told me to f' off I wouldnt pass off rudeness by saying the other person didnt have a sense of humour. But a well delivered quip with a few friendly words afterwards is completely acceptable. I have to admit though that if I messagf a guy and said, so how long have you been on the site and he replied, 10 minutes and then no other message I'd think, oh god another Jack Dee wannabe |

Anyone with reasonable social skills and an active engaged sense of humour can come back from a one line piss take…. as someone else said it is a challenge to type something witty and humorous back.
I’d rather stare at dishwater than engage with those who not only fail to pick up the gauntlet but complain about it being a trip hazard on the floor.
So I guess if a piss take puts some people off... it's done its job well.

Its spooky you just said that, I've just came back from making a coffee and I spent 10 minutes just staring into the dishwater.
Granted I was imagining feeding sea horses, water proof sugar lumps while I did it. |
